Just to shut down the debate and turn this thread back on topic (please try to keep it to discussing this patch, so I can find bug reports easily)

- CE does have graphics-engine differences from PC. That was one of the reasons it got split off from PC and not shipped to everyone. On some cards that were high-end at the time, the changes made an improvement, as detailed on GBX's forums at the time it was released. On other cards, it caused a few problems, which is why it couldn't be made a mandatory main-line patch. If someone claims that these problems are still around in CE only, they're probably right.

- ATI renders active camo as a glass/refraction effect like Xbox. Nvidia uses a completely different shader to render it as alpha-blanded (simple transparency) because Nvidia cards that were current when the game came out couldn't do the glass effect correctly.

I just bit the bullet and installed the patch into crossover games and so far it works great. One problem I am having is that sometimes it will throw up this error when I launch it and if I reboot crossover games it goes away.
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1758/picture2bmr.png
also, that error reads as 1GB of ram when I really have 4.

Also, I don't know if you fixed it yet or not but it is still reading as 1.07 in the multiplayer server browser, but in the settings the build number is 1.09.

Something smells fishy...

Does the patch v1.09 effect the server list? Such as do the servers that show up also have to be patched to 1.09?

It might be a silly question but I'm just wondering. Thanks :)

Would it be possible to have a MOTD and sv_say for Halo PC?

Sawnose: This version will network with 1.08 in the same game, it doesn't break compat.

Oh thanks. I get it now.

I thought that was just for testing the 1.09 beta patch. And not for when it's official and part of the auto-update.

Well for right now it is in beta so that is what I thought his question was pertaining to. I don't know if in the full release anything will change. I hope not because then the mac version would go out of sync with the PC version.

Sawnose:

Dude you just don't seem to get it. I'm not trying to insult you, but where were you years ago when any of this mattered? Security patches? C'mon lol.

As for the aimbotters, you guys ignored the problem for many many years and only recently even acknowledged that the game had cheating. I mean seriously, how many posts did people make around here FOR YEARS and you were silent along with the rest of Bungiesoft.

Too little too late my friend. We appreciate the minor updates and such if you want to fiddle around, but too little too late.

Oh and the MOTD is perhaps the most hilarious thing of all. Yes, please Bungiesoft tell us to go play Halo Custom Edition. Also where is this "Maw" that I am supposed to click on....?

For reasons I've discussed in the past, I will not be entering the "arms race" of trying to stay ahead of aimbotters, which would involve rewriting large portions of the game and constant updates to keep up with new exploits. (It was considered too complex a problem for the team of ~10 full-time devs to fit into the 1-year dev cycle; I'm 1 person - and not one of the original devs - currently spending 2 evenings a year on the game.)

...

The game should have never went gold then. If you knew about the potential cheating and decided the problem "too complex" but shipped it anyway and charged people 50 bucks a copy, that is weaksauce.

One might also consider this a "defective product" being sold, which a crafty lawyer might call "fraud."

Is this a thread about a beta patch or a war on that state of a game?

Like sawnose said before we should stay ontopic about reporting bugs or anomalies with this beta of the 1.09 patch and leave other comments outside the thread.

Here is an on topic comment: I can't wait for Sawnose to implement this patch officially so he can break the only tool we have to combat aimbotters, Sightjacker.

Bungiesoft deserves all of the criticism and then some for doing such a bang up job on Halo PC. [rolls eyes]. The really sad thing is that they even failed harder with H2v, a game where they didn't even bother to get the mouse controls correct. I am an older gamer and I remember when studios had integrity and accountability.

I don't think you appreciate the complexity here. Halo PC was a hard thing to do, and the engine works in strange ways. If you are that passionate about the sightjacker, then maybe you should learn how it works and make a fix for it. So far we have verified that aimbot is not affected by the update so who is to say that sightjacker will not. You cannot hold sawnose or anyone else at bungie responsible for the actions of people that like to cheat online. They did not see halo boom during release, so why should they be blamed for something like that now, years on. All games get broken, is it just a fact of how some people are. This thread is not the place to take up that argument.

I imagine that people who bought the game recently feel that way. If you bought the game in 2003/2004 you see a different story, one where cheating on Xbox is a huge deal, but PC gamers are ignored. Threads on cheating go back many years around here, and Bungie didn't even admit that it was happening until some random Italian dude showed up here and forced Bungiesoft to make patch 1.08 last year. Think about that. And now the same thing has happened with Halo2Vista. All of us who bought the game early on are out 50 bucks and left with another game that Bungiesoft has left to rot and won't even comment on. I mean, they took down their Halo PC servers and told us that some awesome surprise was coming. That surprise was removal of Bungie Halo PC servers to be replaced with H2v servers, a game that they abandoned faster than they abandoned Halo PC!

Here is the earliest thread I can find on the bot. Notice the OP was banned. I guess Bungie didn't want to hear it.

And another interesting read:

Notice how members tried in vain to prevent this from happening again with H2v. Check out the response from Bungie, "not our problem."

You Frnks- It took the better part of ~3 years to get an aimbot working for Halo. And it was an accident. I consider that good programming.

It didn't take three years, it wasn't an accident and it certainly wasn't good programming that stopped it coming sooner.

When I said MOTD, I meant the server MOTD. The one you hold F2 to see.

Jesus Christ, Frnksnbns. Chill out. You're blabbering about trivial stuff and making yourself look like an idiot.

Halo has been patched against all known security flaws, and it's been patched in a timely fashion. While Bungie did ignore many reported problems at first (Haloboom), once they became public (thank you full disclosure), they were immediately patched. This has been going on since Halo's release, hence the reason we are now at version 1.09.

There is absolutely nothing that Bungie can do about aimbotting. Even if the game in its current state was to be fully patched against it, it is impossible to prevent someone from finding a way to make a working aimbot. If someone is desperate, they will find a way.

Also, never once did he say Bungie knew about the aimbotting problem before release. Christ, it wasn't a problem until three years after release. They had no idea how it could be done anymore than anyone else at that time. Anyone can speculate there might be a problem, but it doesn't mean they know how. Heck, I'll speculate that there's a security glitch with this website. Does that mean I know what it is or how it's performed?

If anything, you could say that Halo on the PC is one of the most rock solid games ever. Other than the aimbot, it is LITERALLY impossible to cheat, since everything depends on the server. In Halo, the server is the boss. When you perform an action on your client, it needs to go back to the server. That server is basically playing the game with your input, but with the game's defaults. So, if you were to put on a superjump cheat on the client, the server wouldn't know that, and you would end up appearing like you are jumping on the client, but that wouldn't be happening on the server or other clients because they are getting info from the server.

If you want features in Halo Custom Edition, then play Halo Custom Edition. That developed alone on Gearbox's behalf, and the download is offered with absolutely zero warranty or support.

Halo 2 Vista, though, is a different story. That game would need to be redone from the ground up. It's broken in so many areas that you need a 9 page Microsoft Word document to explain them all (and the list isn't even complete). The GFWL integration causes further problems, since it wasn't built right from the start and CD-key authentication (such as with the GameSpy API) with the server is non-existent. If someone was willing to patch this game (or if you're making Halo 3), please ask for our input before doing. It seems like we know more about the proper way to handle these things than those in charge of the project.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

1. Who even plays Mac Halo?
2. Halo PC is very popular and the trial is popular as well for mods.
3. H2V was bugged and the crashing one is the worst h2v bug (along with live servers not avalible.)

1. a lot of people still do.
2. Mods are more popular on the retail version of halo 1. Halo PC and Halo Mac connect to the same set of servers so no matter what platform you are on you can play with people of the other platform.

Okay, to both of you. I was wondering if I should download the patch for Mac Halo. I'm not retarded.
