I dont know if anyone else has this problem, but for some reason, halo rapes my computer when it really shouldnt.

My specs are:
Dell dimension 8300
2.6 GHz pentium 4
2 GB ram
radeon 256 MB 9800XT

With all the settings full, I can only run at 800x600 without a serious drop in FPS. Oddly enough, I can run UT2K4 at full settings as high as 1152x864 without any real problems.

I have all the latest drivers for everything, but they never make a real difference.

Is there anything I can do to make halo run better on my computer?

that's what happened when i first installed halo, and i only have dell dimension 4600. if you know what a monitor is, its bascically the big machine with the screen on it. just adjust the size and everything will be good. and after you exit halo you shouldnt hafta re-adjust your monitor. and maybe get ur paritcles to high.

Duck, theres no way to say this nicely so... you are no help at all. You should be getting better performance so there are a few things you should do. First run a virus and spyware scan. Second would be to stop unnessisary processes running in the background. Third would be to put -use11 or -use14 in the command line.

With all settings enabled you cna only run at 800x600? I had a 9600XT and only enabled half of the stuff and ran at that, with about 27fps.

It's Halo, dude. For the graphics you get it does -blam!- your pc. Even my high end X850XT warship can only snag 65fps on high settings at higher resolutions. I can get double that on newer games.

Granted, 65fps isn't bad - but my point is that Halo is a very demanding game. Your hardware and system is fine, it's the game engine. If you can get the high settings on unreal tournament on a higher resolution you're right where you should be with a 9800XT. Just know - the graphical porting job done by Gearbox for Halo leaves a bit to be desired. The killer is the shaders they use, and the lighting - the lighting is too demanding for what you get, same with specular.

Sorry, but that's Halo :(

I keep my computer verry clean, fire wall, spy ware and virus scaner, all up to date. I also have a special account with nothing but the nessecary processes running that I use just for games. I tried using the -use11 and -use14 ocmmands, but I allways get a message saying it can not be found, the exe is located at C:\Documents and Settings\[insert my name here]\Desktop\gaming\halo stuff\halo ce

I really don't want to play with specular and particles turned down, because on custum H2 maps, thats what makes everything look H2-ish

I guess I will just have to live with the horrible aliasing of 800x600

Yeah, Halo...I dunno, they could've made it much more pc-friendly, considering the XBox version runs on the equivalent of a GeForce 3, or even lower than a 9500, and on a sub-1GHz processor. Pretty weak, IMO. I will agree, without the specular and lighting it isn't the same.

What are the frame rates like?

1152x864:

Normal level: Just walking around, about 120. But once I get a few more bipeds and some particles on screen, it drops down to about 50.

H2 levels with all the supper high bump mapping: About 70, when things get going..... X(

800x600:

Normal level: About 180-220, once I get in the action, 60-90

H2 levels: About the same as normal levels on 1152x864

most computers dont like halo...like my parents. its too bad, because if computers liked halo, we could have a party, and likewise, if my parents liked halo, i could enjoy myself.

wow. i have a 9600 xt and i get 40-60 fps at 1024x768 with all settings on high

sometimes it dips down to 20-30, but thats not common

It might have to do with the fact mine was not an AIW and ran on a 2GHz P4. However, Mard had the same card and had the frame rate similar within 2 fps.

At any rate, he's on par with his card.

Id just like to point out that although "98% of the teenage population does or has tried smoking pot", 95% of people in this forum are apparently part of the 2% who hasnt, so you have to question how accurate that statement is...

No, you're right, using a non 8X slot can slow down graphics, especially on a higher-end AGP card like a 9800XT. Not much, but a noticeable amount.

Think of how many people there are in the world (around 6 billion) then say around one third are teenagers (2 billion) and then compare that to the amount of people here. I would say it is close to correct. Even though 79% of statistics are made up on the spot.
