Right now Halo 3 has some very wide range gaps.
You have the SMG, the Spiker, and the Plasma Rifle.
Then you have the AR.
Then you have this big gap between the AR, and the Carbine and the BR. You can fill this gap by burst firing the AR, but the gap is still significant enough to notice.
Then you have the Sniper Rifle, Beam Rifle and Spartan Laser. This level has the most significant gap in gameplay with the lower accuracy for the Carbine and BR in Halo 3 making it a chore fighting on long range maps by wasting an entire clip. The weapons are meant to ping the sniper, but this still gives the sniper enough time to dodge bullets, and dominate far too easily. It also slows down gameplay.
There are other weapons like the Rocket Launcher, Brute Shot, Sword, Mauler, Needler and Shotgun that fill the gaps between the SMG and AR and share certain ranges. Some of the weapons like the shotgun for instance are usually found in twos, but the Sword is treated as a power weapon. Sadly, the Shotgun slightly beats the Sword in range, and that is more or less a balance oversight when there are two shotguns on the map like in the Pit.
The only problem with filling these range gaps is adding original weapons without resorting to more copycat weapons. Bungie needs to find a way to add more original weapons without making another SMG or Battle Rifle clone.
