Next to map and ping there is a ring, looks like the halo ring, what does that mean (in the halo internet lobby) me and my frineds have wondered for ages.

  • 09.30.2009 6:54 PM PDT

I have too.

Daodan Latency at 65%

That means the server is running complete stock halo maps. As if you were doing a fresh install of all the maps. It runs stock original halo, unmodded.

  • 10.01.2009 7:01 AM PDT

lol wrong
it means the server is running all classic gametype varients.
all default.
doesn't matter if it's modded or not.
and guys it's in the manual the game came with...
why don't you read for once.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

If anything, you could say that Halo on the PC is one of the most rock solid games ever. Other than the aimbot, it is LITERALLY impossible to cheat, since everything depends on the server.

If you are who I think you are, I'm saddened by your attitude. Plus you are flat out wrong on a few things. I never said Bungie knew about the aimbot BEFORE release. That would be a stupid thing to say and I am not stupid. Been playing as long as you or longer, I remember the bot coming out near the beginning of '06. I think that that is on the record as accurate.

Now, saying there is no cheating other than the aimbot is false. Bluewalling/wireframing is possible and there are NUMEROUS variations of this type of cheat. There is a speed hack that exploits packet loss/terrible M$ netcode. And furthermore, there is a hack that allows the pistol to zoom in as much as the sniper. I have no doubt that there are other cheats as well.

In the past I have commended Gearbox/M$ Studios for patching the game in those first two years or so. In fact one of the very first patches Gearbox released was RCON support with auto-banning. They were actually playing the game and dealing with the same issues we were. Bungie had nothing to do with any of this, nada. They were busy on Halo 2 Xbox, a crappy game to say the least devoid of any difficulty or requiring much skill. For them to come back 6 years later and even touch this game is just insulting. The game is what it is and has been for a long time. Why don't they leave Halo PC alone now and fix the other disaster known as H2v?
If Roger is going to play around with a 6 year old game as a hobby, why not release the source code to the real community, the people that actually play and have developed as best they can workarounds and fixes for Microsoft's mistakes? I will say it again, Bungie should devote their energy to H2v. As someone who got ripped off on that game, I feel sorry for the people still trying to play it. What a disaster. Feel free to continue calling me an idiot, I honestly don't care one bit. The older gamers who remember Oni, and the Myth series should be shouting from the rooftops that what Bungie has become to PC gaming is nothing more than a detriment.

They can't release because they won't talk with Microsoft about it.

Can't wait for 1.09 CE either (my Halo is locked up by these IE/Windows patches incompatibilities).

Sawnose, any ETA for this one ?

(and thank you so much for handling all this)

He cannot legally release the source code. Also those of us that are from the marathon generation are disappointed.

Honestly. I am going to be straight up about this. I hardly play multiplayer games. I thought Halo 2 was fine. Singleplayer worked fine. nothing was broken with map loading and rendering and playing the maps. I don't see that as a problem, Multiplayer is a whole different ball-game.

The test patch for CE is ready.
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/halopc/patch/haloce109.zip

The only changes are the ones from PC 1.09.

Let me know how it goes. This version is not network-compatible with any other build.

Hence my lobby showing no server. :( Is that only temporary ?

Oh, and The Message in the lobby still talks about the manual update required at http://microsoft...

Why is this? Is there a change in the actual netcode which makes playing between 1.08 and 1.09 impossible, or did you just not make the build appear as 1.08?

oops, updated with the new server, thanks.

re: no-net-work-compatible, that's to give you assurance when running the new client that you're only going to see servers that are secure against the known exploits. I figure that's better than leaving you wondering if a given server is safe or bug-prone.

I want to thank sawnose for keeping halo alive and for continuing to patch it.

I found this patch in the hopes that it would fix a long time problem I've had. Ever since I've switched to a 64 bit operating system Halo has had uncontrollable lag on my machine. Usually i have a ping somewhere between 30 and 100. For the first 30 minutes everything usually plays fine but then lag will slowly set in it gets worse and worse until finally I can't walk straight at which point restarting my computer usually solves the problem. Now with the reading I've done it appears this has something to do with bad netcode introduced to support 56k players. I'm wondering if there is a solution.

If not I'm wondering if there is a way for the community to help. hopefully a way that is actually helpful. I know it is unlikely for halo to be opensourced (maybe as a political move by microsoft to freak out the linux community?) But maybe it is possible to recruit some coders from the online community to fix the netcode. Or maybe someway to get more people from the original team to release a final patch that most everyone can be satisfied with? Just throwing ideas out there and trying to find a way that will make halo a more solid online game.

Also I did try the 1.09 patch and it does fix it asking about ram and such for me. I tested it on Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate RTM, and everything seems to be working except for the lag for me.

I appreciate your concern, but I'm a little concerned and confused.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this patch only for 64-bit editions of Windows, IE patches, and the haloboom exploit? Unless there is an undisclosed fix, I don't see any risk in clients connecting to older server versions, especially since that's what the patch is already doing for Halo PC.

Forcing yet another move to 1.09 will destroy the existing community support. Oh well, at least because of Halo's poor method of updating (not going by the exe, but rather the value in the registry), I guess we can just stick with 1.08 but force OpenSauce to change the build version to 1.09.

Either way, thanks for your support.

1.09 CE dedi server runs OK on WinXP Pro 64 with latest IE8 patches.
1.09 CE client runs OK on XP Home and Vista 64 Home Premium both fully patched.
Can connect to my 1.09 CE dedi server running on my LAN.
Can't even try to connect to a dedi on WAN cuz my LAN dedi is the only 1.09 test server running ATM.

so, if I understand well, I can choose between the plague and cholera :

- a non-working CE 1.08 (because of incompatible IE patches)

- or a working CE 1.09 whith barely no server at the moment, and, even in the long run, a split userbase (just look at the thousands still playing CE 1.06 comparend to the undreds playing CE 1.08)

If the only risk if I play with an unpatched 1.08 CE server is that I may see it crash suddenly, I think I'd gladly use a 1.09 patch (so that I can circumvent the IE ptaches issue) taht would be compatible with CE 1.08 servers (so that I can find servers online).

Ya that would be my dedi (smorgasbord). Feel free to test it.
The more testing the better, before Roger rolls out the final version
with the client auto-update.
I'm running all standard maps now to minimize dropouts.

BTW, you can dl the 1.08 patch in these forums if you need to rollback,
(not recommended if you also need to rollback the IE8 security patches to run Halo).
Halo 1 PC 1.08 has [been] released by Sawnose 8/6/2008
