Since you can't play Halo over LAN with the same CD key I was wondering if I could buy one without going to the store and hunting down an elusive boxed game. Is this possible? Also, is there a way to turn on an internet language filter.

well.. you could buy the game online, at something like http://www.amazon.com, although there are probably many other places to get it...
and i'm not exactly sure what you mean by a language filter, but if you mean something that can translate entire webpages that are in forgin languagues, then try babblefish

By language filter I mean something that can block the insane amount of cursing on the game. And I was more interested in buying JUST a CD key rather than the box set. I thought bungie might offer that.

No such thing. Even if you downloaded something from off the internet, I doubt if it will be entirely effective.

For example: If you want to say the word b i=tch,

beyatch
b!#ch
b***h
b17ch

So a language filter wouldnt work.

Anyways, what do you need one for? No offense, but are your eyes that precious that they havent seen a curse word? Pointless, in my opinion. You just gotta take the bad with a grain of salt.

I honestly think thats a bit absurd, if you're going tot he trouble to type b i t=ch than you're mentally insane anyway and cursing is hardly the worst you can do. And while I would still prefer the filter myself, I asked especially because my little brother (13) wants to play and I'd prefer to have some way of blocking the constant streams of language. F*** you, is much preffered to the alternative, and it is rare that someone would take time to do as you said and spell out FV(K or something equally strange.

13? Unless he has led a sheltered life, he has already heard and read anything that is said online. Most of the servers I go on don't have those kinds of things said in them, and if you really want to be carefull you can only allow him to go on the COG servers which ban people for cursing.

Well, I guess I can repeat what I said in the duplicate thread you made...

You can buy a cd-key at gamespot.com. I think you get it by email or a secure site, but you also download the game. Then again, why not just grab it for $14 at WalMart? It'll probably be cheaper there then online as a download.

No filter.

In my opinion, banning someone for cussing in Halo is ridiculous. I could see if you were cussing in an online version of Checkers or something harmless. But Halo is a f'cking violent game. Uh, you KILL PEOPLE in this game. So, how can you kill people in a game and say you can't cuss. Its a double standard, and the people who run the CoG servers are 2 faced.

They once threatened to have my CD Key banned from Bungie somehow. What a laugh. I think they're a bunch of hippocrits. Besides, there's 100's of other servers.

What Halo needs to do is have an option to turn off the text completely.

Cussing generally translates from the video game to real life.

There's a sophomore at our high school who cussed to no end on XBL, and before a few months were up, he was just the same in the presence of his own parents...

However, when you kill someone in Halo, you know it's not really killing, it's just a mock fight to promote skill building. how often does killing in a video game translate into killing in real life? Rarely, and only if the person is immature enough to not understand the difference between real life and video games.

I guess it's sort of a habit people develop that's not healthy at all. When you cuss a lot it starts slipping out everywhere - another coworker at CompUSA unwittingly said f**k the other day, and freaked out this 13 year-old...but it's not like killing someone in a video game will just translate the same way into real life - not by a longshot.

Servers that ban cussing do not have a double-standard. True, you kill people, but everyone recognizes it's a game, and the killing doesn't really evolve or become a habit in real life - while cussing can easily do that.

BTW - to the guy who started the thread, if you still haven't bought it, you can just download/buy a cd-key at gamespot or a similar site.

It's their server, and you're playing on it because they let you. They make the rules, not you. And before you go throwing around the term hypocrite, you should know what it means. It literally means to judge another above yourself. It's not hypocrisy if they don't cuss (which I know they don't), because they judge you by the same standard whereby they judge themselves.

That's right - 100's. If you don't like their rules, you can always find another.

:)

come to think of it, there IS a way to create a languague filter for halo CE at leats. some geniouses created a dedicated server mod that allows you to vote, have better admin priviliges, and filter out words. haven't seen it for a while though... and i forget the name...

To what Chewy Gumball said. I think he meant OCG not COG. If you are really worried about swearing, get CE. I dont know if it is me, but I see like a total of one swear word for every game I play. Like d@mn.
The reason why, most of those servers are dedicated, and if you swear enough, your kicked. So it gets kept clean.

I like to trash talk when I play. Like if I totally blast a player that's been smackin' his mouth, I like to trash talk too. Its part of the fun to me. I also use trash talking to my advantage sometimes. I'll trash talk someone into doing something not to smart and get an easy kill. So, in that respect, I'm more of a fan of dedicated servers that have no rules, as opposed to the servers (like the }CoG{ servers) run by tight assed people who think a lot of stuff is offensive and are more concerned with keeping the game in line then actually having fun. You think you're joining one of those servers becuase it's laid back and relaxed and you can enjoy yourself. But as soon as you do something a bit out of line, you'll be banned. So really, how fun is that?

They're there just to play and have fun. In fact, it is quite fun. And of course - you're acting out of line. Acting out of line usually isn't a good thing, it just shows immaturity. I guess you like to act out of line a lot?

Tight assed? Not really. As long as you don't go in wanting and feeling a need to break the rules [which is what I believe you do on the servers w/rules], there's no issue. They aren't tight assed, as long as your follow the server's rules. Same with any other server with rules.

So you don't think cussing is offensive? In general, you'd be fine with someone cussing at you day and night? Cussing is treated the way it is because it IS offensive.

And at any rate, the servers with rules never get out of hand and end up with over the top swearing, tk'ing, or anything else. They end up with 16 players focused on the game, improving their skill, having fun - what's so bad about that?

Hey iamwhie, do you have any links to info about that admin thing?

Well, on the [RS] servers (the servers that I play on. I rarely, maybe once a month, play on others), the only rule that really is in place is a tk'ing ban. I think if you get 5 tk's in 5 mins your CD key is banned for a month. Cursing, depending which admins are on at the time (such as whether Lost (just give him an excuse) or J-Law (doesn't care) is on) can vary from no penalty to banning permanently. I for one have a wee-bit of a problem with cursing *rolls eyes*. Luckily my people know this, and I have an advantage... NOTE: Sorry if that was incoherent babbling. I'm tired

Yes, rules are good things to have in place on a server. They're there simply to keep the game fun, and not get messed up by no good people like tk'ers. tk'ers suck. If i wasn't in [RS], I'd be in =PAT= with MA5B.

Of course they would ban cussing, then. "Children of God." Although why they would play such a demonical game is beyond me.

And its not the language that irks me so much as theres no limit to how much you can type. You can type messages that fill up the entire screen, if you want. Point in being, I started up my game, and two people joined who were obviously cooperating. When one was being shot at, the other would just spam up the screen typing "a" till the screen was filled. Couldnt get a good shot through all that crap.

Which is why I hope with Halo 2 for PC, they move that text off screen. Put it at the bottom or top, like the way Unreal Tournament does. Or at least give you the option to turn it off. Or better yet, put a /ignore feature in it, so you can ignore annoying players.

And BTW, you don't need custom rules for TK'ing. That was taken care of by one of the earlier patches to the game. 3 TK's in a set time period and the game auto bans you from that server. That's why when someone TK's me twice, I give them permission to TK me a third time. In fact, I usually hunt them down and let them kill me! Hahahaha BAN!
