Well he's sleeping through the mission briefing, and what do you say to a guy who wakes you up by hitting you in the head when your the noobie on the squad about to go on a risky mission? And what do you say to a guy who says "nows the time to be the strong silent type"? He's by himself in the city at night, so he doesn't have anyone to talk to.

Actions speak louder than words anyway.

I think its because Bungie wants you to imagine that it's really you when you play as the rookie. I mean, a game is always more fun when it feels like your the main character. That's also why the Chief never takes off his helmet or you never see or hear the main character in the call of duty games.
What he said.

He's Gordan Freeman.

If he was Gordon Freeman he wouldn't need a squad. they could just drop him in with the Energy Ball Gun and he would kill all of the Covenant in .22 seconds

Chunky_Lover's Average Joe Interview

Bungie All Star Contest Winner Weeks 6,8 and 12

It's a matter of personal narrative.

Bungie did a smart thing with the Master Chief, with giving him limited dialogue and making that so what he says in the game's dialogue reflects what a normal person would say in the situation.

Same thing goes for the Rookie, though there is no confirmed dialogue or speech in his case, its still the same idea.

Bungie wants us to play through the game as if we were in their shoes.

Probably the same useless stupid lazy bull-blam!- that Bungie has done in their prev ious games(as as valve): So YOU can be the protoganist.

It's completely -blam!- stupid, because I know I'm not the protagonist, and having them not speak is far more immersion breaking that having them speak. I'm perfectly capable of being immersed in stories written from a limited first person perspective, there's no good reason for the silent protagonist thing. So I'll go by my personal canon, and say that he's mute.

In reality, It's nothing more than lazy storytelling. They don't need to write an actual character! Why take the effort when an empty shell like Gordon Freeman will do? It also saves times and money, because they don't need to hire a voice actor, record the dialog, and put it in game. So I guess it is more than lazy storytelling. It's lazy storytelling that saves money.

I actually agree with this. In game where the main character says nothing it just feels awkward when the characters carry on a one sided conversation with you. It doesn't immerse me, it just reminds me more that I'm playing again. It's especially bad in Half-Life though. Gordan doesn't so much a grunt when mortally wounded or even killed. It feels like I'm playing a soulless robot.

It's what I've been worried about ODST. I didn't mind in much Halo. OSme times the Masterchief talks. He's just a quite guys, just says what needs to be said. But it loks like the Rookie will be another soulless robot. It wont prevent me from enjoying the game but I would have enjoyed it more if the Rookie seemed human.
