Hi guys,
'Tis I Kalriq, harbinger of the kittens, back to unveil something new.
The controversial topic of space battles.

So, I know as a fact that alot of people want them, alot of people don't and some are just plain confuzzled. Me, I'd like to see something new like this to spice things up a little, now before you all shoot this down here's my way of getting things across.

First of all, game size.
We have seen a plenty of games over the years with different multiplayer server sizes, from 2 to 64 or even more, now I know you will say lag, or server trouble, but nay, Counterstrike got round this, Section 8 has, so I think that Bungie will have some way, even just upping us to 32, would be fine for this. As long as this plan had larger scaled battles, it would work.

Secondly, game play.
Players would choose which class/section they were in.
It would be most effective with large games, this is due to the scale of the combat.
There would be three groups of players withing a team.
Five Bridge crew.

The Bridge crew would be made up of the captain who will coodinate everything through setting waypoints for specific players and squads/flights. The navigator would be responsible for steering your flagship and lining up for MAC/heavy plasma weaponry shots. The weapons officer would select targets for the ship weapons and deal with them, while also talking to the navigator for MAC shots, the spotter would be incharge of all the telescopes, probes and camera's for finding enemy positions and keeping tabs on them. Finally the ship schematics officer would be in total control of which sections of the ship to seal off due to damage, where to cut oxygen, where to cut power from and generally keep everyone else up to date on what the ships damage reports and satus is.
The pilots would fly Longsword interceptors, Pelicans and other adapted vehicles for space combat. They would also fly in landing crafts and do EVA ship repairs.
The marines would be for boarding the enemy flagship and defending their own one, they would be equipped with full EVA kits and stripped down versions of all the weapons they pick up.
The game would be played out not far off Battlefront 2 style, however destroying key points would reap damage to the ship in more seeable ways, like destroying the reactor would totally cut their power unless they switched to backup generators at a lower energy output, or destroying the engines would beach the ship effectively.
Onboard the ships would be dictated sizewise by the numbers of players the game could support, although presumerably something similar in size to half of foundry would be a good size for good play fighting onboard.

Finally AI:
Here comes the last bit, basically ships would be given an AI, not as good as Cortana obviously, but able to repond to basic voice commands from the bridge crew, generally making life easier for them and giving advice on which enemies are nearest or saying where a good place to go to avoid fire would be.
The bridge crew could also be substituted for AI if there wasn't a volunteer for a certain role or whatever, the same applies to marines and pilots too.

Thanks for reading,
And seriously, be as constructive and critisise as much as you like as long as you give reason, but please dont say,
Oh god n0t an0v3r sp@c35hip idea.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

I got to the part where you started saying people are assigned positions, then I automatically thought, "That would fail".

No one wants to be assigned to a position, no one wants to be bridge crew, no one wants to be a marine, etc. What if all anybody wants to do is fly around a ship and kill other ships.

I am recalling a game called battlefront 2, this game had space battles and all I wanted to do was fly in a spaceship and kill other spaceships. If anyone is assigned a position, they are most likely to complain.

Space battles just wouldn't work. Maybe 343 studios will make a Halo game with space battles, but until then, I don't think Halo: Reach should have Space battles.

Oh god n0t an0v3r sp@c35hip idea.

There isn't anything wrong with the gameplay currently, and adding in complicated space battles wouldn't really work. It would require too many players to work together and know what they were doing. That's hard enough to do with 4 random players in Team Slayer....

Ok, so maybe not assigned a position, but to be honest I wouldn't mind picking being a bridge crew, just so I could pick stuff of with an MAC cannon.
But I see what you are saying in everything,
I don't really agree with no one wanting to be a marine because as soon as you are on the other teams ship you're back in the combat.
But I still think space battles would work out, especially as they do play a huge part in The Fall of Reach.
Edit:
But is that not what the Captain is for, organising the team by setting waypoints and objectives for those without mics, or just to place nav markers.

Apparently not well thought out enough. Nobody wants to play a space battle where the MAC takes ages to reload, you have extremely limited amounts of ammo, and they're assigned a crappy position. It would be incredibly slow placed. If they were to add longswords and such, that would end up far better. It would be a fast paced dog fight, instead of creeping through space with slow weapons.

I'd like to thank Daniella, my special friend, and all the people at my first group, ODSTR. May the said group dominate BUNGIE Again!

Basically you want it to be like SWBF2 with space, and ground battles?

  • 08.31.2009 12:04 PM PDT

Your idea is way too complicated for a Space Battle. All they need to do is take Star Wars Battlefront 2 and amp it up to Halo style and have Hornets, Pelicans, Longswords, Hawks(Halo wars), Phantoms, Banshees, and way more. I had a nice list of each vehicle and how they could be used back in like June but I can't find it.

Amazing how China didn't call for their wall back.

It sounds good in theory but I'm certain if it was implemented just the way you wanted the reality won't end up as epic.

Sad thing is that it's just too complicated at the moment.

Also, just one more thing. Space does not have friction. Killing the engines won't stop the forward momentum.

My Version:

First of all, game size.

Two Bridge Crew
-The Bridge crew would be made up of the navigator would be responsible for steering your flagship and lining up for MAC/heavy plasma weaponry shots, and The weapons officer who would select targets for the ship weapons and deal with them, while also talking to the navigator for MAC shots. These players are the ones who get to the wheel and weapons center first, and choose to do it.
-The pilots would fly Pelicans and other adapted vehicles for space combat. They would also fly in landing crafts and do EVA ship repairs.
-The marines would be for boarding the enemy flagship and defending their own one, they would be equipped with full EVA kits and stripped down versions of all the weapons they pick up.

Vehicles used:
Pelicans
Hornets
Hawks
Vultures (maybe)

Spirits
Banshees
Vampires
Phantoms

Ever noticed most UNSC Vehicles are animals and Covenant Vehicles are mythical names?

How's this? Worse? Better?

[Edited on 08.31.2009 1:37 PM PDT]

  • 08.31.2009 1:30 PM PDT

This was my idea for the vehicles:

NOTE: This is solely based off of vehicles we know from all current Halo games. This is also solely my opinion of what should be used in a Space Battle.

UNSC
Pelican: Transport/Gunship
Hornet- Fighter
Sparrowhawk or "Hawk"- Super Fighter
Longsword- Fighter and Bomber
Shortsword- Bomber

Covenant
Phantom- Transport/Gunship
Banshee- Fighter
Vampire- Super Fighter
Seraph- Fighter and Bomber
For the Covenant bomber I was thinking either a modified Spirit or a whole new vehicle made specifically to counter the Shortsword.

If this was to be how it would be set up, new vehicles could be put in, some vehicles switched out and also every vehicle be modified and balanced like the Longsword/Seraph being very slow but powerful and the Hawk/Vampire being very fast and strong.

I did mention Longswords and Pelicans being aof it did I not?
Whoever put in the two vehicle posts that was helpful, I know the UNSC and the Covenant had a lot of space vehicles, but knowing their names and what they are for was helpful. However I am not sure about Banshees as they are not really adapted for space battles, I'm not sure, but I think that is the case.
I think classes will definitely not be autoassigned, judging by how that went down.

but what if the captain is some moron who thinks hes funny by putting way points and ect. out in the middle of nowhere

I forsaw people questioning that, I guess that following waypoints require some degrees of common sense though.

I loved Space Battles in Star Wars Battlefront II. They would need to add them in a separate playlist and have the option to skip them in campaign though, because many people would not like them.

They'd also need to have one main ship, such as Truth and Reconciliation, or the Pillar of Autumn, where everybody starts, the vehicles are docked, and all the turrets and bridge equipment are.

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

Yes this is well thought out, but it really doesn't sound very fun. I am really for change, and new and different ideas, but this does not appeal to me at all.

  • 09.01.2009 10:30 AM PDT

though this is very well tought out there is always the problem of the assigned positions
ie: you get assigned mac cannon operator and for the next 10 mins of the game all you can hear is some little kid screaming into his mic 'thats not fair i wanted to be the mac-er guy
next situation same ten year old gets assigned as mac operator and cannot fire to save his life
next situation some other ten year old gets assigned telescopes or captine with predictable results

BUT i did think of a possible solution to all those problems when i was typing this wall
if the possitionss are assigned but are rotated on death
then it means that the best crew will stay as the crewwhat i mean is
12 players
p1=captin
p2=mac-er
p3=telescope
p4=ship defense
p5-12=marines
now p7 dies in combat
is respawned as captain
and now
p7=captain
p1=mac-er
p2=telescope
p3=ship defense
p4-6=marine
p8-12=marine
and so on
so then if a crew is realy good then they will defend their troops better or if they are not gi=ood then the troops die and the crew changes

and a suicide penalty could be that they dont become a member of crew
but that could be changed in customs

also i think that the covenant could have a modified serph or phantom to be the equivelant of a vulture which i think evens up the sides

Meh,
I'm up for something new,
This would simply be interesting and fun to play for people like me, not everyone I guess,
BUT,
I think for campaign whoever it was that said make them skipable and/or have a seperate matchmaking playlist was definitely thinking along the right lines for this type of thing.

  • 09.01.2009 12:42 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

I think Battlefront 2 handled space battles extremely well. I'm sure Bungie could borrow a few concepts from that to make them work. I'm sure that space battles would definitely spice up the game play.

  • 09.01.2009 12:43 PM PDT

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Not original, but I like the idea. Its been floating around the Forum since the Halo 2 days "We should have a gamemode in space like Battlefront 2"

Sounds interesting, but a bit complicated. As a side note, to all those people who keep saying the hornet could be used in a space battle: no, it couldn't. Go here and see for yourself. It is an atmospheric vehicle. No more, no less.

  • 09.01.2009 12:56 PM PDT

This idea is awsome, the bridge crew should have a bit of work on it though, if there was some moron who messed about, either not playing or not playing properly people should be allowed to vote kick them. Also, if people don't want to play as part of the bridge crew they should have the choice to change to a marine whilst the AI plays as the bridge crew. Would this be better?

'Tis what I thought,
BTW,
Dude with the rotating plan, the rotating crew may become a problem though for those in the bridge, as they are far less likely to die.
But I see your point, although maybe just rotating for the out of bridge positions would work, then giving players the oppertunity to switch with other players if they chose a bad one, or in the worst case scenario, a ten year old is on the MAC!

Yes,
Although as long as they had the oppertunity to switch back or switch with other players that would definitely work.
I think that apart from ship to ship would ship to Satelite or whatever work out too?
Just for a difference between one spaceship map and another.
