Halo 3's Forge is great, but it simply cannot compare to the scope and abilities of a map editor like Far Cry 2's. It is clear that many, many people in Halo 3 were disappointed with the restrictions placed on them through Forge, and wished for a greater budget, larger space, longer list of items, etc. In short, they wanted more of everything...

That is exactly what Far Cry 2's editor offered. You could build a map on a slate larger than Blood Gulch, the budget was practically limitless, there was automatic interlocking and geomerging, and much more. The only thing Far Cry 2 didn't have was the charm and relayability of Halo 3.

Which is why I think Halo: Reach players deserve something as free-ranging as that editor, to truly realise the incredible maps that they have created in the limited space and budget of Foundry and Sandbox.

What do you think? Please vote and reply IF you have used the Far Cry 2 editor.

No matter how many times I forget about this place, I always get dragged back.

I'm more than okay with that.

Yes, but let there be a toggle option for a simple or advanced editor. Advanced would basically give you the dev tools (not exactly the dev tools, of course) to build whatever you could dream up. A simplified editor would be like a more advanced Forge, allowing you to build maps from scratch with a basic environment palette (Jungle, Desert, Forerunner, to name a few).

Even if it was on a second disk it would be worth it. Imagine some of those maps with Halo gameplay! It brings a tear to my eye...

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

I would enjoy a map creator like that.

halo is M$'s money maker and biggest and most famous franchise. every person that has an xbox have AT LEAST played a halo game in their life, and 90% probably own one.
so they make map packs and force you to buy it by reducing the amount of playlists you can go in without these maps.
you buys maps with microsoft points, that you have to buy.

now if you give us a way to make maps ourselves, then nobody is going to buy the maps anymore. if they dare make us pay for content we can make ourselves, then people will play custom for free. 90% of players would not buy the maps anymore, they'd make less money.

that's why forge is so badly limited. that's why we'll never ever EVER have a map editor of ANY kind in a halo game. I'd bet my nuts on it without a doubt.

Yes but basic forge should stay too. Some people just won't be able to use the more complicated map editor.

let's see : 10$ (800MSP) per map packs... on halo 3, there was 3 map packs... so they got 30$ per users (if you bought all map packs). that makes 2400MSP.

so if they indeed make us BUY it, it'll be at very minimum 1200MSP but probably more.
that's assuming they'd ever release such a thing, which is unlikely...

That's a very pessimistic way of looking at it. In my mind, I always thought Bungie made the games (I know MS owns the IP). Bungie created Forge very brilliantly. They knew a complicated map editor wouldn't be vey popular (as the little kids wouldn't know what to do, and their ADD would kick in and they'd do something else), so they made a system that is easy to use and works well with all age groups.

The experienced forgers are crying for a more advanced forge system, but Bungie can't deliver because they are trying to cater to the more casual gamer. However, I do like the system of a simple and a complicated forge tool, but that would cut time from other aspecs of the game. All in all, I like our current system (maybe Bungie could make it a bit more helpful, but not as complicated as Far Cry). There, I just flipped your argument into pure optmism. :)

I like seeing what people can make in forge. Its limited, but not in a bad way.

  • 08.30.2009 5:55 PM PDT

Possibly a new forge-like map editor. I'v seen a thread on the forums that called it ARCHITECT, so lets call it that.

With Architect you would first create a flat plain, which would be your area to work with. It could operate like the FarCry 2 map editor (I'v used its basics). Once you built the basic geomatry of your map, you could then go into forge (hopefully an upgraded version) and add that personal touch with items and weapons.

Are You Serious?

While I don't think that forge was great, because anything good that came out of it, wasn't really intended (my personal belief), but yes, a Far Cry 2 Style map editor would be amazing. Definitely a huge step up from the rag-tag forge Halo 3 has now.

(Once again, not -blam!- on forge, it's still pretty cool, even if many of it's uses were or were not intended.)

The poll seems positive, but the replies seem to be more "maybe"s. Keep it up, guys!

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I really think it should be more like Doom Builder
