Windows LIVE uses a more flexible system for joining and hosting games over the net. For Halo Custom Edition, any firewall or router requires configuration in order for people to join your hosted game.
Long story short, the host needs to allow port 2302, UDP protocol, through the firewall. On top of that, if there's a router, it has to be configured to "forward" that same port from the internet connection to the computer that will be hosting.
Damn. Looking back at that, maybe Windows LIVE isn't so bad.
