First post!
Touching on what someone else said, I remember the year when Halo was going to come out. More distinctly I remember me and 2 of my friends mesmerized as we watched through a game store window the little preview of the game that would dominate our lives for the next few years. This little 2-3 minute bit of Halo mesmerized us as it played over and over again and we sat there and watched it, over and over again.
We were tugged away from the screen with regret and a "We gotta play that!" attitude
We did play it. I remember falling asleep with the controller in my hand on The Library. The jump when all of the sudden i'd be smacked from behind by a flood monster. Overall that first night of Halo was very memorable.
Now down to specific times.
Well me and my two friends quickly became the "best" in our area. We held a small gathering of local halo players every saturday. About 10-16 in all. I remember one epic capture the flag game, it was me, Drake and my two friends Andrew and Payton, who were then known as Phantom and Morpheus repectively against about 12 other people. What transpired is surely the stuff of legends. I'm talking about 4 hours of brutal base defending on Blood Gulch with a 3 second timer! This was good news for the little noob zerglings who spawned 3 seconds after we killed them, but bad news for us. But still, we held on until the end. Even though we ended up losing. In that same game I remember we held the top of the enemys base for 15 minutes, twas great.
In another similar matchup of CTF, but with less opponets, on blood gulch i recall our flag was stolen and it was 2-0 enemy.
Me and Morpheus are zerging their base while Phantom stays back and defends. It was all going well for about 10 minutes when i get a call across the room. "They got our flag, get ready!" I don't know if this caused a brain fart in me and Morpheuses mind, but it must have done something as we both died soon after. I quickly respawned and hopped into the Warthog heading toward the opposite base with Morpheus jumping in as the Gunner. I see Phantom come through the portal with the sniper rifle as me and Morpheus drive past trying to catch up with the other warthog, whose passenger currently had our flag!. BAM! Our warthog got slammed with a rocket round from behind and the warthog was flipped and Morphues was slain. I jumped away from the flying reckage to meet my rocketeer. Then swore when i realized what weapon I had, me being the rash idiot that I am didnt grap the regular pistol when I spawned, had only the plasma pistol (dumb settings, wasnt our chose but our opponets way of keeping us contained with the 3 seconds respawns and the dumb weapon defaults). I charged up a shot and ran straight towards him.
I had some luck, because apparently this peon had not read the "Halo 101 : Rocket Firing while on level ground" Wherin he would have read that when you are on level ground you do not, and let me stress, do not fire the rocket direct shot straight at an opponet. What you really should do is jump in the air and fire the rocket at their feet. So he fired the rocket and a ducked as it wissed past my head. His second mistake was not immediately reloading after the shot to the warthog. So while he reloaded I shot the charged shot and wacked! him while his shields were down.
I quickly recovered and watched in agony as I saw their flag carrier arrive at their base and go up the ramp. I flipped the warthog and got in starting toward their base hoping for a miracle, when out of the corner of my eye I saw on Phantoms screen the sniper zoom right on the flag carrier as he ran across the top of the base. Everything seemed to stand still as the flag carrier was just on the ledge of the drop leading towards the base. Then the echoing sniper shot ran throughout the halo arena. Phantom got him! I coudnt believe it, I drove the short way towards their base as the crys of "NO WAY!" echoed from the other room.
It was then a rush to see who could get to the flag first. I went up the ramp and apparently was being tailed by many people, Because I heard the from from across the room the beautiful sounds of "Double Kill" then "Triple Kill" Morpheus had gotten the sniper rifle and gone through the portal himself to begin a little noob killing of his own. I dropped into the hole and returned out flag.
This gave us a boost of confidence (gee wonder why) and we ended up winning that CTF game 3-2.
That's my little "unique" halo experience, there were many others and hopefully there will be many more to come once Nov 9 rolls around.
Halo 2 finally convinced me to get Xbox Live! so that will be a ton of fun :)
