(Oh noes! My old account got deleted while I wasn't looking. This makes me sad. :( )
My best memory of Halo 1 has to be getting my friend hooked on the game. We first played it on co-op, and my friend really enjoyed it. He told his father about it, who reportedly told him that they wouldn't get an XBOX for just one good game. Long story short, by about three months later, his family had an XBOX, and two of his uncles had XBOX's, and they were all getting together fairly regularly to play over the LAN. He started inviting me over to join them. We fairly regularly got groups of eight people together, and we always played weird no-shields, human-weapons variants. It was fun as hell.
We kept this up through Halo 2's release. By this time, his family had three XBOX's and three copies of Halo 1 and 2. We continued to play over LAN for some time, and we still played the fast-paced no-shields, human weapons variants from before, but now with BRs and shotty's instead of pistols and ARs. I got nicknamed "Ze Sniper" by my friend's uncle because of my frequent use of that weapon. After Halo 2 had been out for a few months, I got a LIVE subscription and told my friend how fun it was to play online. Pretty soon, his family had 3 gamertags (one for him, his father, and his brother), his uncle had a gamer tag, his other uncle and cousin had a gamertag each, and a few other cousins had gamertags, XBOX's, and copies of the game. We started moving our games online. (I kinda regret in a way that I sort of instigated this change. We've never had a LAN party since everyone got LIVE, which was okay because it was convenient, but the LAN parties were so much more fun.)
Many months and awesome memories later, Halo 3 came out. By now we had abandoned our old no-shields games to breath some freshness into Halo 2, and eventually started going out onto LIVE to play Big Team Battle in Matchmaking as one big team. We've continued this in Halo 3, and everyone still has their own 'BOX and copy of the game. By now I'd guess I've cost his family in excess of $8,000 with my little demonstration of Halo 1's co-op. ^^ Oops. I don't think they hold it against me though. ; )
6 XBOX's and 6 XBOX360's - $4,800
6 copies of Halo 1, 2, and 3 - $960
6 LIVE accounts over 2 years - $540
Ethernet cables, LAN hubs, wireless routers, extra controllers, headsets, replacement XBOX's, $2,000
Friends and memories that will last a lifetime - PRICELESS
Thanks for the terrific game Bungie. Here's looking forward to many more years of Halo and future games.
