Brutes won't be on Reach, it won't make any sense because they are not allowed on the battlefield.

But do the brutes really look like the kind of (Things) to follow orders.
There could be renegade Brutes that just wanted to get in on the action.

And they should also be on multiplayer.

Big Team Battle Multiflag/Slayer on Standoff/Valhalla/Sandtrap/Avalanche = Win

It would be nice to see Drones attack you like the robots in the Matrix 3 War. Just several of them working as a unit charging at you.

They might be a bit tough if an entire swarm went after you. Well, more than a little tough...I can see groups of like 4 chasing after a single person, but a whole swarm would have to be on legendary if anywhere, just to be mean.

The enemies look just as cartoony as every other game with animated alien character models. The only thing they need to work on are human models.

*points at Gears of War*

I know it's a different art style, but they're hardly cartoony.

but with the pretty realistic environments of Halo, having cartoon characters that are brightly coloured run around ruins the immersion. If they were a bit more menacing or real, they would fit in better and be scarier to fight. I do NOT want the game to look like GoW, where all the aliens are retextured human models. Also NOT like the HW cinematics, where the elites were too realistic for a game. Just....better than they do currently.

"YOUR DESTRUCTION IS THE WILL OF THE GODS, AND WE ARE THEIR INSTRUMENT."

I love Elites, first and foremost. My favorites are the Halo 2 and Halo Wars Sangheili, and these are my reasons.
Halo 2
-Elites stood tall and proud, and when I saw one come around the corner with a Sword on Legendary, from Zealots to Heretics to Spec Ops, a tiny thought erupted from the bowels of my brain. "Oh -blam!-."
-Sangheili were more true to their nature, even if the Worts were few and the Blarghs were scarce.
-Basically, these Elites were pretty cool guys. Eh killed all the Flood, Humans, Heretics, Brutes, and doesn't afraid of anything.
-While slim, they were not just agile weaklings, but viscious, honorable warriors.
-Their formfitting armor didn't look bad like a certain trilogy's final game made it. (Wow, did I butcher English or what?)

Halo Wars
-Tall, musclebound, alien bada**es. These guys truely gave off a warrior's aura.
-While slightly (and I use that term loosely) incorrect proportionally, they still seemed more like Halo CE and 2's Sangheili than Halo 3's/
-Face it. Their armor was beautiful. Don't get mad at me, I know we saw them (best) in cutscenes, nonetheless.

In Reach, I'm hoping for Elites to look like a mix between the above two game's Sangheili soldiers. Call me biased, but I'm choosing not to review and discuss the other races to a large extent.
@OP: Good, though some parts I wasn't a fan of. Brutes past the events of Halo 2 or so SHOULD have Power Armor. I will always miss their cool lil flags, however. While the Jackals are space pirates and mercenaries, I don't see why they should be changed. Not all mercenaries have to be scary, creepy lil wierdos. Jackals are fine how they are, their Bungie's, and if Bungie made them like this, then that's that. Grunts? Meh. Won't say much about them, though I would like more viscious tendencies. The Prophets aren't supposed to look too threatening. They were done great. No complaints. Hunters? I would like an occasional Hunter with damaged armor, a missing shoulderpiece, some lost backspikes, even a crumpled shield. Then again, I'd like effects like these on -all- armor, for -all- races. Good post, OP. Your thread is saved, and I hope it becomes a hot topic. It certainly deserves, for touching on the issues it did.

With love and worts bountiful,
Zero.

I would agree with you more on the cross between Halo 2 and Wars Elites. Wars looked too scary/real for Halo, but did have beautiful, regal armour. If the Reach armour took aspects from that and gave it to H2 era elites (i.e. tall and brave), then had some different AI behaviours that made them seem more important, I'd be more than happy.

Just as a note: Reach fell before Halo 1. If this game is entirely a prequel and doesn't span for more than a month, they shouldn't have power armour (brutes).

The reason prophets are on there is because although they looked fine in Halo 2, something changed with Halo 3. I'm not sure what, but Truth just looked and sounded like a deranged old man.

Jackals I kinda agree don't need much changed. Read the OP again, it states that all they really need is some of their own culture's weapons and armour that distinguishes them from the other covenant. They, unlike the Brutes and Elites, are hardly religious zealots.

Thanks for agreeing on the Hunters though. I REALLY think the Hunter race could be expanded beyond blue and gold walking tanks and scarabs. They are probably one of the least fleshed out races in the Covenant, and have the potential to be so much more than just a walking tank. I read somewhere they they don't give a crap about other COvenant, I think it was Fall of Reach - if they acted like this in the game, simple stepping on anybody between them and you, it would be great. It would be even better if when their bond brother was killed they actually went crazy - for example, they might roar and charge forwards, battering anything between them and you out of the way, including enemies like Jackals.

Brutes are fine when they're not fought en masse in an open area, since they don't move around enough. e.g. they're boring at the dam on Sierra 117, but the barracks on Crow's Nest is pretty damn fun.

cool ideas, but I wouldn't like having scary grunts in the game.

  • 09.10.2009 12:55 AM PDT

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Actually, in Halo CE, Zealots, Stealth Elites, and SpecOps all shared a different set of armor from the regular 2 the Minors and Majors wore. Theirs was Sharper, particularly in the helmet area, and featured longer, pointy shoulder pads.

Minors and Majors had the regular Halo CE combat Helmet, with shoulders that cut off and were actually shaped like the Halo 2 Shoulders, or there was the other variant, with the curved helmet, and sleeker design on the arms and legs.

Lets face it, Halo CE perms need to come back.

Iris=win.
Look for the signs, the keepers of the flame.
They will Lead you to war, and perhaps, to victory.

Arguing on the internet is like participating in the special olympics. You might win, but you're still retarded.

HEY BUNGIE, I WOULD LIKE AN BETA TEST PLOX KTHNX

I like what you said about making the covenent feel more dangerous and interconnected, and I think some of your other ideas have a bit of merit.

All in all I loved Halo 3, but the encounters tend to have no replay value, and I'll tell you why - linear, scripted gameplay. EVERYTHING should have a bit more randomness to it. How many ally's do you have? Those two snipers, where will they be this time? Will there we a third? Maybe as I'm driving along the Tsavo highway a phantom and a couple banshees will come flying out of nowhere, dropping troops and pestering me?

I understand the difficulties in creating such a game, but that's what bungie has always done best: they create incredible, never-before-scene experiences.

I loved how The first half of Halo 3 felt like you WERE finishing the fight; engaging in geurilla warfare against a superior enemy. YOur ammo and troops and limited, so you have to rely on special operations and superb tatics. Punch a hole in the AAA defense? Sure, that makes sense, we can hit them hard that way.

Why the hell is there no one defending these two wraiths and the battery? Heck, why are there only two wraiths? Why is that such a huge problem for the fleet in the first place? BOMB IT.

I dunno, feels like the whole game could have been on a grander scale. Like the Ark mission, but even bigger, with more encounters, more enemies and allies, and just MORE.

Enemy perms would be nice. I never noticed those differences in anything beyond councillors and honour guards, to be honest - they must have been relatively subtle.

Regardless, there should be more variation between elite and grunt/Jackal ranks than there was in Halo 3. Grunts could have the old curlback fin as a permutation, along with perhaps a different type of 'claw' length protruding from their arms & knees. Jackals are currently told apart by shield colour - they could be told apart in other ways, like armour and skin colour, feathers etc. Elites I would love to see having the squid helm and spike helm, alongside some H3 variants and maybe some new ones for specific ranks like Zealots - hell, even just a larger than normal shoulderpad for them would be nice.

@EA shadow: I totally agree. Halo 3 was limited by its engine and the 360's power though, which was unfortunate. I like your idea about different encounters every time, but it's a bit hard to code in. It'd involve having some scripted areas for dialogue, then other area that had a special script that spawned a random type of enemy at a logical spawn point and gave it an AI path - e.g. a phantom spawning over a ridge and flying on a set patrol path over your location, or two wraiths spawning on a hilltop and automatically shelling a building, or a squad of Brutes/elites spawning near a human building and storming it. It would take a while, but I guess it'd work like the Fallout 3 random encounters.

Spanish Revolution

Agreed, elites in halo 3 are just silly dinosaurs, they should look a bit more like the halo wars one(those are scary) and they should have a very advanced A.I

  • 09.10.2009 5:57 AM PDT

llamalizard, I agree with you on all points except for the Grunts.

Grunts are meant to be the comic relief characters of Halo.

Should the look more serious?

Maybe.

Should the sound more serious or have deeper voices?

Absolutely not.

But bravo on all other accounts, each species should feel distinct and well represented.

  • 09.10.2009 6:09 AM PDT

i would really love it if Bungie couls make the ememies more like they are in the books. in halo1 and 2 the elites were badass and took so many bullets and melee hits to kill them! they shold be like that in Reach. in the books they are described as being nearly as powerful as a Spartan II... (''Kurt had seen john get up close and personal with one before and had just come out on top'')

aslo in the books they descibe the grunts as the fodder of the covanant i.e. there are literally hundreds of them at one time! that would be amazing to see if Bungie could do that (obviously it would be difficult on that scale) and of course make them ''easier'' to kill (in relation to their numbers)-if that makes sense?

the hunters always work in pairs but it would be cool to see one single one some time, battle worn and shield scratched etc.. the idea that addition troops get dropped in if the ememy havent been killed in a certain time is also a very good one. one aspect of ODST Firefight im looking forward to is the fact that no wave will be the same i.e. one wave many hold 6 Grunts 4 Jackles and 3 elites but then the next time you play that stage it may be 10 Grunts 3elites and 2 hunters! thats cool

As for multi-player, i would love to see HUGE maps! like in Battle field or something like that! we all know MC can run and lump fast and high but i still would love to see bigger maps. Sandtrap (Sand TARP) is a very big map in H3 but there is nothing around! i would love to see a map that scale but with buildings and random objects to find cover beside! like in Call of Duty 4.

Yeah, I guess that if grunts are comedic they shouldn't act seriously all the time...I can imagine a creepy grut with a high-pitched voice running off and wailing about Flipyap.

@barackRifle: I think coding in hundreds of grunts at once might be difficult. Most game engines really can't support that AI at once.

p.s i would love some suicide grunts from halo wars in reach because they are little sods to deal with in large numbers on halo wars

Just because grunts have no say in politics doesn't mean they're not aggressive.

The Elites only hunch when in a combat type situation, They should behave the wa they did in H2, upright until the bullets fly. But i do completley agree w/ everything else. They need to re-define charecter behvior in the games better as well as their looks.
