There's a "Kendo Camp" in Toronto coming up.... anyone else going? It looks hard, very hard.... but fun! I'm just curious.

If you don't know what Kendo is, don't bother replying to this thread.

ken·do [ kén d ]

noun

Japanese martial art: a Japanese martial art in which people fence using bamboo sticks instead of swords

[Early 20th century. From Japanese, literally “way of the sword.”]

So now you know.

Kendo?? Nah, give me old fashion 1 point sparring, no equipment, any day. You take kendo or karate Shai?

My friend Nancy when she used to live in Japan started taking Kendo classes, then she had to stop because her and her family moved to America. She said it was really hard but really fun.

I never liked swords. If I were ever to use a melee weapon it would be a trident.

Machete, Axe, Big ass Hammer, or double dirks for me.

When is this school starting up i have always wanted to do kendo but there never was anything in my area and for my personal weapon preference i prefer double ninja swords(smaller katanas) or two egyptian daggers they curl aorund your fist. Almost like a bladed bras knuckles except it travels about 10 cm below your fist into a point so you can also stab and slask with.

Yes, I do take Kendo. I also do Eie (pronounced, E. I.). And Kendo is NOT fencing witha bamboo stick, despite what it looks like. Its much more complex... more ritualistic. There's basic Shiay (She. I.), in which you use a shinai, which is the bamboo sword. Then there's katas in which you use wooden swords (bokans) with a partner... there's also something thats a mix between shiay (possibly wrong spelling), and kata.

Eie is basically solo-katas (katas are like dances... but less dancy-ish), but with a real sword (sharp tip, metal, blunt blade that cannot be sharpened (or you'll ruin the blade).... so its not real real), called a Katana.

I love swords... they're so majestic and beautiful to watch in-motion.

The camp is the last weekend of this month, by the way. If you have never done Kendo, I suggest you don't go (no offense), because it will be very, VERY hard.... I'll probably end up dead at the end of it, myself, and I've been doing it for a year.

Which brings me back to the question of this thread. Are any of you going?!

The weapon of Poseidon... the weapon of a god. Interesting choice, Barron.

Has your friend looked for any Kendo Clubs where she lives? Thats sad that she was taken away from Kendo (seriously). Kendo is hard, but, like she said as well, very fun... the only bad thing about it is how incredibly hot you get when you wear bogu (armor)... the helmet, despite the rather open grate on the front of it, lets no air in... well, not literally, but it feels that way.
