Grunts should have armour that actually looks plated on more, that sound more like how they were described in the books. They'd shuffle around and make a few less funny comments, with a slightly deeper pitch. They would be seen in situations OUTSIDE of standing behind an elite for no reason - maybe pre-defined animations for certain areas, like a grunt carrying a motion scanner or a couple scouting through some trees on their own.

Grunts are meant to make funny comments. Without their comments Halo would be much more boring their funny part of the games. Without grunts yelling funny comments Halo Reach would be too serious.

They'd still make funny comments, it's just that there would be a bit more than just joking lines for them.

GO look at the H2 brutes. They weren't too bad to fight and are a slightly underdeveloped version of what I meant. These ideas are stylised to a degree, because concepts are never exactly followed in games.
.

I hate Halo 2 brutes because they look not so alien like. Halo 3 brutes at least look bit more alien. I hope that there are no brutes in Halo Reach

They're not likely to be in, I think. The reason they're in the OP is because if they ARE in, they need to fit with the established brute sandbox under tartarus - underarmoured creatures that are quite brutal, used to guard prisoners and not much else.

There are two things on this forum that piss me off;
Idiots and group invites.
What's even worse, is that I can never seem to get away from either of them ¬_¬

Nice ideas, I think Bungie should take not ;)

  • 10.13.2009 12:54 AM PDT

You have a very good set of ideas. I like the direction you favor. More grit less color. With the exception of HALO:CE none of the games since have givin the player that, "I am lost and have to fight my way out to survive in the middle of a war" feel. Remember the Library?

I love the idea of the brutes looking like what one Bungie employee described as, "pissed off bikers". In HALO 2 they were close and HALO 3 they lost it entierly. They looked like shiny rhino-apes. Not somthing that could tear your arms off.

Elites will have to look proud and honorable. It is their asthetic. HALO:CE had this down and HALO Wars made them look sic.

Jackels need to look more ravinous and pirate like.

Like in the prolog of the book the grunts need to act more dog like and vicious. However retaining thier comedic role is a must as it is always funny to hear them say some new line to bust up the mood.

Hunters were quite scary to fight in H3 once you added the extra skull effects to them. But to see them look like veterans would be sweet.

Another poster mentioned something about Drone queens. I like that idea.

Over all I think Bungie should at least give this thread a look over and maybe they might see somthing they could use.

Great ideas OP.

Source? Specifically on the second part, since grunts were pretty much the lowest in Covenant society and essentially used as cannon fodder?

The less than a second latency of online play is a better system to play off of than more health.

You realize this system is just as host based, right? because if you're fighting host, or someone with a better connection to host, and you each start firing at the same time, his BULLETS will register first, giving him slightly more health if the melees happen at the same time.

So would you rather have the BS of both, or just one?

Regarding enemy behavior:
It would be nice to see elites and brutes get into some minor confrontations. It is such a shame that the apparently long running feud between the two species was only slightly explained as it was erupting to all out civil war in halo 2, and not even existent in halo 1 (while I have always disliked this little throw in to the halo story line, for simply adding unnecessary plot developments, it is now here to stay).
They could have brutes (still clearny under command of brutes) showing some disrespect to elites maybe even erupting into small physical confrontations (nothing lethal just punches etc). While in combat brutes could simply break free from what cohesion the rest of the elite guided squad may have and either go out and do their own uncoordinated shooting or simply charge headlong.

While the nice part is questionable it is mentioned that elites views grunts as more respectable after they led some attempted revolt. This was mentioned somewhere in one of the more recent novels (perhaps Cole Protocol as Contact Harvest is mainly brute-centric).

That's one elite out of literally thousands. In deleted scenes from Halo 2, and the books, grunts are described as cannon fodder and treated as such.

i never said that they weren't cannon fodder, but some elites treated them fairly. Zuka 'Zamamee also treated yapyap nicely.

It's still uncommon in Covenant society. Elites are relatively likely to...punish grunts when they do something wrong, or make them run errands. Brutes...well, I get the feeling that brutes don't care about grunts at all. We could have brutes that push grunts out of the way, roar in their faces...generally abuse them a heap.

To clarify: Elites 'discipline' grunts. They won't usually beat them up, but if the grunt does something stupid they will.

Brutes abuse grunts. They'd push them away if they got too close, kick them periodically if annoyed, shout in their faces to scare the grunts, maybe even grab them by their feet and drop them if they were really bored.

Even in cinematics if it was touched as well, just a general disrespect for each other and some bantering.

Yeah, species rivalry would be great. i only have 40 characters left in the main post though, so I can't include it (sadface).

So essentially, you mean stuff like brutes and elites fighting, jackals perhaps biting grunts, that sort of thing? but minor scuffles, as in they don't kill each other?
