I've never noticed the connection here. Great thread.

EDIT: On a side note,

Look guys, it's not an allegory on the Crusades. Whoever said that it was is in error because Bungie themselves have said that it is a *Biblical* allegory and the Crusades is *historical* not Biblical. Besides, to say the Crusades were about Catholics killing innocent Muslims is a complete misunderstanding of history. The crusades were in retaliation to the growing attacks from Islam. Islam was trying to take over Europe and they were kidnapping Catholic children, bringing them up to be Muslim and then sending them into battle in order to kill Catholics out of hatred. The Catholics were defending themselves from Muslim invasion. Jerusalem etc did not *belong* to the Muslims, we were taking them back. I could go on about historical evidence but I shouldn't have to. Also the Covenant are clearly based much more on Jews and Muslims than Christians considering their leader is the "Prophet of Truth" and also the only known religous among the humans in the games is Christian (Dutch from ODST).

I <3 you too Bungie

Well thought out. That was really interesting. I would add that I feel like Cortana acts more like a hybrid conscience/soul/Holy Spirit/God the Father figure. She chooses her carriers, she is Chief's access to everything forerunner, and she is his guide and helper (all pointing to the God figure). But she is also corruptible by the gravemind, fragile, and not a physical force or being.

Hominus Benitae

Good job on this but I entirely disagree though.

amazing how this has turned into a Christian hate forum even though if you should realize halo is not related to Christianity i like it how atheists think they understand religion when they dont know anything about it i am an atheist as well but if you read the bible which i have its quite an interesting read and u would notice that halo and Christianity have nothing to do with this this is the kind of forum posts that put atheism to shame.

I'd like to know what you thought about the legendary ending in Halo 3, where an unknown planet is shown threw an eclipse, I do not believe it is reach because Reach was destroyed and was in the past. I THINK it's Onyx. What do you have to say? Using biblical references, to decipher?

  • 10.17.2010 12:38 PM PDT

Yes, i noticed this too. but you put it in words better anyway!

I think he's more going for the " Symbols are the same kind of feeling/meaning" instead of blatantly saying Christianity and Halo are the same? It is kind of odd how closely some of the (quotes/lines) and (ships/installations/buildings) are references clearly from the bible. I think the Ark and the covenant stand out the most in my head. I don't feel the need to express whether I'm an atheist, christian, or what have you. The Bungie forums are for us fans to have a place to talk and communicate, I appreciate this, and think that spamming, and or religious battles(Hating or Defending, or anything like that) are not what this topic should be about. It's not whether Christianity is bad or good. It's about the links between the names and lines from Halo and the bible. I'm just as curious as the OP.

Ginfaxi ok Magni

Just saying Halo has multiple references to multiple religions and Gods, for instance Mjolnir and Gungnir armour types for Spartans, and the number 7 is a special number in nearly every civilization that ever happened, not just Christianity

  • 10.19.2010 8:27 AM PDT

I think it would be a good idea if christians pulled there enourmous heads out of there even larger -blam!-s and saw that not everything revolves around them :)

  • 10.19.2010 12:06 PM PDT

I do not think that the Covenent can even be close to be considerd Christians because nowhere in the bible does it say hey go out and commit mass genocide also the crusaders were corrupt they did not follow the true teachings. As far as the humans being muslims goes that doesnt make any sense either because if S117 is jesues the reclaimer and the quran hadith and so forth teach that jesus was there but they do not focus on him they focus on the "Prophet" Mohamud (or however you spell it)as their "god"

True but there are too many Christian messages and references for the Christian themes to just be another add on.

As a christian and avid Halo fan, I can truly appreciate the thought provoking content of your article. You obviously did a fair amount of research on it. I enjoyed the read. In my opinion the Bible may have been used as inspiration and the writers then continued on the path because it made for an interesting story. I personally don't think there's any deeper meaning to the halo story other than the surface similarities.

Exterminating hostile alien conglomerates since the dawn of the 21st century.

We got some fancy minds on the forums here! Good to know people capable of thinking of such a complex hypothesis play halo, opposed to all the hating kiddies.

I'm afraid I know to little of any religion to make any kind of worthy comment on this, just wanted to express my awe... :P

I'm going to invade your heart like a barn swallow high on milk chocolate and grandma love.

Fairness is only possible within the limited powers of man. Elsewhere, there is only chance.

Thus I refute thee.

Yea I've thought of these things too. Interestingly put, OP.

In terms of when the Religions showed up and also the way that the factions act within Halo... I always paralleled

God = Precursors
Jews; Jesus, Noah, etc. = Forerunners
Christians = The Covenant
Muslims = Humanity

The Covenant-Human war parallels the Crusades, with the Covenant (Christians) trying to re-take Forerunner relics from the humans.

I would say that the covenant are a more muslim group.Through the use of halos they plan on firing them and becoming gods, though if you knew the the truth you would say the covenant are on suicidal path to kill themselves in order to become a higher form of beings.which is similar to the muslim religion
Sorry, I had to come here and post, told myself I wasn't but this post above me just completely hit the nail on the head.

In Islam it is COMPLETELY forbidden to commit suicide in ANY WAY, even if it is in war. Suicide is a form of weakness and trying to escape your problems by wasting your life rather than trying to solve these problems.

Suicide Bombing has been a technique for a while, it DID NOT originate in Islam and those who do actually Suicide Bomb in the name of Islam are blind zealots who were fooled by a group of insane men who told them lies and misinterpretations.

You understand now? Please, before posting take some time to research WHAT your going to post, it is highly offensive to me to hear people say "Hey look, he is a Muslim. I hope he doesn't blow up on us."

Oh and btw, being "Higher Form of Beings" and Islam are totally different concepts. I believe it is the Mormons who believe they will become higher beings after death, not the Muslims.

Actually, if you think about it, ALL religions believe they will become higher beings upon death if they serve their God willingly. How? Well, let's see, living in God's Kingdom of Heaven with Eternal Life and no a care in the universe...seems about right.

7 = It took God 7 days to create the Earth.
You know technically that isn't possibly correct.

I mean, yes of course God CAN and COULD create anything in a blink of an eye or even less, however if you think about it how long is 7 days in God's eyes?

To us humans we know 7 days have passed when 7 daytimes and 6 nightimes (forgive me, I am HORRID at math) have past. That's a week we can tell because of our star Sol.

Now it is completely possible that this line in the Bible was misinterpreted to be 7 days, or that God (if God wrote the Bible through man's inspiration) so that the minds of the infant mankind (we still are infants) wouldn't be completely shattered by the idea that the universe is Billions of Years Old.

From what I can understand, there is no "Time" in Space, only on Planets with their stars. Of course you will feel like there is time, but if there is time then how do you know how it works without a star?

In space, how many hours are in a day? A week? A month? A year?

No one really knows, so therefore 1 Whole DAY could be 1 Billion Years.

Think about that for a moment, tickles the brain doesn't it?

Ok, first off ahead of time, sorry if I end up "triple posting".

Now, on this guy's post.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was in fact merely a mortal man, just as in Islam the Prophet Jesus (Isa in Arabic, Peace Be Upon Him) was a man.

Both these men were, in Islam, messengers and Prophets of Allah (God) and were to both be respected equally, just as all the Prophets are to be respected equally. All of the Prophets never said they were God, on the same level as God, and etc.

In Islam, we DO NOT believe our Prophets to be Gods or God, they were merely honored individuals who were given the word of God to spread throughout the world.

All of the Bible's Prophets and I'm pretty sure most of the Torah's Prophets are one in the same, just different names.

I will tell you what I told the other person, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING A COMMENT THAT COULD IGNITE A CONFLICT!

None of us want a conflict, Islam is a peaceful religion and Christianity and Judaism once lived peacefully in same communities. I can only pray we come back to that state of complete peace.

See you on the battlefield.

I actually saw the Forerunner-Flood war as an allegory to the story of Atlantis. In both cases, there exists a super-advanced ancient civilization. They were both destroyed by a flood. Atlantis was destroyed by a tsunami, while the Forerunners were driven to self genocide by the Flood.

There are references and allegories to a lot of different mythologies in Halo.

There have been a lot of interesting posts recently but I do not think I have read many that have been very accurate at all. Halo isn't pro-Muslim. I'm not even going to claim that I *know* it's pro-Christian, because I don't know. I just think it is. But I am 100% convinced that it is not an allegory defending Islam. I quote Bungie again when they said "At it's heart Halo is a Biblical allegory". They said Biblical. They would have said it was based on the Qur'an if they were writing a story promoting Islam. By this I do not even mean that it is necessarily fundamentally Anti-Islam. Just not pro.
