I've been wondering lately about how Reach will handle player emblems.

I have come to think that if Reach is supposed to have a different feel from the older Halos, should it contain that feel by having fully customizable emblems? What I mean by this is you can place simple shapes, such as circles, squares, helmets, swords, etc. inside of a box to be displayed as your emblem instead of using the classic "choose a premade background to go along with your premade emblem".

I know that this could lead to bad things such as immature people making inappropriate things that should not appear in an emblem, but we already have this in Halo 3, so it wont necessarily be easy to prevent.

What do you guys think, should we have:

(Choice 1) Fully customizable emblems
or
(Choice 2) Combination of choice 1 and choice 3.
or
(Choice 3) Classic emblems but with more options to choose from such as combining all emblems and backgrounds from Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 3: ODST while adding a few new ones.

EDIT: Also if you decide to post, please explain why you choose that choice, even if you are just quoting someone else. I you are just going to post Choice X, then only vote in the poll.

This would be very much appreciated as it adds to the discussion.

Dom ~ Thread Killer

Choice 3.

Middle ground, Keep some of the classic Halo we know and love, but give us something new to make things more interesting. Good thread.

Nice to see that 2 of the 3 people that clicked choice 3 posted, thanks you two.

I don't like that 0 of the 3 people that clicked choice 1 did not post, I would like to see your opinions.

EDIT: I hope that whoever clicked choice 1 did not click it just because it was "Choice 1"...

If it were so easy.

I went with Choice 3, it'd be good to have some familiarity mixed with some new.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

I would actually combine 1 and 3.

The main issue that I am aware of for fully customizable emblems would be people making pornographic/offensive emblems. This has been the case with games like Mario Cart.
I do want the freedom to generate my own icon, since I have a specific one in mind, but I have a feeling that others will abuse this.

One way Bungie could have both the creativity of the custom emblems without the hassle of inappropriate ones, is to utilize the Parental Controls in the 360. If it is set to restricted, then instead of custom Icons, the game would only show the "preset" icons that ship with the game.

And of course, you could report an individual for having an inappropriate emblem through the "complain" system.

Number 3 sounds good.

I understand why you would like to restrict the customization for some, but it still wont prevent it since some preset icons will form innapropriate images when combined and colored properly.

And since you said you would like to combine both, I'll change choice 2 to combination since no one voted in it yet, therefore it wont screw up the poll, unless you already clicked one of the three choices.
