Personally, I liked Halo 2 better than Halo 3 when it came to online.

The reason? Custom games. For whatever reason, it seemed like Halo 2 was based heavily around Custom games. Cat and Mouse, Zombies (The original...You know, honor rules?), Mafia, etc. The actual matchmaking was sweet, but the custom games were really where it was at. And the best part? Every time you logged on, it seemed that 8 out of your ten friends were in some kind of custom game .You'd join, you'd play, it was awesome.

That didn't hold true for Halo 3. It just didn't happen....Online was huge, matchmaking was huge. Done and done.

My idea? An xbox live 'forum' for custom games. Think about it. You can go into matchmaking, have that as it always was. Or, select custom games and a list appears of all games accepting people. You'd find zombies, cat and mouse, custom map battles (Let's be honest, doesn't it suck to forge an excellent map and never get the sixteen people required for capture the flag?).

The list would allow you to see the game type, map (if forged, show map name and original map.), people in, people allowed. Perhaps you could add a note as well. ie; "For serious capture the flaggers" "Zombies are faster" "No one under 16 years old allowed"

It's a thought I've had for a while, figured I'd see what you guys think.

resident evil on headlong... good times.

but there would be a problem with your idea : kids.
a kid makes a sh**** map (like, snowbound infection, all entrances blocked except for the shotgun gate), 1 shot (any weapons) kills the zombie and everybody camps in the middle. you know, the common horribly boring gametype and map.

these thousands of kids would think "omfg dis is teh bes map evra!!! i maeke costom game and play!!111"
you'd find more of these crappy games in the list than actual interesting games imo... :/

Yeah, that's my worry. I think the ability to add a bit of a note would help, though. Ie "Well balanced." Granted, you'll probably get your A-hole kids still, but I think that, so long as you have the ability to add notes, we may be able to avoid that. Rule of thumb : If they can't make a complete sentence, they can't make a good game.

in Metal Gear Online, you can rate the host, from 1 to 5 stars. this could just do the trick... if everybody joins and see it's a crappy gametype on a boring blocked and unfair map, they'd leave and give the host 1 star, and he'd end up with nobody joining his games anymore.
on the other hand, make great modes on great maps, everybody loves it, get 5 stars, and people will join YOUR games.

Agreed. And seeing as Xbox live already has a feedback system, I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to implement either.

The reason behind this was that XboxLive on the original Xbox was basically made by Halo 2. It was the game 90% of the people on Live played constantly.
With the Xbox 360, there's so many great muliplayer games out that the people on your friends list will always deviate between different games, because they have the option.

I think a search for custom games would be a great idea, but at the same time I don't think too much of it, one of the best parts about custom games was that you played with the people you knew. A search feature would ruin this, although, in the end, I suppose a custom game with random people is better than no custom game at all?

What their should be is a Bungie favorite matchmaking playlist that is made up of custom games, or people have a special poll on the site to add them, which is better so we don't get caught into sucky map custom games.
