Just enjoy the damn game!
Who cares about BR vs AR
Ah, sorry if I came over a little aggressive there.
The point I am trying to make goes a little like this...
In RPG's you design a character, can choose looks, and the attributes each character has. This is a very enjoyable experience, and often, I spend most of my time doing this, trying to create the perfect character, rather than playing the game. Once you are done with the character creation part, you then proceed to the playing, where you can choose what you want to do, when you want. I will use Oblivion as an example.
In Oblivion, there are many side quests to do, the Arena, Mages, Fighters, Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guilds just to name a few. Often, you can choose to ignore the main quest entirely, and just focus on the one that seems most interesting to you.
However, in Halo, you have no choice when you do things. Only when you have completed the game can you go back and do levels, but they are already completed. There are no side quests in Halo. You can't see a massive pack of Brutes blocking your path and decide, right, I'll go and complete the sniping side quest. You have no option. Even if you say that Halo has massive maps on which the campaign is based, you can't deny the game is linear. You may have many paths to choose, but all eventually lead to the next batch of enemies.
So I put it to you, what is an RGP game without any freedom? Yes, you do play a role, and you become the character, but you don't have any choices that are made by you, and you alone. Therefore, the only choice you have in the game is character creation. And if you create characters, then follow a linear path... you end up with a class-based game, which a lot of people do not want to see.
Sorry about the wall of text...XD
