Wow. Played my first video game over 30 years ago. Was called "Sea Wolf," and had this periscope on the cabinet. (A huge casing that held the game screen for younger folks out there. Actual "arcade.") Very primitive stuff. Is a hoot to see things go from Atari to Intellivision to Nintendo and beyond. To be honest, I got CE for free since my wife was working for Microsoft at the time. Had no expectations, and was averse to violence. But, CE was so much of a revolution, it became far more than just a simple game. The wife has since stopped being jealous of it. Nerd boyman is simply going to spend too many hours playing it.
I remember Sea Wolf. Damn, that was a long time ago.
For me, I got my Xbox about 4 years after launch as a Christmas gift from my wife and after reading so many different stories and postings about how fun this game is, I made it my first purchase when it landed on the Platinum Hits. Even my best friend would go on and on and on about it.
First time through was pretty cool but I seemed to have had higher expectations. It wasn't until I put the game away for about 6 months and decided to give it another shot - and something just snapped. I couldn't stop playing the game.
My wife loves Quake and I tried and tried and tried to get her to try this game, but she refused because there's no "keyboard and mouse" option. I finally wore her down after a year or so. Now, together we've been playing CE for probably four or five years, beaten on every difficulty in almost every way possible. We'd sometimes spend an entire weekend playing, which usually involved mass consumption of weed.
Mmmm, good times.
