Bungie faces a unique problem with aerial combat in Halo 2. Obviously the fan base would love another flying craft, more than likely from human origin. And with what we know about "Assault" game mode and the fact that human teams can be pitted against alien teams, it would seem likely (although unconfirmed) that the humans would have their own flying craft. But right now the Banshee is an extremely comfortable vehicle, made so because it was the only one from the original game of its kind. This makes them creating another vehicle either a redundancy of the Banshee or an uncomfortable-controlling craft. And we as fans don't want either.

Another problem is that there needs to be a balance without making them too similar in control and style. The Banshee is very easy vehicle to use, so they need to make it different in some form, but they still would want people to still want to use it despite the other new vehicle. So, they can't make the new vehicle easier and with better weapons. There has to be a balance.

The vehicle I thought of is a two man craft, the bulk of it an elongated shaft similar to the ones used in the fighter planes of the first half of last century (about one and a half the size of the Banshee). The top of the shaft would be open and have two seats, one pointing forward (the driver) and the other pointing toward the rear with a turret similar to the Warthog's mounted in back. The wings could actually slant diagonally towards the ground and forward (the inverse of how they are on modern planes), making it an aesthetically original look.

Now the way this would work is that there would be a pilot, he would board into the front seat and would handle the control machinations as well as the missile launcher. It would have a timer similar to the one on the Scorpion Tank (delaying fire appropriately during reloading). The vehicle would control using a similar technology to the Pelicans, and would accelerate around the same speed as a Banshee. The rear gunner would carry the main assault support, firing 12.7 x 99mm rounds in a full 180 degree direction (meaning that it would only cover the rear of the craft, and to the left and right). This basically means that the driver would have control over the missles and the rear gunner would control fire fights to the rear of the craft, forcing the driver and the gunner to be in constant communication with each other one where other crafts are in their vacinity.

This would do several things. Apart from being an interesting build and using the same technology and weapons scheme of the other human vehicles (making it seem realistic within the Halo universe), it allows the Banshee to remain a "wanted item" instead of pushing it to the side completely with a bigger, better vehicle. People will still want to fly by themselves and have full control over the weapons, making the Banshee worthwhile. However, it also adds a new dynamic (or at least a new take on the old), forcing the pilot to use his skills at controlling the craft, and getting his gunner into position (much like we had to take out the opposition in the air and on the ground. It would require more teamwork and co-ordination than with a Warthog because you're dealing with multiple levels and planes, as well as opposition fire from in the air and on the ground below. With Xbox Live it would be perfect.

I stopped reading about half-way through ... but all that typing was kind of a waste of time considering Bungie is in the final steps of the production process of Halo 2 ... but decent idea... Flying's fun but let's not forget that Halo is a first person shooter not a first person team based flying/shooting game. I think bungie is going to keep the auxilary entertainment basic and stick to nailing the fundamentals...

They should scrap the warthog. We don't need any of those blasted team vehicles in Halo.

Also don't forget the Banshee has a new boost to consider. I am for a flying vehcile that holds more than one.

I am sorry it was meant to be sarcastic. The other guy did not want team vehicles for planes so I took his reasoning to the fullest extent.

Yeah, I'm aware of this, but my idea wasn't to get them to put it in the game, but to show what a good idea would be for the game. It seems obvious, although not confirmed that there would be a human variation of the Banshee, since afterall Halo 2's multiplayer is being touted as "UNSC vs. Covenant" and that it takes place on Earth (as place where there would be flying vehicles if they existed). That being said, a vehicle like I mentioned is not unlikely in that it provides balance, insures the quality of the Banshee remains intact this second time around and provides a new dynamic which doesn't interfere with the the first person aspect of the game.

Flying's fun but let's not forget that Halo is a first person shooter not a first person team based flying/shooting game. I think bungie is going to keep the auxilary entertainment basic and stick to nailing the fundamentals...

Plus, Halo's two central drawing agents are vehicle control and crisp enertaining multiplayer, things which aren't always consistent with FPS games and make Halo stand out. I seriously doubt Bungie will keep their "auxilary entertainment basic" considering they plan on having twice as many controllable vehicles this time around and a milieu of mulitplayer facets which involve them.

Thank you sir. I'm not certain if they'll have anything like this idea, but I'm pretty sure whatever they have cooked up that will rely heavily upon three things that the original game did and that separated it from the run-of-the-mill FPS:

1) Good crisp and clean multiplayer (games, maps, control, etc.).

2) Significant use of vehicles to get from point A to point B, but to also provide ample dimensions during combat.

3) Communication. During LANs it's useable, during Xbox Live it will be fundamental.

This is what I based the idea for this human aerial vehicle. It should be interesting to see what Bungie has up their sleeves.

The warthog is awesome, IF you know how to use it. I think this type of flying vehicle is a great idea. It is definitely balanced and adds a nice twist to gameplay, especially on xbox live. BUT, would this have homing missiles? It would be odd with their level of technology, but it might take away some good strategy.

I'd say no, but intsead a straight on firing missle similar to the Scorpion Tank, even with the few second delay between firing. This would force the pilot to concentrate on flying and call out positions to the rear gunner (ie. "inbound at 11 o'clock"). I was also toying with an even greater handicap, like the missles actually being dropped out of a cargo hold (letting the momentum carry them forward to their destination) as in Battlefield 1942, making the pilot not only hesitate on using them but only use them in certain situations against land-based targets. The fact that the technology in Battlefield 1942 is way different than Halo, and they're hundreds of years apart would make that notion unlikely, but I'm sure someone could think of a way around it.

Do mean a high explosive shell like the tank fires or a faster flying rocket or a gauss cannon like the one in the E3 demo.

To be perfectly honest, either the rocket or the high explosive shell from the Scorpion, I feel indifferent about that part of the vehicle. The great element is being able to take out people from behind, something that Banshee's can't do and something that if you've ever been in a dogfight with someone, you understand the significance of that element of gameplay. Plus, that there is little to none forward fire it would balance the two vehicles out. You couldn't have some hot shot just snag the said vehicle and expect to commit to serious air combat, with rockets they're not going to get far. With the second pilot, the rear gunner, you can achieve a level of team play in it, as well as maintain balance between the two vehicles.
