Beware the darkness....it will consume you...

And maybe stop all this constant bickering (but probably not).

A ton of people have been claiming that the planet seen in the legendary ending of H3 is Reach.
Some of these people are suggesting that MC has gone back in time.
Some are suggesting that Halo: Reach takes place AFTER H3.

Fact 1: Halo: Reach has been CONFIRMED to be a prequel.
Fact 2: The Legendary ending doesn't have to be canon (Let's not forget Halo CE)

Here is the "something else to think about" though.

Halo CE's Legendary Ending had Sgt Johnson hugging an elite. Until now, I've always thought that to just be Bungie's humor. And though it was partly their humor...we all know that Bungie is sneaky with hints and the like. I actually think that the legendary ending of Halo CE was foreshadowing that humans and the elites would be fighting side by side soon. The events of H2 led to this partnership. Bungie was giving us a hint!

What that COULD mean, is that the legendary ending of H3 is nothing more than a hint as well. They might have been hinting that their next game (after ODST of course) was going to be Reach. Halo CE foreshadowed H3, skipped H2. H3 foreshadows Reach, skips ODST.

In other words...maybe the ending isn't canon, and is rather just their clever little way of giving us a hint?

well, up until now i was debating whether the planet shown in said legendary ending is in fact reach or harvest due to Halo Wars release, then Halo Reach was announced, causing much speculation as to what that planet could be. i had multiple suggestions from friends, such as "it could be the elite homeworld, due to cortana n' cheif thinking the arbiter is dead and the ship commanders wish to go home." but your idea has become a very likely outcome. that said, it would have been nice if it was in fact harvest, and the spirit of fire does in fact survive. (mainly because that is plenty opening for a Halo 4)

Except the Spirit of Fire (which does survive, but cannot get back quickly without its FTL drive) was not at Harvest, but some other location (the Shield World) at the end of Halo Wars.

On topic, I think this idea is very plausible. However, the planet shown in the Legendary ending, while it was ambiguous enough to point towards Reach, is also very clearly not Reach. (Cortana having been there once, would know where they were - thus it wouldn't take "years" to get a distress signal out. Reach is fairly close to Earth in terms of spatial distances.) I find it likely that the cutscene is PURPOSELY ambiguous, so as to leave plenty of room for the story to be extended by 343 Industries in "Halo 4".

Also, the cutscene in Halo 2 revealed some of the themes involved in Halo 3. I think that is what the point is. To reveal some of the ideas behind the game. Halo 1 revealed that in the future Elites and Humans might get along. Halo 2 revealed the idea that Cortana would be lost to the Gravemind. Halo 3 revealed the idea the MC and Cortana are LOST IN SPACE. Where they are might not necessarily turn out to mean that much. For example, what if they get found by the UNSC in Halo 4 and are immediately taken someplace else to perform a mission. They might never even land on the planet.
