From what ive seen, the new silenced smg fills this role. It is stronger than the current smg and has alot of recoil. The recoil is where the skill comes in because its better to use short controlled bursts. I dont know the clip size but i would imagine its less than the AR. I hope so. I guess well have to wait and see how it works.
I think the point is that the AR is a beginning weapon (for beginners as well starting matches) it is pretty much medium everything: medium range, medium power and medium clip size. this of course means that most weapons have some advantage over it: the Battle Rifle and Covenant Carbine have a longer range, the Plasma Rifle (the covenant equivilant) has more punch and the (normal) SMG has a bigger clip. I am pretty sure the newer SMG won't lose its ridiculous clip size in ODST, it is after all, the SMG's main strength. however, we don't know which of the two will make it into Reach, the game may or may not have stealth elements to it similar to ODST. either way, the new SMG and Magnum are not "n00b friendly" either way, ODST is more of an expansion than a stand alone game, (even though it is fully capable of it) Reach is an entirely new game and the weapon balancing may be radically different.
One thing important to note about our two newest spawn weapons that the silenced SMG and Magnum come hand in hand: they are the bullet hose and the precision hand cannon or to put it another way, the medium/close range automatic weapon and the medium/long range headshot machine. the two guns cover each other's weak points fairly well.
it is quite possible that Reach will employ a similar method to balance their weapons. spawning with two weapons with different strengths seems far better than having a single gun that would either have no weak points or be overpowered.
Either way, we can rest assured that Bungie has it handled
