Subject: Halo: Reach to be the first FPS in TRUE 1080p?

"This is the definitive Halo made by the people who created Halo."

- Martin O'Donnell

Hello everyone! As far as I know, there hasn't been a SINGLE FPS game for the Xbox 360 that is in TRUE 1080p high-definition. What I mean by TRUE 1080p is a NATIVE resolution of 1920x1080 (1,920 horizontal lines of resolution by 1,080 vertical lines of resolution, resulting in 2,073,600 pixels total). EVERY FPS game for the Xbox 360 that says "HDTV 1080p" on the back of the case actually has a lower resolution that is upscaled to 1920x1080. For example, the actual NATIVE resolution of Halo 3 is 1152x640, but it is upscaled to 1920x1080. As far as I know, the ONLY Xbox 360 games that are in TRUE 1080p high-definition are Fifa Street 3, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, and Virtual Tennis 3 (Demo), none of which are FPS games. This is the PERFECT opportunity for Bungie to make a breakthrough and make Halo: Reach the VERY FIRST FPS game for the Xbox 360 that is in TRUE 1080p. If not true 1080p, then at least maintain an aspect ratio of 16:9. If it doesn't have an aspect ratio of 16:9, then the image would be stretched when being upscaled to 1920x1080, causing the image quality to degrade and circles to look like ovals. To determine if an image has an aspect ratio of 16:9, simply divide the number of horizontal lines of resolution by 16 and the number of vertical lines of resolution by 9. If both quotients are the same, then it has an aspect ratio of 16:9. For example, an image with a resolution of 1920x1080 has an aspect ratio of 16:9, because 1,920 divided by 16 equals 120 and 1,080 divided by 9 equals 120 (notice how both quotients are 120). Halo 3 has a resolution of 1152x640, so 1,152 divided by 16 equals 72 and 640 divided by 9 equals approximately 71.1. Both quotients are different, meaning that it does not have an aspect ratio of 16:9. Please Bungie, take this into consideration. This took me a while to type. I know TRUE 1080p might take up a lot of resources, so atleast maintain an aspect ratio of 16:9. What do you guys think...?

Just for the record, I like 720p better than 1080i. =D

Graphics and HD are good and all, but I would prefer better gameplay.

Yes, but not close enough. ;)

I completely agree. Like I said, TRUE 1080p might take up some resources, but maintaining an aspect ratio of 16:9 shouldn't hurt anything. All it would do is prevent the image from being stretched when being upscaled to 1920x1080, which would maintain the picture quality and make circles look like circles, not ovals.

No chance for it to lag.

WHO SAID YOU COULD CLICK ON MY MORE BUTTON!

If you compare 720 to 1080 720 looks better and 1080 is fuzzy.

Its not the same as movies in that case 1080 would look better. but in video games................... 720p FTW!

Most HDTVs max out at 1280 X 720. You need to check your facts because 1920x1080 isn't supported by a lot of HDTVs. Also Bungie is one of the developers that supports 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen.

No. To make a game like Halo complete with story and it's giant amount of art assets in 1080p would waste too much disc space. Every texture would have to be in a much higher resolution that just wouldn't be worth it. I'd have to guess it'll just be 720p.

720p is true HD and its actually better for playing games in some cases.

Even if Halo 3 isn't TRUE 1080p, who cares? It still looks pretty good, the "slightly" improved graphics in Halo 3 ODST look amazing! I'm sure Halo Reach won't disappoint.

And it's our fault you don't have a television that can process the best quality image?

I really do hope this game can process true 1080p.

Every single "decent" HDTV I saw in Best Buy processed full 1080p, so YOU get your facts straight.

The "p" means progressive whixh means you see the entire screen in the same amount of time the "i" would show half. "I" means interlaced.

1080p is a massive waste of resources, and the few games that managed to pull it off look like cr@p. It has more than double the pixels in 720p, which games are struggling with already.
But antialiasing is quite important. Those jaggies really hurt...

Higer frames per second over true 1080p anyday.

Just because 1080i has a higher resolution than 720p doesn't mean it's better. The "p" in 720p stands for "progressive" and the "i" in 1080i stands for "interlaced." Progressive means that the WHOLE frame is displayed every 1/30th of a second. Interlaced means that every other horizontal line of resolution is displayed every 1/60th of a second, meaning that only half the number of horizontal lines of resolution is being displayed at any given time. This means that 1080i only displays 540 horizontal lines of resolution at any given time, while 720p ALWAYS displays all 720 horizontal lines of resolution at any given time. In a sense, 540p could be considered the progressive equivalency of 1080i.

Whether it would fit on the disc is not the problem. If anything, the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) wouldn't be able to handle all of the resources. That's why I'm saying if Bungie can't make it true 1080p, at least make it have a 16:9 aspect ratio.

IDo you really think that 1080p would really affect the frame rate...?

I'm pretty sure all NTSC video material displays a frame every 1/60th of a second, including 720p and 1080p.

Halo 3 is running at 30 fps.

Sad but true... Halo 1 > Halo 2>>>Halo 3

No. If Bungie made the game in native 1080p, they would have to sacrifice the quality of the graphics. I'd much rather have 720p (not 640p) with 2x AA and 2x AF than 1080p. 1080p is not a realistic goal for graphics intensive games like Halo - we'll have to wait until the Xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called) before we'll see any high profile games get 1080p. I'm mostly concerned with Bungie making the gameplay better - Halo 3's is easily the worst of the trilogy so far.

Also, resolution, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering have nothing whatsoever to do with disc space.

I would like to see Bungie at least make the aspect ratio of the game 16:9.

Every time you sneeze into an open Febreze portal the boner-tree drive shaft will spin into ketchup. But it doesn't stop at the number two pizza bell, not even close. It continues into the seventy eight minute long pile of green, sobbing cheese trains with no more butter, but more like the steak owed the tin cans some lovin'.

1080p would be nice, but it just doesn't seem realistic to expect it on the 360. It would be a task more suited for a gaming PC, probably.

The image can still be 16:9 even though the resolution itself isn't. It just needs to be rendered so that the image will be the correct shape when scaled to 16:9.

That might be because interlaced is always poorer than progressive. In terms of actual view for games and TV, the sequence (improving) is : 480p, 1080i, 720p, 1080p. Also, why would we want a native 1080p resolution? Downscaling the picture makes it look like crap. Most people don't have awesome 1080p TVs to play Xbox on.
