In Halo 3 the SMG, Plasma Rifle, and Spiker act pretty much the same. The Spiker would be a much more interesting dual wield weapon if the following was considered.

Split the clip size in half
Double the amount of damage per shot
Slightly lower the rate of fire
Add bonus damage on a headshot

If these ideas to change the Spiker were implemented into Halo Reach, the Spiker would have a larger skill gap and make the dual wielding aspect of Halo more versatile.

And before anyone says anything, I know that there is the possibility that dual wielding or the Spiker might not be in Halo Reach.

Or, make it a burst fire weapon, and up the damage a bit. Give it a headshot bonus, and make it non-dualwieldable.

That sounds cool, however that would be pretty similar to the Gorgon pistol from Gears of War 2.

That sounds pretty cool, however that is similar to the Gorgon pistol from Gears of War 2.

The Assault Rifle looks similar to an FN200.

And the Sniper is reminiscent of a Barret.

Similarities, they're everywhere!

Life is interesting...

SMG's are amazing against banshees.

Plasma Rifles are awesome at getting shields down, amazing when dual wielded with a mauler.

Spikers kill people very easily.

They are very, very different.

How many bullets would you want going into that burst? Because that alone could make it a very different gun than the Gears of War 2 Gorgon pistol...

Large, sharp, melted metal firing out of a gun is not unique enough?

Anyways, they might seem similar, but they're very different:
PR is good against shields
Spiker is good against flesh
SMG is good against both, but not as effective.

I would prefer an actual long rifle, something like a Carbine, that shoots spikes. But not like the Carbine exactly. Just a longer gun. And the bayonet has to stab, not slice.

True, but the basic concept of they all being rapid fire, large clip, dual wieldable guns makes you think that they could be a little bit more unique. One thing interesting about the Spiker is that it does more melee damage than the SMG or Plasma Rifle. All Brute weapons do 2 extra points of melee damage.

It wouldn't have a scope or as good of range as the BR, but it would be more powerful but have more bullet spread.

I love the Spiker as is. The only aspects I would even consider altering would be the speed of the shots fired and how much gravity has effect on them. The spikes take a long amount of time to reach their target, even in a close encounter, and the weight pulling them down does help much either. In my opinion, the Spiker would best benefit from an increase in bullet speed and a decrease in projectile weight. It would still behave the same stat wise, just be a little more versatile and useful overall.

I would be okay with that, I just don't like that the SMG, Plasma Rifle, and Spiker being nearly the same gameplay wise. The AR doesn't have any Covenant versions so it would be perfect if the Plasma Rifle became the AR counterpart like in Halo 1. Then the SMG and Spiker could happily live in their no longer over crowded realm of Fully Automatic Dual Wield guns. :)

The spiker should act like a rifle that propels spikes, not shooting spikes, if that makes sense. Slow it down, but make it strong.

Bungie could make it so that if you pulse the trigger, instead of just holding it down. That the spikes travel a little bit faster to their destination, creating a whole new skill to be able to accurately shoot far. Something like this is done for the Chopper's guns.

I like the idea and I agree when you pick up an SMG or a Spiker it just doesn't feel unique.
