Subject: Motion capture in Halo: Reach

Hi! <3

An audience member at the PAX panel asked if motion capture was used in the games, as you may know...

The first question asked.

And if you notice, instead of a simple "no", CJ Cowan lists the previous titles as not using motion capture. Perhaps he unintentionally was alluding that Halo: Reach in fact WILL use it. In which case it would definitely add some significant change to the game engine.

Of course this is 100% speculation, but I'd like to see if you agree or disagree. This was just a gut feeling I got by hearing CJ's response.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I don't know really, all I know is that even though they DIDN'T use Mocap, one thing they DID do was video record themselves performing actions that the characters would do, then used those videos to inspire the in-game animation creators. (As seen in the Bonus Videos of the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack disk)

Interesting thought...

I wouldn't put it past Bungie to try something new, but based on the past, they could likely not be using motion capture yet.

I guess it's a toss-up! :D

Another thought: what if their new studio in Bellevue includes a new Mocap studio?

lies.

video games have ALWAYS used motion capture, since the late ps1 era. that's how you get smooth and realistic animations for your characters.
I assure you that you'd notice it if a game didn't use motion capture...
besides in one of the vidoc for H3, we see some members of Bungie doing some motioncap o.o ... explain this.

but if he meant "natal" and "player motion capture a la wii" ... then I dunno. ignore me.

I wish I was still legendary.

The majority of Halo 3 was hand keyed animation.

It would be great to get a halo game where the cinematics actually are MoCap, just for realism. H3's were...well, a bit stiff in terms of animation. Not terrible, definitely better than fallout 3's animation of walking, but still not great.

Lies.

Halo has always used hand keyframed animation. Being an animator myself, I can tell what's keyframed and what's mocapped. Halo animations are definitely not the greatest or realistic animations out there. Cutscene animations? Totally keyframed.
