There have been a lot of interesting posts recently but I do not think I have read many that have been very accurate at all. Halo isn't pro-Muslim. I'm not even going to claim that I *know* it's pro-Christian, because I don't know. I just think it is. But I am 100% convinced that it is not an allegory defending Islam. I quote Bungie again when they said "At it's heart Halo is a Biblical allegory". They said Biblical. They would have said it was based on the Qur'an if they were writing a story promoting Islam. By this I do not even mean that it is necessarily fundamentally Anti-Islam. Just not pro.
Halo is actually a compilation of many different religions and sects put into the game throughout Human history.

Yes, the Bible plays a main part in the main story. Of course some people from the Bible like the Baptist John are also in the Qur'an. In the Qur'an, the Arabic version of John is Yahya, just as Jesus (which technically means "Son of Zeus" doesn't it?) is Isa in Arabic.

I would say if ANYTHING the Covenant represents the Catholic Church. Think about it, the Pope during the Crusades lied to the Crusaders saying their sins for the atrocious acts they will commit in the crusades will be absolved and completely forgiven.

Of course, that was all a bunch of BULL-blam-...

Halo's story takes inspiration from all walks of life and religion, not just Christianity.

Remember, the Christians, Jews and Muslims are all "People of the Book".

Bungie.

They intentionally made the Ark as a biblical reference because the forerunners brought every species in the galaxy into the Ark so they could use the halo's to eradicate and survive the flood.

  • 10.23.2010 10:34 AM PDT

that's why i like playing halo.
just how so much of it relates to
the insperation of the bible.

  • 10.23.2010 1:08 PM PDT

that is extremely impressive i saved this for later. i have thought of it as a biblical perspective before but u went all out that was just purely amazing especially with the greek part but even better was the john 1:17 verse i never thought of that so *clap,clap,clap* fantastic job

The two examples you gave surprise me, however they also strike me as likely inaccurate. Could you please provide reference to your primary sources for this information (especially regarding the Pope and the Crusades)?

The Earth King wants his wall back, the Fire Nation is getting into Ba Sing Se :P haha, couldn't resist. In all seriousness though, great read.

While I don't agree with all your connections, I definitely think that Halo has take a lot of influence from Christianity. Halopedia had at one point a whole article discussing all the various similarities between the two, but it's sadly not there anymore.

I definitely plan to keep visiting this thread as long as it's around.

However, I failed to notice until just now that the monitor, Guilty Spark, often refers to the Chief as a Forerunner, or more specifically, the Reclaimer. Which would seem to indicate a specific tie to the Forerunners, even a "son-like" tie that Christ has to God. And the Chief would therefore be reclaiming the ability to be saved, by activating Halo

This sounds similar to Constantine.

Kill first! Run later.

Just one thought, where do the engineers come into this, because in ODST, it shows that they are slaves, and not really part of the covenant.

I know this point was made long ago, and you might not even still be active on these threads, but that was certainly a decent read.

Sadly, one of the devs admitted this to basically be a complete truth, even though it seems pretty obvious from the get-go (the title is 'Halo,' herp derp). Anyhow, in the end, both the Bible and the Halo series in its entirety have proven to be quite interesting pieces of fiction.

The Bible isn't exactly fiction. No more than the battle of Waterloo. It happened. Just saying...

I'll stop the discussion right here, not that we were exactly in a full-fledged 'debate' or anything. I just don't won't people getting po'd over the obvious religion discussion.

It's far too easy to troll.

Yeah good find with the John 1:17 verse.

I actually think the human covenant war is in reverse. The covenant are muslims. (just wait to see where im going with this). Now the prophets and the brutes are the taliban. They are the muslim extremists that have a perverted belief system that has deviated from the true belief system that all normal muslims (the elites) believe. The normal muslims are good, ordinary people while the taliban are evil extremists. The humans do not specifically belong to one religion but are everyone else.

The belief in the Halos giving salvation is a misrepresentation of their purpose that the covenant are hell-bent on. As the taliban are hell-bent on their beliefs.

Although you can say that the covenant were the Jews that had to be corrected in their faith by Jesus, the Master Chief.

I have tried to be as non racially conflicting as possible here.

Interesting Ferniwushere. I do not agree but I compliment you on the thought you put into that. Cheers.

In terms of when the Religions showed up and also the way that the factions act within Halo... I always paralleled

God = Precursors
Jews; Jesus, Noah, etc. = Forerunners
Christians = The Covenant
Muslims = Humanity

The Covenant-Human war parallels the Crusades, with the Covenant (Christians) trying to re-take Forerunner relics from the humans.

No.

What did religion ever do to you?

To say you hate religion is to say you hate literally billions of people because they have a belief system in a monotheistic or polytheistic God or deity, which they claim usually tells their people to be good, peace loving and cooperable with others.

Now if you're going to say you hate religion because of the crusades, holocaust or even 9/11 first you have to realise that all of these events were influenced by a warped and twisted version of pure religion. For example Jesus Christ preached "don't kill people" then the Catholic church initiates the slaughter of millions of Arabs and Muslims. Now who do you think was being rediculous out of those two?

Not only that but never use war as an insentive to attack the religious. Stalin, Hitler, Ghengis Khan and other dictators were all Atheist and they killed several million each, more than all religious wars combined.

I never understand why Atheism and Religion are always at odds with each other. "Oh no the Christian tried to convert me! Hate crime!"

Did you ever think that they were trying to look out for your best interests? By to trying save you from what they think is eternal death? I'd be pretty flattered if someone tried to do that for me.

Both sides need to relax. Way i see it science tries to answer the "how" of the universe while religion tries to answer the "why" mainly with some of the "how".

Don't think people are educated on the matter because they skimmed through a few pages of "The God Delusion".
