Hey, I'm new at the dedicated server thing. I figured I might as well put my bandwidth to use and share a little when I'm away from my computer, which is all evenings nights and weekends. But anyway, I have a couple questions:

How can I host my own custom games? I know how to make them from the regular retail Halo PC but from there I don't know exactly how to make the DS use them. Would I just type that gametype's name in like sv_mapcycle_add hangemhigh "This Custom Game" or do I need to tell it where those files are kept somehow?

And is there any way I can know that everything is working when I'm not around? Like a log file of some sort that might list players that played in games I hosted. Does such a thing exist for Halo PC?

Log files were added as console command for the Halo CE DS - If you don't know what CE is - it is a mod released by Gearbox for Halo PC that allows further customization.

sv_mapcycle_add hangemhigh "This Custom Game"

Is right on the money. Halo defaults all custom gametypes to a directory within My Documents/My Game/Halo (or something like that). This is where the DS looks for custom gametypes. If you haven't messed with any of this, it should work just fine for you.

If you're interested in running a server on Halo CE and using log files, let me know - I can help you a lot with that.

Peace.

I have Halo CE but I've never really messed with it much. How could I go about doing that?

Just like with Halo PC, Halo CE has a separate DS program that you have to download. You should be able to find it wherever you can download CE. It works pretty much the same way as HPC DS, except it has some extra console commands like log files and auto-tk-ban. You can also use a program called IBEx - Init Builder Extended to help you create the server Init files. If you PM me you e-mail address, I'll e-mail you the program, along with instructions.

The only downside to hosting a CE DS is that you usually won't have a lot of people join, but if you post the server name in the forums, the good folks here will help you out and try to visit often.

Another difference between the two is that they don't share any information - If you create a custom gametype on HPC and try to access it running an HCE DS, you won't be able to find it. It's not too entirely complicated beyond that if you already know how to set up a DS for HPC. I recommend it.

EDIT: I got it. Man, I took some stupid pills before trying to figure this out. It's up and running now.
