There have been a lot of threads about this in the Forums about Forge in Reach. I have thought about it, and came up with what I think would work extremely well.

Forge is one of the main customization modes of todays Halo 3 and I see a lot of things that are great and some that can also be improved upon.

There would be at least two types of Forge, Map Forge and Object Forge*.

Map Forge
First off this is not necessarily a Far Cry 2 map editor. It still has that Forge feel to it. You are "Forging" existing maps not completely making new ones. Although you will almost be able to create a new map.

Basically, maps will serve as different canvases for your creations. Like Foundry and Sandbox everything in the map will be Forgable, but we aren't just talking about crates and blocks, we're talking straight up pick up a building and place it elsewhere.

Buildings and bases would be composed of smaller objects, that could be grouped together into a large one.

There will hopefully be various bases to place as objects. Along with plenty of other "Intractable" Objects, (such as gates, bridges, elevators, ect.) along with corresponding "buttons."

There may also be:
-The ability to edit objects in real time (like it is now) or you could pause it and edit objects with out the interruptions.
-Items will merge with terrain automatically and stay in place when paused.
-More forms of GravLifts/Man Cannons.
-Placeable glass objects (Windows).
-Placeable Deathbarriers (Invisible barriers that you can't walk through).
-More detailed item options.
-And lastly an "undo" feature.

A copy and paste option could hopefully be put into place so that you could copy one object at a time a paste it elsewhere, hopefully also in other maps.

*There may or may not be the ability to edit objects (Object Forge).

On certain maps you would also be able to place "weather emitters" similar to Filters these objects would cause various weather conditions (Snowy, Cloudy, Rainy). Along with "weather emitters" there would be something like time controllers that would make the map day, night, or morning.

You would also be able to set a screenshot as your map's "Cover Picture."

Object Forge
We have this amazing tool called the "Forge." We all love to mess around in it and create custom content like no other. Although there is only so much customization possible with a limited number of objects. That is where the Object Forge comes in.
-Edit the size, color, shape, and texture of an object.

Size
You could edit size with a simple slider bar.
Shape
Change the shape by ether several slider bars or a pull option that allows you to contort the shape.
Color
Choose from different colors and hues.
Texture
Choose from a variety of different textures.

Details:
In the "object editor" you could make several small objects. You then use these small objects to make a larger object. You save the object. All of the objects you created in that workspace are saved as one object.

You then go into Map Forge and scroll down the list of "Custom Objects" until you find the one you made. Then you drop your object into the map.

Example:
You go into the editor and create a small base out of smaller walls, you also custom made so that they fit perfectly together. (Objects automatically merge and stay in place when they are released).

After you have created your small base you then go into Map Forge and find the item you named "Base1" you then select the object and drop it onto the normal forge just as you would now.

You could then go back into the objects menu and select your creation again. Then place it on the other side of the map. You now have two perfectly symmetrical bases.

You may also be able to customize weapons and vehicles in the Object Forge.
____________________________________________________________

Unfortunately, the 'Object Forge could be a little impossible to implement, so, back to "object editor.'

Here goes:

Instead of having more of a separate mode, the object editor would be within Forge. Pressing a certain button would take you to a white room like area, where you would put together various objects, group them, and then go back to normal Forge.

More simple, more possible, mostly the same effect.

Comment on my ideas and come up with your own. What would you like to see in the "New Forge?"

No.

I'd like things like hinges/ hydrtaulics/ motors switches for the hell of it. The possabilities are endless with those tools. Also a Weld option would be awesome. Just make it Gmod (barebones) for Halo basically. Maybe you could even pose ragdolls :P That's doubtful though.

I'd also like to be able to change the force and speed of the Mancannon/ grav lift. As well as the radius of lights, and the color of lights.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

a "glue" option, like in Little Big Planet.

When paused objects stay in place, they are "glued."

Looks like it would be hard to pull off, but it would be amazing if we had anything similar.

I'd be happy if my ideas for the Map Forge were at least considered.

Thanks. I want more of an infinite possibility thing like 'Little Big Planet' has. Far Cry 2's map editor goes over the top and has some useless features.

You could also add these objects into your fileshare and have around 100 spaces for custom objects. just a thought

No.

Yeah.. Reach does need more of a map maker than an editor. I mean, maybe it could have a farcry 2 style map maker with more emphasys on indoor maps/ building creation, and have a secondary forge mode.

The problem would be loading the maps onto other consoles. It wouldn't be automatic like Forge.

You are abusing that argument.

So.

Badly.

Anyway, here's my awesome list of ideas.

-have object library composed of only 4 geometrical primitives (cube, triangular prism, cylinder, sphere) that are relatively low-polygon so we can place many of them, as well as height maps, water, death barriers, soft ceilings, gravity lifts, etc...
-ability to edit color, texture and opacity on an object.
-ability to resize objects (x,y, and z individually)
-ability to position the x,y,z coordinates of objects
-ability to change the roll, pitch and yaw of objects
-ability to edit the last three properties of objects using a keypad type thing
-ability to create bump maps/height maps (whatever they are called)
-ability to create water
-ability to turn physics on or off for anything so we can make our own crates, barriers, etc...
-ability to cut certain geometry out of other geometry
-ability to place 'death barriers' as mentioned by Zorinth, but they should be transparent like on every other map
-ability to place customizable gravity lifts with different effects and heights/diameters
-ability to give objects basic scripting capabilities so we can make buttons, drawbridges, giant rotating things, etc...
-ability to enable/disable the more advanced options so new users aren't overwhelmed by them
-give us a completely blank map to build on. No preexisting objects at all.
-limit our maps to numbers of polygons total, not by some predetermined value
-fix the 'glitch' that causes walls to be uneven to conserve file size. Videos can be 16 megabytes easily, so why is Bungie trying to keep map sizes so low?
-allow us to have more than 100 items of user-created content
-ability to group objects together
-ability to change the weather and atmosphere of the map
-ability to copy/paste objects or groups
-ability to place soft ceilings to keep people from leaving the map
-ability to create 'zones' that give certain teams different base player traits
-allow us to place the objective objects without changing gametype
-put in as many Halo Wars vehicles in forge as you can. They'll be like the Fuel Rod Gun and Incendiary grenades.
-allow us to alter the power and abilities of vehicles. Bungie did this on Avalanche with the Transport Hornet
-more specific spawn characteristics, ie: VIP, Juggernaut spawns, etc.

I really really really like this idea. This is probably the most best explained and seemingly the easiest one to control. I propose that the "map editor" is to be changed to The Architect . To me this is a more apropiate name for it, it makes it feel more Halo/ Fourrnner/Forge feeling. There should also be a copy and paste option, a highlight area option, and the ability to have Flood weather. Basically the Flood weather would be like it is in Halo 3 Flood level on Earth (lol forgot the name). Basically that is it, very nice post.

Well thanks!

I think changing the name to "Architect" would be a little much though. It is called Forge, because you are editing maps, which is the basis for my idea.

I said that there should be a duplicate option.

A highlight area idea is good.

And lastly original maps would have themes to them, such as "Flood Ridden" maps.

But thanks again, and sorry I had to shoot down your ideas.

Yeah, that's not really Forge related.
