I've heard people talking about the pelican being added to the Halo:Reach multiplayer.

The idea is great and it has potential...but I have two problems.

1. Betrayal

You and several other people hop into the pelican and the pilot decides to be a -blam!- and crash the pelican causing everybody inside to die in a firery explosion as soon as the match starts leaving your team without a pelican!

2. Splatters

This would be a problem. It would be very frustrating if you have pelicans divebombing at other players for a cheap kill.

I still think it would be awsome if the players inside the pelican could control the back hatch. Imagine a pelican crash landing causing the pilot and copilot to be killed but the 5-6 players in the back open up the hatch unleashing ownage! :P

it would be cool when you land at high speed like crash lad if the front of it slowly goes and digs into the gound slowing it

As much as I would love to see it, that kind of player distribution power (practically the whole team being dropped into a place at once?) would only be viable if there was a larger amount of players for the teams, or conversely, for one sided games, where the defense has access to anti-pelican weapons (whatever these may be...)

Bringing coherent and well-thought-out replies to the Bungie forums since... a while.

The issue is that you could pretty much fit your whole team into one and a bit Pelicans. And, no map is large enough to need a Pelican transport. Also, consider Valhalla, and the opponents having the Missile Por right off the bat, and just a short jump to the Splazer. Once you've got a few troops in the Pelican, take off, you get blasted out of the sky.

Another problem; what's the point of isolating half your team from the game, and making their shelter extremely obvious. Some sort of hovercraft-type skiff would be better, with a pilot and three firing platforms, or something.

Pelicans sound good on paper, but that is about it. In the current format of FPS there is no place for something big. Think about it now, it is roughly the size of an Elephant (albiet different dimensions) and you'd have to fly that thing around. Unless the map sizes were increased exponentially and the player matches were beefed to like 12v12 there is no practical application for a Pelican.

Given the current state of the internet increasing the scale of the game to allow for Pelicans is a bad idea as well. BTB still lags with only a limited amount of players, making it bigger will not make it better.

It's not an internet issue, its a console hardware issue. FPS games with up to 64 players are possible and work well, but there has to be better hardware available to host the game. I think pelicans in the game would work great if they could get the larger teams to work more efficiently

I'm one with the warrior inside. The evidence can't be denied. The entire world will stare. Into this battlefield tonight. As I stand before you with a warrior's heart now. I can feel the strength that will Ensure my victory this time

No player would be at risk while in a Pelican. That is if the driver is skilled. Also, the Pelican has twin 50 milimeter chain guns and missiles. It would be beast!

My name is from Star Wars. Now you know.

Feel free to follow me on my twitter and stalk me.

What you described at the end was pure epicness.

The only toher problem would be one BR shot could bring a Pelican down. XD

Allow me to clairfy, it is an XBL issue, as the consoles ability to physically host the game has little to do with the poor bandwidth performance. Now there certainly is a little to be said about the netcode used for Halo3, but the bulk of the issue is XBL. You cannot compare what PC games have done considering most of them use servers and have a much smaller player base.

Tank beats everything!

Visit my youtube channel for Vehicular awesomeness!

If there is any game developer that could balance a mass transport dropship for gameplay, it is Bungie.
