The Spartans Book Cover

The book cover was made by the fantastic COL0NEL SANDERS! Go check out his amazing photoshops on the Gallery forum, and don't forget to comment them! Thanks, Sanders!

The video was made by my friend a long time ago, he gave me permission to use it, so I did. It's made up of Halo Wars clips, and the song is All These Things I Hate by Bullet for my Valentine
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: There are twists in this series. For any Halo Wars fans out there, I realize that John, and the other Spartans never actually went to Arcadia, just so you know. As for there being any other twists, I'm not sure. Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading this. I know I do writing it, remember: feedback helps me improve.

Introduction

Spartan 117 kicked down a door, leveling his MA5B assault rifle. Clear. Satisfied, the Spartan activated his HUD through his MJONLIR armor's neural interface, then winked the light green. Three more green dots appeared on the HUD next to his. The Spartan nodded to himself, kicking open the next door. Clear... or so it seemed. 117 had a bad feeling about this, about the room he was in.

He reluctantly kept his rifle leveled, slowly giving the room a short, swift sweep. He heard a sound behind a pile of crates-- a sound no ordinary human would have been able to pick up. Luckily, the Spartan wasn't ordinary. He stopped just before he reached the crates, took a breath, then raised his rifle as he pulled behind them. He had expected to see a rebel soldier... instead, he saw a child, ten years old by the looks of it. She was frightened, crying, and hugging her knees in the corner.

The Spartan awkwardly bent over, studying the kid. She backed into the wall, lip quivering in fear.

"Are you lost?" he asked, sheepishly. No response. The Spartan could tell he was getting nowhere, so he decided a different approach.

"What's your name?" he asked. Still no answer. He sighed, then stood back up, opening comm. "This is 117, do you read?" he reported.

"Loud and clear," came the female voice of Spartan 087.

"I, uh..." the Spartan began awkwardly. "I found a child."

"A child?" 087 asked, surprised.

"Yeah..." 117 said, turning to the girl. She looked at him with eyes full of tears.

"Well... we were ordered to evacuate civilians..." another Spartan, 104, said.

"Affirmitive, but... I'm almost at the objective. If I take her, she'll slow me down. Besides, you can't expect me to bring her into a warzo-" 117 replied, only to be cut off by an explosion, which hit him, sending him sprawling, narrowly missing the child. The girl cried in horror as the wall was blown open, and rebel's poured in.

The Spartan got to his feet, brought up his rifle, and shot down three soldiers with his MA5B. Without a moments hesitation, he sprinted to the girl, gently picked her up, and cradled her in one arm. 117 ran his hardest, clearing the building in ten seconds flat. Once outside, two more rebels awaited.

He stopped, spraying one with his MA5B. His clip ran out, and the other one grinned, about to return the fire. That is, until a round popped through his skull. The man fell to the floor, revealing Spartan 087, waving towards 117. He approached the female Spartan, showing her the child.

"My, god, look at you..." 087 cooed, pulling back her visor, indictating that she, too, was indeed female. The child's face brightened a bit, as she burried it into 087's chest.

"Hustle it up, Spartans," 117 said over comm.

"Sir?" Spartan 051 asked.

"The mission was a failure," 117 explained. "The rebels spotted me, no doubt the target is gone." he finished, clenching his fists. General Rudolf had escaped too many times in the past, gunning down innocent people, dictating cities. And 117 almost had him, if not for this girl...

Spartan 117 looked back at the child, whom 087 held so fond of, comforting and assuring the girl everything would be okay. But she couldn't promise it. Everything wouldn't be okay, not with the rebels, nor the Covenant. Things were going to hell real fast. 117 shook his head, and came to a startling realization: he had failed a mission for the first time.

This is really really good :) I like how the child was more comforted by 87's kind heartedness than john. This is really really great. I was completely absorbed in it, which is rare when i am reading a fanfic. Keep it up!!!

Episode One: Arcadia - Part One - Tough Landing

Spartan leader John 117 strode the corridors of the UNSC Battleship, the Armstrong, in his freshly polished Mark V MJOLNIR armor. Envious eyes watched as he pulled into Kelly 087's quarters. When he walked in, he spotted her waving at the computer screen before powering it off. Kelly turned around, almost running into him.

"Talking to Mia, again?" he asked, reffering to the child the Spartans had saved back on their mission for General Rudolf. She was an orphan now, and resided in a nearby civilian ship known as the Greenhouse. Kelly hesitated for a second.

"Yes." she replied, staring at him up and down. "Why are you armored up? Nobody told me we were going onto the field..." Kelly asked, a little frustrated.

"Well, then, you better double-time it to the armory." 117 said. "We've got a mission on Arcadia."

"Arcadia?" Kelly asked, dumbfounded. "Why the hell are we going into deep space?"

"The Covenant found it." John replied, shaking his head. Kelly's eyes widened a bit. "Now, quit wasting time. Get suited up, we'll be there within the hour. We've got other Spartans there, too."

"Other Spartans?" Kelly asked. It had been a long time since she'd worked with any other Spartan but John, Fred, Linda, or Kurt.

"Yes. Jerome, Douglas, and Alice should be there." John replied, remembering growing up with the three. It'd be an honor to work with them again.

"Yes sir." Kelly said, before making her way towards the armory. John followed her out of her quarters, then went to inform the rest of his squad.

Damn, he thought. The Covenant found another...

- - -

The five Spartans waited in the Pelican dropship as the Armstrong pulled into view of the planet, Arcadia. Just as the UNSC expected, Covenant ships were already battling their forces in orbit.

"All right, you five," the pilot said. "Hold on, things might get a little rough on arrival."

"Understood." John said, speeking for the rest of his team. The Armstrong shuddered, as it was pounded by plasma cannons.

"Damn," the pilot said. A light winked green on the Pelican's console, and he pulled the bird out of the hangar, and into open space. The Spartan's got a good view of the battle from the Pelican's rear glass window. An explosion sounded as the Pelican next to theirs exploded. Within the next few seconds, a plasma bolt hit the cockpit of their Pelican, breaching the glass and killing the pilot. The dropship's alarms flared as oxygen was released into space.

"Damn it! Fred, fly this thing!" John ordered, grabbing onto something so the vacuum wouldn't suck him out into the black. Fred undid the pilot's restraints, and he was immidiately carried away. The Spartan sat down, trying to steer the Pelican towards the planet. He evaded plasma bolts, dodged debris, and cleared Seraph fighters as he breached Arcadia's atmosphere.

"ETA to Pirth, sixty seconds," he informed the Spartans as the damaged Pelican dived towards the ground. Within the next few moments, the Pelican came into view of the groundfloor. Gunfire and explosions could be seen from the cockpit. Fred tried to pull the Pelican to a stop, but couldn't. "Uhm, guys..." he said, nervously.

"What?" John asked, pulling inside the cockpit.

"I can't stop this thing; It's taken too much damage, we have to jump. Now." Fred informed.

"Affirmitive, open the hatch." John said. Fred complied, opening the titanium hatch near the Pelicans rear. "I'll go first." the Spartan leader informed, leaping out. The Pelican was going atleast three hundred miles per hour, and still atleast thirty feet in the air when the Spartan jumped. He was thrown about, then hit the ground with a crash. He slowly came to his feet, turning to see the rest of his Spartans jumping as well.

"All right, on me." John said over comm, investigating the area. A group of marines ran towards him in the distance. Behind them, he could see the warzone that was Pirth. Arcadia's capital city.

He and his team were going to do their best to ensure that this planet didn't share the same fate as Harvest.

Episode One: Arcadia - Part Two - Contact

"Sir?" an ensign of the Greenhouse's crew asked.

"Yes, ensign Brothel?" Captain Claymore answered, turning to him.

"I'm picking up strange readings on the radar, sir... multiple objects coming in. Do you want a visual?" the ensign replied.

The Captan hestated for a few moments, pondering the question. "Put it on the main screen."

"Aye-aye." the ensign took a few seconds to put the visual where everyone could see. What the crew soon lay eyes upon shook their very souls. A Covenant fleet, undoubtedly here as reinforcements for attacking Arcadia.

"My god..." Captain Claymore breathed. The ensign's eyes were blinking repeatedly, as if to make sure he was seeing the right thing. The Greenhouse was not a battleship. It was a civilian transport, with no guns, or military. It's only source of national guard was the security team which kept the passengers in check.

Sure, the Greenhouse was escorted by UNSC warships, the Armstrong being one of them, but not even they could stop the Covenant. Not a fleet of that size. Besides, their escorts were already in combat with the Covenant near orbit. The civilian ship was hiding behind Arcadia's moon. The only option was to escape to the planet which resided below... in Pelicans or life pods. The Greenhouse would be destroyed.

"Sir... what now?" the ensign asked, shaking his head.

"We have to run. We have to try, we can't just sit here! Somebody do something, god damn it!" the Captain shouted.

"Captain... we can't outrun a Covenant ship." the ensign stated, putting his face in his hands.

"Get the civilians off the ship! Everyone evacuate-- give the order!" the Captain decided. The ensign nodded, flipped a switch, and an automated voice was displayed throughout the ship.

"WARNING! All personel evacuate immidiately, this is not a drill." the AI said. The broadcast was repeated over the PA.

Ensign Brothel took one last look at the Covenant armada, then headed towards the life pods.

- - -

"Get down, damn it!" Jerome yelled, yanking a marine into the fox hole. The three Spartans of Red team were liberating the Covenant from Pirth, or atleast doing their best. But they were vastly outnumbered.

"Where the hell is Blue team!" Douglas shouted, firing more rounds from his MA5B.

"We can't hold out here forever, we have to pull back!" Alice insisted, slipping one of her last remaining clips into her M7.

"Screw this! I'm not a damn Spartan!" one of the marines holding the line said, then retreated. The marines of Fox company had been ordered to accompany the Spartans. More than half of those marines were now dead. Jerome couldn't blame the soldier, he was right. He wasn't a Spartan. Not like he, Alice, or Douglas. Still, he admired the few marines who actually stayed put; they were being asked for way more than they could handle.

Overhead, a Pelican soared above the streets, then hovered for a moment. Red team watched as ODSTs were repelled from the Pelican and onto the rooftops. They took up positions on the building ledges, firing into the crowds of Covenant swarming the streets. Red team took this as an oppurotunity to remove themselves from cover, and fire at the alien bastards. One by one, the Covenant fell, clearing the street.

"Red team, this is Blue team, do you read? Over." Spartan 117 said over comm.

"Acknowledged, Blue team, what's your postion? Over." Jerome answered.

"About... two clicks south of your position. We're holding up in a temporary base of operations. Over."

"Affirmitive, we're on our way. Out." Red team leader confirmed, closing the the comm channel. "All right, you heard John, let's move."

"Yes sir." Douglas and Alison answered, turning south down the street, hitting a full sprint. Jerome followed.

Just like old times, he thought.

I don't have a lot of time, and I only read the first post, but I thought it was quite good. Reminded me a bit of my own writing at some points, haha. I think you captured humans very well, especially the parts you wrote about 117 and 087 regarding the child. The only revision suggestion I can give is to just keep adding more and more detail. And one editorial suggestion is that the last sentence in the first paragraph might contain a comma splice, though I'm not sure. Oh, and I thought the last paragraph was the icing on the cake, so to speak - very captivating.

Episode One: Arcadia - Part Three - New Orders

John 117 awaited the arrival of Red team. He had been holding up in a base of operations with his own team of Spartans, complemented by nearly two other company's of marines.

"Sir?" a marine asked the tall Spartan. John looked at him in response. "Colonel Sanders wants to see you and your team... I think it's important..." he studdered nervously. The marine had obviously never seen a Spartan before.

"Understood, thank you private." the Spartan said, then nodded his head once, leaving to gather the rest of his team.

The Spartan didn't know what orders he was going to recieve... and after he recieved them, he'd wished he'd never had...

- - -

Blue team waited in the debriefing room for Colonel Sanders. Within a few moments of waiting, the Colonel walked into the room, cirlces underneath his eyes. It was obvious he hadn't been sleeping very much these past few days... no marine had been.

The Spartans stood straghter, and gave a well-rehearsed salute.

"At ease." the Colonel soothed. Behind Blue team, a door opened. John turned to look who was enterikng the room, only to see three other Spartans. Red team. "Ah, good, you're here. Now we can get to business."

"Nice to see you," John whispered to Jerome over comm.

"Likewise." Red team leader replied.

"As you know, the Greenhouse had been escorted to Arcadia with the UNSC fleet," Sanders began. "We had been planning to dump the civilians onto the planet... but with the Covenant invasion, that's not likely to happen anymore. Anyhow, our concerns go beyond that."

Through Kelly's visor, her jaw tightened. No one was able to notice it behind her reflective mirror, but her brow was creased in worry and dismay.

"We've just recieved reports and distress calls from the Greenhouse. Apparently, the ship had been destroyed by a Covenant arma-"

"Any survivors?" Kelly asked, interrupting the Colonel. John looked at her immidiately, frustrated.

"Y-yes, a few life pods managed to get away..." Sanders responded, awkwardly. Technically, he was a higher rank than her, and didn't need to answer. But as far as reputation goes, he might as well been a private. "That's where you come in... they dropped a little ways outside of Pirth about thirty minutes ago. I want two Spartans to go and aid a handful of marines in retreiving the survivors."

"I volunteer." Kelly said. John wasn't sure if he wanted Kelly on this mission... personal feelings could get in the way. It was obvious the female Spartan was concerned about Mia.

"I'll go." John said. After all, he had to keep Kelly in check. "Kurt, Linda, Fred? You're with Red team until I get back."

"Yes sir." the Spartans nodded.

"When do we depart?" Kelly asked, tring to hide her anxiety.

"Immidiately, you need to report at the garage. The marines'll be there waiting for you, along with a few Warthogs." the Colonel answered.

"Acknowledged." Kelly said, saluting, then hastily making her way out of the room. Sanders looked towards John.

"Is she always this eager?" he asked. John looked back at him, then pondered on the question. Finally, he answered:

"She has a reason to be."

Episode One: Arcadia - Part Four - Mia

"Your excellency?" a Deacon asked, fearfully inching his way towards the Sangheili Fleet Master, V'rut. The Zealot was known for his easily triggered temper, and usually took it out amongst the pathetic Unggoy.

"What, whelp?" V'rut asked harshly. "This had better be important."

"Y-yes, your excellency!" the Deacon assured. "Our, uh, our ground forces have detected human escape vessels on the planet... undoubtedly ones from the civilian ship we destroyed,"

"Hmm... I see. And why are the lives of these pathetic humans of valuable information to me?" the Sangheili asked, irritated.

"Not the humans themselves, your excellency, but what are set out to aid them. The humans in the green armor."

"The Demons?" V'rut asked, eyes widening. "You are sure?"

"Yes, our scouts reported that they were on their way to secure the humans who escaped."

"Excellent news!" V'rut shouted, standing out of his chair which overlooked the Bloodlust's bridge. "Thank you, Unggoy, you may be on your way now."

"Ye-yes your excellency! Thank you, your excellency!" the Deacon repeated. V'rut was in an awfully curtious mood, which was odd. Of course, he had a reason to be. Long ago, towards the beginning of this war, one of those... Demons slaughtered his offspring. Ever since, V'rut vowed to get revenge. The Demons would die by his hand, if by any.

"Xoron! You're in charge until I return." V'rut stated, walking out of the bridge.

All I need is to assemble my team... and those Demons will perish...

- - -

"How much longer?" Kelly asked, changing her position in the Warthog's side seat.

"Not much..." John replied, then fixed his gaze away from the dashboard and onto her. "Kelly... I know how much Mia means to you, but remember: you're a Spartan. Your mission comes first."

Kelly stared at him for a full five seconds before responding. "Yes sir." she said, coldly.

"There they are!" the gunner of the Warthog said, pointing ahead. In the distance, the Spartans could see the masses of civilians from the Greenhouse, along with some drop pods which were burried in the ground. They resided in a thick forrest, trees torn and splintered from the impact of the life pods. Kelly could see Mia in the distance, and a smile immidiately stretched across her lips.

"See?" John said. "They're fine." But he spoke to soon. No sooner than a second after the statement, the civilians were enveloped in a green explosion, hurled into the air.

"NO!" Kelly screamed. Oh, god... not Mia... Please, not Mia...

- - -

V'rut complemented the Banshees on their precise shot, then jumped out of a Phantom which descended below the civilians with the rest of his team of Sangheili Commandos. Only a few humans remained alive, but they could easily be killed. In the distance, he spotted the convoy of Warthogs, as they started firing their turrets into his troops. The Sangheili reacted by firing their plasma rifles.

V'rut watched, arms folded, trying to spot one of the Demons. Two caught his eye, both in the front seat of the Human vehicles.

"Splendid." he whispered to himself, about to advance. That is, until he heard a faint whimpering from one of the drop pods. More out of curiousity than bloodlust, the Zealot went to investigate. The Demons will die soon enough, anyhow, he thought, pulling into the pod. It took his eyes a moment to adjust as he looked into the dark vessel, but once he spotted what was making the noise, he grinned.

A human child.

She whimpered, and backed away towards the end of the pod until she could go no more. The Sangheili struggled to fit through the tight door, then started to slowly walk towards her.

"Yes..." V'rut said, grabbing the child with one arm, then lifting her up so he could get a better view. "Perfect..."

The child kicked and screamed, eyes full of tears.

"Squirming will do you no good, little one." he said, knowing the child couldn't understand. "How ironic I find a human child after what your bastard race did to my children." he contemplated. "Yes... you will do just fine, but I will not kill you. No, I will do far worse than that. I will have my revenge." V'rut concluded, placing the child over his shoudler, then exiting the vessel.

- - -

Kelly spotted the golden armored Elite carrying Mia, then lept out of the Warthog.

"Spartan! Do not engage, that is an order!" John yelled. Kelly made no response, just kept sprinting towards the Elite. Towards Mia.

- - -

V'rut watched as the Demon ran towards him. It's feminine body was still nearly fifty meters away, not to mention the Sangheili Commandos who sperated the two. For a moment, he was paralyzed by fear. Then, by excitement.

"Let her go!" he heard the Demon yell through his translators.

Ah, he thought. So this child is of some significance to the Demon? At that moment, a plan hatched in V'rut's head. A plan more pheesable than killing the Demon. Making her suffer.

"That is not likely to happen." V'rut whispered to himself. The Demon tried to run between the Commandos, but was forced to stop once their rifles were leveled on her.

"Stand down." one of the Sangheili said. "Drop your weapon." The Demon did as told, then got to her knees. V'rut came within five feet of her.

"This child means something to you?" he asked, holding the fragile human by the collar of her shirt.

"Yes..." Kelly moaned, "please, don't hurt her. I beg of you." she whispered.

"Your kind murdered my children!" V'rut shouted, losing his easily lost temper. "This one will die. And you will be alive to recieve the body bag I send her to you in."

the Demon charged V'rut in rage, but the Commandos restrained her.

"Let her live." V'rut said. "She will suffer just as I did. Just as I still am." That being said, the Commandos spat on the Demon, kicked her in her side, then went back to the Phantom.

- - -

Kelly watched in horror as the Elites took Mia into the Phantom, then flew away. Moments later, the Warthogs finally made it to her location. John pulled by her side.

"God damn it Kelly!" he shouted. "You're a Spartan! Act like it, soldier!"

Kelly didn't care about acting like a Spartan. All she cared about was Mia, and one way or another, she was going to get her back.

Episode One: Arcadia - Part Five - A New Assignment

Jerome fired off a few more shots before retreating.

"Alice, Douglas, fall back! We're losing this fight... we can't hold Pirth."

The two Spartans nodded at their leaders command, following him as he lead the way towards a convoy of UNSC soldiers that were evacuating the huge city.

"Blue team, this is Red team, do you read?" Jerome asked.

"Copy, Red team. What's your status? Over." John replied.

"We've lost Pirth, we have new orders. Repeat, new orders. We're evacuating. Over.

"Acknowledged, new destination?" the Spartan asked.

"We're retreating five klicks south, into the outskirts. Hopefully, we can hold up long enough for Spirit of Fire to evac us. Over."

"Rodger that, on our way. Out."

- - -

John turned to Kelly.

"Are you alright?" he asked. Kelly let out a sob, mixed with a laugh. He could easily tell losing Mia would have a permanent effect on her-- hopefully, she would still be able to fight. John cleared his throat awkwardly; this had been the first time he'd ever seen another Spartan shed tears before.

"I'll be okay." she replied.

John went to Kelly's side, resting his hand on her shoulder.

"Don't worry, Kelly. We'll get Mia back." he soothed. Kelly took a second to reply, then nodded her head in understanding.

"Blue team, do you read? Over." an unfamiliar voice crackled over COM.

"Affirmitive. Who is this?" John answered.

"Pilot Scott Dredfield at your service, sir. I've gotta bird on the way to your location-- in fact, I see you now."

John looked in the distance, only to spot a Pelican flying his way.

"Where might you be taking us?" John questioned.

"You've got new orders. You and your team are to be extracted from Arcadia at once-- UNSC needs you elsewhere. I'll get specific on the details later."

"What about the rest of my team?"

"You mean they ain't with ya?" the Pilot asked, confused.

"No, they're with Red team at Pirth. Do we pick them up?"

"Negative, zone's too hot. You are to be transfered to the UNSC corvette, Paper Beats Rock, immidiately."

John sighed. He didn't like the idea of leaving his team behind, nor Red team. But orders were orders, and he had to follow them. He didn't question, he executed. "Understood." The Pelican touched down in front of the two Spartans, and John stepped in, Kelly following slugglishly after him. The bird took off once more, and John watched as the civilians and marines were reduced to ants. The hatch closed as they entered space, well on their way to the corvette.

"At ease, Spartans." Captain Welder said. The Spartans did as they were asked, putting their hands to their sides. Welder inspected the Spartans a full ten seconds before the John spoke up.

"Sir? What is this about?" he asked, getting straight to the point. The Spartan leader had heard about Captain Welder before; he ran the top-of-the-class missions with his top-of-the-class corvette. The Paper Beats Rock was an infamous ship, renknown for its incredible speed, and inhanced Shaw-Fujikawa drive. It wasn't the biggest ship in the UNSC, but, then again, no corvettes were.

"I've got an important mission for you," the Captain replied. "No doubt you've heard of ambassador Maeng?"

"Of course." John replied almost instantly. Ambassador Maeng was the most known ambassador in all of the colonies, and she had reason to be.

"The UNSC has decided to focus their main attention towards the Insurrection. For now, atleast. We all know the real threat is the Covenant, but we can't win a two way fight. Not if the Innies won't cooperate with us." the Captain sighed, calling the Inssurectionists by their nick-names. No UNSC soldier particularly liked the idea of siding with the Innies, but humanity wouldn't survive unless they acted as one.

"Where does the Ambassador come into play with this?" Kelly asked, arms folded. She had started to recover, John had noticed. Kelly was, after all, a Spartan.

"You two are going to be escorting Ambassador Maeng to the Eridanus system-- Innie territory. There, we have arranged a meeting with one of their leaders-- General Rudolf."

John's heart stopped.

"Rudolf, sir?" John asked, blinking.

"Yes, Spartan. The same Rudolf you failed to capture on Operation: SLINGSHOT." Welder said harshly. "If the General fails to sign the peace treaty... you two kill him. I know it isn't very honorable, but honor be damned in our state. Killing Rudolf will seriously cripple the Innies, possibly making them surrender. Am I clear?"

"Yes sir." the Spartans said in unison.

"Good, you leave tomorrow. Dismissed."

Kelly followed John as they left the debreifing room. On their way out, they ran into Ambassador Maeng who had been waiting outside.

"You two are my escorts, are you not?" she said. Maeng wore a long, silky gown, complemented with Chinese design. Her asian features smiled through her makeup, and her long, dark hair hold into a bun between two sticks.

"Yes ma'am. Glad to have you." John said, nodding.

"No, the pleasure is all mine." Maeng curtsied. "I look forward to our little adventure. Rest well, Spartans." That being said, the Ambassador smiled, then walked passed them to her quarters.

Kelly was uneasily silent.

"Are you all right?" John asked.

"Fine. I need to get to the armory; take off this armor." Kelly said, and without another word, spun on her heel towards her destination. John contimplated for a few moments, worried about his team. He hoped they were safe aboard the Spirit of Fire. Once his head was cleared off all thoughts, he followed Kelly to the armory, then got some well-deserved sleep.

Honor Light Your Way, Our Blood Shall Forge A Thousand Generations!.

Episode Two: Lost In Space - Part One - Attacked

John walked onto the bridge, clad in his green armor. His gold-mirrored visor turned towards Kelly, and gave a curt nod. She nodded back. Then, they both turned towards Captain Welder as he presented himself.

"Good morning, Spartans. I trust you slept well?" The question was retorical, and John didn't answer. "Right. Down to business. Ambassador Maeng should be here any minute-- ah, here she is now."

The Spartans turned toward Maeng as she bowed her respects.

"Hello, Spartans. Captain."

"Ma'am." John replied, nodding.

"Here's the deal, we're about thrirty minutes out until we reach General Rudolf. From here, you'll be taking the Longsword we have in the hangar."

The Spartan Leader blinked. Most Corvette's didn't have the space to hold Longsword fighters, but this wasn't like most Corvette's, John reminded himself.

"Yes sir. When are we moving out?"

"Immidiately, all that's left to do is go to the hang--"

"Sir?" an Ensign on the bridge called from his post. Welder turned to him with a sigh.

"Yes?"

"A ship is hailing us, Captain." he reported.

Welder bit his lip. "Patch them through."

The Ensign nodded, and pushed a few commands on his keyboard. Within a second, a video feed was being broadcasted on the main screen. John recognized the face immidiately. General Rudolf.

"Rudolf? What is the meaning of this?" Welder asked, irritated.

"Hello, Captain." Rudolf said in a miniacle way. "I trust you are doing well?"

The question caught Welder off guard. "Yes, I suppose... why have you contacted us?"

"Maybe I just wanted to say hi?" Rudolf laughed.

"We both no that isn't the reason." replied Welder.

"No. It is not. In fact..." Rudolf paused, then put on a wicked grin. "I wanted to say bye."

Welder's eyes widened as the ship shook from a distant explosion. The video feed was cut off, as Welder swore.

"Status report!" he yelled.

"Sir! We just lost out engine coolers... thrusters have been hit, severe damage." reported a bridge crew.

"Damn it! What hit us?"

"Sir... long range slug. Undoubtedly from the Innies. Orders?"

Welder thaught a moment, then replied, "Use our remaining emergency power to get the hell out of here. On the double."

Without another word, the Ensign punched in new orders. Shortly afterward, ODSTs poured into the bridge.

That's right, John thought, Paper Beats Rock has its own squad of ODSTs.

"Sir? What the hell just happened?" the ODST Commanding Officer asked.

"The damned Innies tricked us, that's what happened." Welder said, furious.

"Sir! The Innies are sending a ship after us! They're planning to board us, sir!" an Ensign shouted, leaping out of his seat.

"Bastards! Spartans, get to the Hangar, double time. That's where they'll come from." Welder ordered, turning to the green giants. Then, to the ODST CO, Campbell, "You and your ODSTs back him up, do not let the Innies take this ship!"

The Spartans nodded, and ran for the Hangar. The Helljumpers struggled to keep up, as they followed.

John assessed the situation. Their ship was crippled, they had an Ambassador aboard, and the Innies were going to do anything in their power to blow them to hell.

The Spartan Leader smiled. He liked a challenge.

Nice job, and your book cover makes me jealous. Why is it so good? It makes me and my Memoirs cover embarrassed.

Hmm, this calls for an epic super 'leet' Insurrection cover!

Good part.
