This has probably been posted here already (hell, probably by me ; been here too long to remember exactly what I've posted) but this should interest you.

I personally, see it this way.

Sure the Bungie staff have said it was a Christian allegory, but did you ever stop to think, "Maybe they just said that so as to not piss a large amount of people off?" Maybe it isn't exactly the way we're interpreting it, the way they intended it to be interpreted.

I personally think its theme is the oppression of Government and Religion.

In the game we have the protagonists, the SPARTANS, who were created by a Government, the Government of humanity, to be exact, to crush opposition to this force. In the end, their mission to purge the Insurrection fails, and a new enemy arrives, the Covenant.

The Covenant represent the Religious oppression during the Crusades. The Crusades were a military attempt to eliminate all other religions and place themselves on top. What is the Covenant doing? Militarily wiping out the human colonies one by one. If you notice, the Covenant is controlled by a Council and Prophet Triumvirate. The Prophets resemble "Space Popes" as I remember one of the staff members stating. What does the Pope and the Holy See do? Well, the Holy See is a government, the most powerful in the world, they are led by the Pope.

Vatican City has agents in every country in the entire world.

The way I see it, Master Chief brings about an 'awakening', as the first person to bring about the revelation to Humanity of the truth about their oppressors, and the Flood they are about to unleash. For example, when Cotana tells him that he is being mislead by the robot (being a machine, this could be a reference to how the media dumbs us down through machines), and that the rings could wipe out all life in the Galaxy.

The Covenant, as a result of their ignorance, unleash the Flood, and nearly wipe out humanity and everything else with it through the Halo rings. Just as how the power elite of our species is planning to, allegedly, wipe us out down to 500 million in many conspiracy theories.

I think they're true, personally, and Bungie is trying to tell us something...

O_O all the written are true, i agreed. I don't even think about that are connect to bible. (I admit I not often read bible.)

most stories with a hero can be thought of as a Christian allegory if you analyze the right way

  • 05.14.2011 2:12 PM PDT

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I don't think any of it was on accident. Their are too many similarities for any of it to be a coincidence. Even when I finished Halo 3 back in 2007, I strongly thought that Chief's casket was symbolic of Jesus. Sacrificing himself to save us all? Come on.

"The end begins, with chaos!"

Pretty well written. Although I'm surprized Bungie hasn't removed it since the forum rules say no talk or posts of religious matters or themes.

Isn't...Halo the little ring that floats above an angels head? Aren't Halos religious? Lol.

Good write up, I just figured it was a religious allegory due to the ark, halos, rapture, and all that good stuff.

If you can read this, that means I'm not a Shaolin monk...

yet.

Well we are religious guys, I think a lot of the religious stuff in Halo comes from Jason Jones, and the imagery is all him and he likes to fit it into the Halo story.

I love that guy. He said their newest game was going to be PS3 exclusive, hah. It was a joke, though.

However, I doubt Elites would be too cool with tails.

  • 06.02.2011 2:37 PM PDT

Why do you think it comes from Jason Jones? Is Jason religious?

  • 06.07.2011 12:03 PM PDT

And the storyline before the trilogy seems to line up with the Greek v Persian war I've noticed.(ever so slightly, because I never put enough thought to come up with the massive novel that guy did) With the spartans, obviously, representing the spartans, and reach representing thermopylae, and yes, I googled it and pasted that, so don't say I spelled it wrong! And if you read some of the books, you would notice that there are many conflicts and alliances among human colonies, such as city-states in ancient Greece, and then theres the chief screwing up the whole thing and I have nothing on what he might be, but whatever because I came up with this all in one massive brain storm. Anyone wanna add to this you can!

Also I think I remeber reading in one of the books that there was an estimated number of 300 spartans on Reach.

  • 06.07.2011 12:48 PM PDT

Actually Halo wasn't inspired by the bible, it was the bible that was inspired by Halo.

  • 06.07.2011 12:55 PM PDT

That's amazing! I completely agree with you, and am impressed with the intelligence you used to disect an allegory out of this complex game (no one can really seem to understand the games completely).

But which passage in the bible has. "Tetelestai, which means "It is finished" in Greek are Christ's final words before dying on the cross." You didn't reference it.

Found it, john 19:30. The writers of halo obviously alluded to that phrase on purpose. That was no accident.

Since my thread is related to this hopefully people take a look at it also.

Halo is what you make it.

  • 06.12.2011 3:22 PM PDT

The fact that Bungie also mentions use of their "Halo Bible" could in itself support your claims. Well done btw.

Yet again we have people spouting anti-catholic BS. Most uneducated people who listen to the mainstream media have this idea that it was the Catholics that are evil and doing bad things in the Holy Land.

If you would please educate yourself you would know that it was Jewish land that allowed Muslims and Christians to see the Holy Land. Then the Muslims invavded The Byzantine Empire in the 1000's and slaughtered thousands of Christians and Jews and denied access to the Holy Land to EVERYONE but Muslims. The Crusade was in response to Muslim aggression and slaughters. Never once did the Christians kick Muslims from their lands yet the Muslims did every single time they invaded whether in Spain or the Holy Land. Stop bashing the Catholic Church until you are educated.

No. They were being completely literal when they said "Halo Bible."

Very nicely written, I have thought of this before but never like that! Bravo, the ending seen of Halo 3 means alot more to me now! And I have to applaude the Bungie community on this, normally you put something religious on the internet and it starts flame wars, I have seen zero racism, threats or insults on this page, way to be mature everyone, Thank You! so nice to have good discussions about religion and not have some idiot saying your stupid.
