We could drive VTOLs in Halo 3 so why not?

...So you know how there are banshees in Halo 3 Campaign? They aren't too terrifying, they just fly around, shoot at you with their plasma, in slow shallow runs, and fly off.

But in multiplayer, with a human behind the wings, the banshee becomes a slaughtering machine. Especially with the boost and the fuel rod cannon, it takes a team to bring down this monstrocity.

...Soooo... why do you think the phantom / pelican is going to be any different? It would not be balanced in the slightest. Nobody would use it for transport, it would be a flying tank. People would just use it like a battering ram to splatter people into walls. Dodging a boosting banshee is hard enough. Can you imagine trying to jump out of the way of a pelican or a phantom intent on grinding your bones to paste?

And lets not forget, they can just hover out of reach and take you down with their guns. At least with the hornet and banshee you can kill them with focus fire from your team with ARs / Smgs, but do you think it will be that easy with drop ships?

It makes no sense from a balance standpoint, or from a strategy standpoint, because you should never put all your eggs in one basket.

I agree with you to a certain point, yes it would be a flying tank, but i'm sure if Bungie were to put it in a rediculousy large Multiplayer map they would take off the guns and missles. And missle turrets around all over the map, and rockets on the map could allow for at elast some sort of balance. They would be slower than most aircraft, seeing as how they are susceptable, spelling, to AA fire. But some serious attempts at balancing would be have to be made on bungies part

I wish I was still legendary.

You know a hornet is VTOL, right?

Pelicans in MM would suck - ever tried killing one on Halo: Custom edition?

Indeed, so why bother?

If people want to have a pelican flying experience, they can have a small section of the campaign where you fly a pelican. Its simple in Campaign because you don't need to balance squat.

...In other news, I wonder if the GOW forums (if there is such a thing) is plagued by constant "I wanna ride a brumak in multiplayer" threads...

I'm sure it plagues it more than the Black Plague in medieval Europe

Not as a default in any map, but in customs, no limits!

If Halo 3 has done anything, it has shown us how creative we can be. If a player wants to put a pelican or phantom in a HUGE map, let them. If the map isn't good, no one will use it. If it does find its way in matchmaking, it means that the map as inceadibally balanced, and the phantom/pelican worked well.

Why say "no" if it is completely optional. If only a few good games came out of it, it would be a success. However, I garuentee you that WAY more than a few good games/maps would come of this.
