Subject: the x button

I've seen many threads on these forums about the removal of equipment. I would like to know what people want the x button to do. if you have an Idea please post it and I'll add it to the OP. My idea is to press x to snap to nearby cover. Not like in Gears, I don't want the player to be able to shoot ar grenade from the cover postion. I know you guys can come up with something better though so lets see it.

X could be for setting way points or acknowledgment of orders or directives.

Maybe they could fit in a sprint function somewhere, just saying if the maps are bigger it could help get around quicker.

X could simply become the new Flashlight button, allowing the D-Pad to, in multiplayer, access team chat (While maintaining the ability to have a Flashlight on in MP, hey, I like the flashlight!). And in Campaign, the D-Pad could access 4 commands for your AI buddies.

Press x to cancel and/or reload

I know there is no equipment in ODST. I don't know about Reach though. X could be for setting way points or acknowledgment of orders or directives.

Exalted is considered "the highest" because you can't get any bans or warnings of any kind for quite a long time, which is harder than just being a member for a long time.

I personally can't stand buttons that do something that movement already does.

If I can move my character into cover, why should I have to push a button to confirm that I want him to take cover? I'm already taking cover, so wtf.

Same goes with jumping. If I'm allowed to jump, why do I have to walk up to a window, wait for the game to prompt me and then push the jump button so that the game will animate me jumping through the window? Stupid.

X is great for equipment, but I'm sure Bungie has something up their sleeves. I hope it's not squad commands/movements... that can be trite and boring in my opinion.

Nihilism (from the Latin nihil, nothing) is a philosophical position that argues that existence is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value.

Put simply in the words of Nietzsche as "the will to nothingness".

Maybe they could fit in a sprint function somewhere, just saying if the maps are bigger it could help get around quicker.

Possibly. I like that Halo doesn't feel like most other shooters now-a-days that have cumbersome movements like taking cover and sprinting. If anyone can pull it off so that it feels right though, its Bungie.

The Bring Back Bloodgulch Group have many members looking for more its kind of an unofficial petition to Bungie to bring back Bloodgulch in Reach http://www.bungie.net/fanclub/bx3g/Group/GroupHome.aspx

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

X will activatez tha VISRZ!!!!!

Now to be more serious. X could simply become the new Flashlight button, allowing the D-Pad to, in multiplayer, access team chat (While maintaining the ability to have a Flashlight on in MP, hey, I like the flashlight!). And in Campaign, the D-Pad could access 4 commands for your AI buddies.

Not so much Squad based, as just simple "Follow Me", "Move Out", "Hold", and "Return". (Effectively Marine or Spartan AI will automatically be in squads for you, you tell one marine in the squad to follow, they all follow. Now without even looking at one, you can say "Hold" They stay where you are. "Return" will have AI holding positions return to you, and "Move Out" will have them just do the normal AI thing. If you engage a second squad of AI, your first squad will automatically Move Out. This keeps the game simple, and removes most of the baggage of Squad based shooters. Like I said, in MP, the only difference is you can actually use your flashlight :P.

Effectively, the AI will behave like normal Halo AI, unless you choose to use them. You have that choice, let the AI be, or tell them to follow you (A great way to get them in a vehicle quickly, I might add.)

Why is Captain Kirk climbing the mountain?

Pressing X on an area of the map orders your unit to move to that location and take up cover near and around that location.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

I would love this, I wanted a sprint function ever since I read the books and found out how fast the Spartans actually are.

I know it doesn't seem fast, but they are considered to always be running (unless you're only lightly pushing the joystick), so sprinting isn't really relevant. I agree that they seem a bit slow, so I think they need a slight speed boost overall, but no sprinting.

Back on topic... I think the waypoint idea would be nice. I'd especially like it in a Campaign/Firefight scenario.

Flashlight, meh, I don't really think it's that relevant.

I don't think the VISR would be ood, but a toned-down version of it might be better, something that gives you the status of your squad, objectives, etc.

Then again, I think equipment is fine.

Night Vision ftw.

  • 09.18.2009 2:03 PM PDT

Has any game implemented a first person cover mechanic? Other then KZ2, in which it's disabled in multiplayer? Wouldn't that be interesting?

  • 09.18.2009 2:07 PM PDT

I think that it could be used as a button to activate your visors lights, night/thermal vision scope, etc.

But of course, this means night maps!!

Huh, there is a difference between a run and a sprint my friend. In all three games the Spartans don't move that fast, and an actual sprint feature would be a nice addition. You cannot run at full speed while aiming a weapon, no matter how well trained you are.

Same here but if that doesn't gel how about X being able to switch fire mode? Then if your in a vehicle it would switch seats or change into a first person perspective. Just throwing stuff out there, IMO equipment wasn't a horrible addition to the sandbox.

Mabey, just mabey, the X button will return to what it's supposed to do. Reload. The Halo 2 controls were just so much more comfortable. 'Cept it'll be more the Halo:CE controls scince there'll be no more DWing.

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

If anything, it will be for the x-ray type view they show. Hit 'X' and go into night mode or whatever it is. Although what I am more curious about is what the left button will do, cause I'm hoping they will drop DWing as well if ODST does well with the mechanic. I feel Halo should never have gone to DW.

Maybe with the sprinting thing to make it more fair it uses your sheild power to make you go faster?
That way if someones in a fight they cant sprint to try and get away?

When did Bungie decide to add AI Squads? Honestly, the game would start to feel like GRAW (I love it so don't spam me). Plus, I like not having to command Marines around. Jarheads humph!!!

in ODST the X button is used to toggle the visor

Great job so far guys! I've seen some really nice suggestions. Don't get too offended by my first suggestion as it was kinda off the top of my head.

Okay, I have another one. Press x to cancel. (could easily be combined with reload) This will work best if button combos are a custom games option.
