Yes, And I quote, sorry, grabbed one of the books cause I was thinking something was wrong with my statement lol.
"The marines could hold hteir own on the ground, but the covenant would just retreat to their ships, and glass the world."
Humans couldn't stand a chance in space, hence why most worlds fell (Unless you count Captain Keyes, but he was a tactical genius).
So yeh, I could see one, you read about the Spartan 3s, imagine having three hundred marines with you, and leading an attack on thousands of covvies, it would be great, all in one battle, not just sequence by sequence, have seraphs and banshees, cars and ghosts, etc. Geez, they should have a level like that in Halo: reach lol

Just wihtout the part of the generator blowing up in our faces lol, or a covvie cruiser dropping in and glassing us.

And as for leading, I mean in FPS, not RTS style... bullets here, lasers there, then you would get your fair share of awesomeness.

Ok, to get things started I would like to begin saying that Halo 3 is just terrible when it comes to making you feel like you are in a real war between Humanity and a race of aliens driven to destroy us, so pretty much in all of the games of the Halo triology Bungie has failed to deliver the brutality of a war. No funny comments, no bright shiney days, etc.

Although Marines aren't as good as a geneticly augmented super soldier, they should be able to kick ass and take names (which I have heard many Marines in Halo 3 say but they just can't do it), by this I mean they should be able to shoot with a great amount of accuracy, they shouldn't look clueless on the battle field, they should act like a real MARINE would in those situations.

Now lets move on to dismemberment or in other words, gibs.

GoW has been able to present this, and CoD also has in World at War, so why not Halo? Not exactly to the extreme like what Gears of War did, but something a bit smaller.

Example:
Shot in the arm with a sniper. It gets blown off.

Sound good?

Halo is not meant to be a realistic game. Not in the least. It's meant to be kind of arcadey. And it's the only successful game of this time to do that. Stop trying to make it more like other successful games. Just let it be Halo.

  • 09.17.2009 5:51 PM PDT

It can still be Halo. Just a grittier version. Which is what a lot of people want...

  • 09.17.2009 5:57 PM PDT

I think that the way the AI behaves should depend on the difficulty level.

But I agree, every AI should be more vicious, and overall more challenging.

So this is what we currently have.

I think it should be more along the lines of this.

Of course this is a bad picture but basically, there needs to be less yellow, more contrast, and a little less saturation.

  • 09.17.2009 5:59 PM PDT

Well I dont agree at the part were hand, feet or the whole body gets disabled I do agree that the Covenant should show there true colors besides Bungie should take the advantage now that the game is "M" for Mature

If I remember right there was a Video that Bungie made that was showing a 2 energy sword handed Elite Stabing a Brute to the Floor!

Now that was Epic,I dont know why Bungie removed it later

ISU Cyclones!

I agree that Halo: Reach should have the feel of real desperation and loss, but violence?

We didn't need to have Johnson bleeding profusely through a hole in his chest to really feel bad during that last scene.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is no. I do not the amount of gruesomeness turned up in Halo: Reach.

  • 09.17.2009 7:05 PM PDT

Covenant swarms? Yeah, sure. Why not? Oh, right. The hardware can't handle that much sophisticated AI. I mean, stupid zombie swarms - sure. Sophisticated, smart alien swarms - wait for the next-gen consoles.

"Grit" level upped? Heck no. That is not why I play Halo. If I want that, I will play GoW or CoD. I want my games to feel different. Otherwise, why buy Halo? If it is that similar to CoD, I'll just play CoD and that's it.

Marine AI boost? Sure the AI could be improved, but it isn't necessarily bad. The point is to make the player feel that they are needed. If the Marines do all the work, what's the point? And since the hardware can't handle massive enemy swarms, that is needed to balance them out. (Although, since the engine was rebuilt, perhaps the game could have slightly better Marines and slightly bigger swarms of enemies. Don't hope for too much though.)

Also, I never had a good AI helper during CoD 5. I did all the work, and it was stupid because the game's difficulty on Veteran involved enemy grenade spam into your ONE piece of cover. The game was far too linear.

What I'd like to see in Halo: Reach is the grittiness of real warfare, not CoD or GoW. What do I mean about that? Here is some description.

I'd like to see bigger, more brutal explosions. For example, have you start a mission in a trench network awaiting a Covenant assault. You're being bombarded by dozens of long range plasma artillery, which is blasting the dirt all around you, leaving the air covered in a blue / brown haze. Then, the covenant begin their combined air and ground assault. You see Seraphs strafe the lines, kicking up blue flashes and dust. Then, SAMs kick in. They destroy Seraphs and Phantoms in huge numbers. You'll see missiles shoot out from behind the line, then detonate dozens of vehicles.

This will create an atmosphere of violence, explosion, and danger. You'll feel part of a big battle, not a lone person. I'd make it even tougher, if the player chooses to leave the trench network, make it possible for them to be instant killed by an artillery round. Make it difficult.

Other possibilities, give the player a more powerful AT weapon, one that destroys Wraiths in one hit. Give buildings more damage, so that plasma mortar shells punch holes in the wall, and leave you coverless.

Bungie can deliver the brutality of war without blood or dismemberment, they need to up the amount of atmospheric combat, make the player more vulnerable, deliver more and larger explosions (make frags like Halo:CE frags, those were dangerous, now they're just annoying), and kick up the amount of dust and haze.

Halo: Reach can be made and should be made more brutal. Its about the fall of a massive planet, there is not a happy ending to the game, so don't make the game happy. Bungie can make that happen, and they don't need more blood or limbs.

I make a legitimate thread on the most logical choice for the next Bond actor, and you take that away from me by creating a parody thread indirectly connecting my thread to yours.

I hope your kids have bad influences and develop bad personalities. I wish this with all my heart.

Just look at the Halo 3 Vidoc "Is Quisnam Protero Damno!" look at the insane, brutal animations, and put them in Reach.
A brute pulling a marine's arms off.
An elite chopping off a brute's arms with 2 energy swords, and then running him through.
A brute running and tackling someone into a large object.
The Arbiter's punch on THE cutscene in Halo Wars.

You can't kill what's dead.

Stand. Fight. Resist. S2F.

I suggested this before. Halo: Reach definitely needs to beef up the marines and grittiness.

The boys at ONI and those squid heads have a lot in common. Can't understand a thing they say and they're just as good lookin.Guess they're all going to have a long talk about technical whatsits and scientific doodads when we get home.

I agree the brutality of the Covenant should be displayed. I think Reach is a perfect oppurtunity for this. Since the planet is in the process of being glassed, a post apocalyptic and more brutal side of Halo could easily be examined. Dismembering people with the Energy Sword would be immensily satisfying too XD

This has already been stated somewhat on the campaign ideas thread over on the stickies.

  • 09.17.2009 7:48 PM PDT

Brutality should be placed in terms of story, tone and mood, heavy dialogue, scripted sequences like medics trying to save people with open heart surgery using small, rusty clamps, and a lack of resources. Crazed mothers looking for their children in an occupied city. Gibs are not a necessity. Especially the high and unrealistic level of gibs in your example.

if Bungie gave the 'brutality of war' not as many people would buy the game. right now, they have the perfect balance of violence and art. i dont think they should change it a bit.

  • 09.17.2009 7:49 PM PDT

I clicked this link expecting an intelligent conversation. Ha.

I don't want the brutality of war so much as I want immersion. Halo 3 was supposed to make you feel like you were in the war, but many times I just felt like the main battle was somewhere else and I was off doing my own thing with a squad or two of marines.
