I think it's only logical for a Spartan to use the jackal's energy shield. Afterall, Spartans are master of any weapon and pilot of any vehicle.
It would make the most sense in my mind if the shield was used just as any other duel-wieldable weapon. You pick it up on one side or the other and pull the trigger to activate it. when it's not being used the shield would remain contracted and at the player's side. When being used (when the trigger is pulled) the shield would be deployed and brought to bear in front of the player, protecting most of his/her front upper body, and if he/she crouched it would cover almost all of the front of the body. When using the shield, you could also use any other duel-wieldable weapon, although you would have to look through the bright color of the energy shield probably decreasing accuracy.
As far as how the shield would work energy wise, I figure it would have a meter just like the energy shields that protect a spartan's or elite's body. When the shield is shot it would become weaker until it eventually busted. It would need time to recharge and be able to deploy again. It seems simple and plausible enough to me.
The shield would allow for more succesful charges in order to close distances with an opponent, and it would allow for more co-op oppurtunities where one player could crouch with the shield out shooting with a small weapon while another popped up from behind him and the protection provided to fire a more powerful two-handed weapon.
Also, as a side note, I think it would be cool to be able to duel-wield a sword with shield for gladiator style combat. I just figure to balance this the lunge ability would be taken away while the shield is active, but the player could still make simple slash attacks. Also there would be a second or so pause after the shield is put down until the player could lunge.
So what do you think?
