I'd like there to be a myriad of ways to take something out. So far in Halo (and probably most video games), there are only two options: dead or healthy and dangerous. Either your opponent is lively and inhindered by whatever marks you've made on it, or it's stone dead, and the game is ticking a timer to despawn the body and whatever effects related to its death.
In reality, battlefields are often searched over shortly after the battle itself is finished, because you never know when an enemy is alive. Perhaps faking, perhaps unconscious, perhaps simply so wounded they could not physically get up or attack. I'm not suggesting this be a practice -- scouring to finish off the wounded --, but it might be nice to have the option. Grunts gasping for breath from punctured methane tanks, elites attempting to die standing with broken legs. Things that would happen.
Obviously, it wouldn't be pretty to look at. But I personally am getting bored of the binary approach to combat in video games.
