I believe it has the best of the three, but I want to hear what you think.

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

Of course it does. It was and still is epic. No stupid glitches (for the most part), You against the world. Altogether it was an amazing game. And in a way very emotional for me (not the crying kind). It marked the beginning of a new way of games as well as the Star Wars of our day. Me and my dad still play co-op whenever we can. Halo: CE will always be my most prized game. It is still in almost perfect condition. Even after my Halo 3 copy already broke.

Took the words out of my mouth (hands, even? :P).

Halo: CE was the best thing to happen to gaming at the time. Brilliant, original storyline, magnificent visuals, very fun gameplay, challenging Campaign, fun multiplayer and very little flaws in general. I think they ruined the sequels by focusing on making them "epic". Flying around in a Hornet and taking down two Scarabs at a time can get repetitive and boring very quickly. In Combat Evolved, it takes a brain to complete the game on Legendary. Hopefully, ODST will be even better than its predecessors.

While I personally like Halo 2's campaign more, I think Halo 1 & 2 were equally, the best of the halo series.

Halo 1 has challenging physic's, and a solid difficulty, I find fall damage, and the health bar to be annoying, but I love the environments, and the epic moments of stealth/sniping your way to victory.

Halo 2, while including some elements, a couple of weapons, and other things originally supposed to be in halo 1, is in fact, a great game, if you look past the presentation, and look at the meaning, and feel bungie introduced, the elite dialogue for example, while not as cool as before, gave the elites personality, and made them more complex then before.

And while story has some epic parts, it was, in fact quite sad, and the music and ambience enhanced the atmosphere of the game.

So, in conclusion, halo 1 & halo 2 are completely different games, halo 1 is a epic, continuos struggle against a losing battle for survival, halo 2, is, simply a journey with two perspectives, one, a human, doing what he deems to be right and logical. And the other, a alien, that is constantly struggling to believe a faith, in which he knows to be flawed, but is unable easily break free of his own delusian.

Halo 3, on the other hand, IMO, is a shiny, average game that warped everything halo 2 brought, for a epic, blaze of glory to end the halo story with a halo 1 feel.

(1) Don't give up on love itself...

(2) As you achieve victory, suck the live out of your enemies!

(3) Never BS a BSer.

It does. There's a lot of mystery in it. And you always find something new and cool when you play!

yes only cuz it was the epic "first" of the haloverse

They failed in this, sadly.

Halo CE was and is still the Best!
It was my first Game and i still have Halo CE on PC and Xbox just cause im a Fan of the First one. the Campaign was in the Start Interesting after that it started to be Creepy and Dark theme with the best Background Music, and the End was great i was like, "Oh my God! let's get the -blam!- out of here!" all in all Halo CE cant be beaten by the other two Games. the Music is Original and i still like to listen to the Monk theme in the Menu :-)

Halo 2 PC/Xbox was a big Fail, so many Bugs, so many glitches, and the Campaign was not Epic enough and mystery than Halo CE.

Halo 3 i never played but i know there are many Kids below 16.

They made it look very pretty, with many bright lights flashing in your eyes. Not much replay value once you've gotten Achievements and tried the Skulls. And this is coming from someone who still believes Campaign should be the primary focus of games.

I wouldn't say Halo 2 xbox was a complete fail, granted that roughly 50% of content that bungie wanted to put in halo 2 was achieved, as opposed to Halo CE, which had roughly 85% of the content bungie intended to put in halo ce.

Still, despite being glitchy, halo 2 has incredible music, ambience, and some mystery if you pay attention to the story, I agree the ending is crap, compared to the halo ce ending, despite the other negatives in halo 2, I find the story, music, and the lack of barriers to enhance gameplay.

However, I agree halo 2 vista was a failure, it was poorly implemented, with no one caring for it, besides that hackers continue to screw up halo 2 vista online, it will always be a shadow, compared to halo 2 for xbox.

Good points there, Kasith.
As a campaign-only Xbox guy, I still feel 2 is the best. But it's only so because CE laid the foundation in every way. CE was exploratory, 2 was expository. You got to learn things about the Covenant, so many things were added to the basic gameplay without subtracting. But it gets to be a little chicken and egg when comparing one to the other. I wish 3 were deeper, but it offers so much (saved films, workable skulls), I can't say a bad thing about it.
Is funny, because, people will always wish something was 'more like the old one,' but, if that's the case, they complain that it's 'little more than a rehash...where are the innovations...' There's no winning.
The one thing CE has over the others (for me anyway) is, I feel like I'm really "there." The others somehow feel like you're playing a game.

I do agree, Nesteggfailure, most of the halo ce levels gave me the feeling like im actually their. (T&R and Two Betrayels are both, incredible classics, as they, IMO, had the best ambience in halo ce)

The only level in halo 2 that I see as having a feeling, similar to the level, Two Betrayels, was Sacred Icon, it may be an Arbiter level, but that one level, though somewhat short, has the best ambience IMO, that really draws me into the game, especially the beginning and middle of it.

However, once you exit the Infected Sentinel wall, and into the quarantine zone, then it turns into a game, as you fight alongside elites against the surrounding flood, it's still good and intense gameplay with a great atmosphere, but that incredible ambience that I felt in earlier in the Sentinel Wall, is lost.

Anyway, Halo 1 & Halo 2 forever.

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.
(Proud LONGTIME owner of the PC and Xbox versions of Halo CE)

Halo CE not only had he best campaign of the three, but the best multiplayer as well!

  • 09.06.2009 2:21 PM PDT

I have to agree with nestegg Kasith on the ambience. In Halo: CE, I almost always felt like I was part of the battle, instead of playing a game. In Halo 2 and Halo 3, there's virtually none of that. I admit, the Sentinel Wall had great atmosphere, and it brought back part of the feeling of 343 Guilty Spark, but the Sentinels, and the fact that the Marines I heard were technically my enemies, constantly interrupted the feeling.

I've always described CE as an 'RPG/sandbox masquerading as a shooter.' Is funny, because even though I'm a huge Arbiter fan, I could never care about him that much. With Chief, it's like, "I can do this, I can play this role..." Getting killed is a burn. But when I die playing as Arbiter, it's like, "Eh. Got killed. Back to the checkpoint."

  • 09.06.2009 5:28 PM PDT

Exactly. It's the "feel" and immersion.

Livin' in an igloo and riding my pet polar bear. I am Canadian.

I agree with you, but I find Halo 3 to be quite close in following. Though the common opinion is negative, people fail to see the fun in finally, in contrast to halo 1 in which you are prey, taking the fight to the enemy. The large-scale battles are also done very well, and IMO the multi-scarab battle is actually pretty fun if you get creative since you can do it so many ways (like dropping out of the hornet killing the first scarab & jacking a vechicle over to the other). Halo 3 didn't get everything right, but every battle can be accessed so many ways it keeps be going. Plus it has LIVE co-op. But most importantly, the campaign goes out with, rather than a bang, a sense of peace. That made the game for me

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

I agree, Halo3 was so. . .plain feeling to me. Then again even Halo2 had a weak campaign offering IMO. I liked the addition of the Arbiter story, but it just seemed like a late addition that was not fully fleshed out.

CE's campaign did everything right, and that is a rare thing. It had great gameplay, great implements, solid scripting, solid enemy AI, great level design and proper pacing. I actually cared about what was going on in CE, Halo2 and 3 just felt like I was trudging along to the finish.

Exactly. It's the "feel" and immersion.

There was a lot of quiet time in the game. Which isn't a bad thing; you're really thinking about what's going on, even as you play. Chief only speaks when absolutely necessary, and the cutscenes were limited. So, your actions seemed to equal the story more than anything else. Comparing notes with someone else felt kind of weird back then.

Everytime I'm waiting for Halo3 to load, I always start thinking about Halo CE levels. Halo CE's Pistol FTW

No doubt about it. Halo 1 has the greatest campaign of any game I have ever played.

For the 3? Yes. For the 3+ODST? No.

My thoughts...

  • 09.26.2009 12:01 PM PDT

"And my army of brothers went over the hilltops, drenched in blood we may be... but fighting is all left to me... Together with my army of brothers... down we fall... darkness in all... through hell!"

Nothing shall beat Going into The Truth And Reconciliation, navigating through alien corridors, Driving on the beaches of the Cartographer, Assaulting the Control Room, Discovering the Flood, Killing your old Friend, Driving through Hell's corridors, then Blowing up the Ancient Ring. Nothing.
