We all are aware of the success of forge in Halo 3. Today websites have evolved such as forgehub, xforgery, ETC. Within these cummunities are not only people and maps, but the very fabric that keeps our 2 year old game competing with brand new titles. Contests are held such as Forgehub's current 1 vs 1 turnament. Maps get promoted, reviewed, and improved because of forgers that take pride in forge. I can honestly say that it has become a hobby for me, not just Halo 3 in general but just forge. And for Halo: Reach, we all want it to reach it's full potential and to do that the game must have a tool that is designed for building maps. Not a weapon modifier that forge was origonally portrayed to be. Too accomplish this we must study what makes forge so popular and why it didn't take the same road that FarCry 2 did. Here are some bullet points:
1. Designed for easy use to the common player
2. Ability to forge in the same game as friends to discuss
how a map could be improved.
3. A downloading system over the internet (Bungie.net of
course)
4. Ability to be origonal. For instance, people use the back
hallway of Foundry as a path throughout their maps rather
rather than building there own. On Neosho, by
Creeping Death he used Orbital's natural surrounding to
build a very good 1 vs 1 map.
5. Fun aspects to the game. You could never make Duck Hunt,
Pennyless, Conquest, or MLG without Halo's options.
What can we learn from this? One, that a map making tool is well recieved on Halo 3. Two, it offers something that no other game can offer. Here is my opinion:
Forge should not be replaced. Instead it should be adjusted and improved to meet the needs of the player. Now it is natural human nature to want something more than what you have so why not use that to an advantage? Have the AAA game engine bent on DLC so everything can be updated to fit the needs of what the cummunity feels like.
This idea continues the aspect of building on one of Bungie's maps but what about this? Instead of pressing X to bring up an items menu, it would bring you up to a skin menu. From there you can chose from lots of shapes and sizes but you have the option of downloading special type moving objects from Bungie.net? Like an elivator or a window thta makes you think your looking into space. Simalar to the way we can DL maps by clicking on links from websites like forgehub or xforgery?
It is simple, makes people want to become more involved by joinging Bungie.net, applys to the common player, creates a feeling of creativity and no 2 maps will be exactly alike. Plus you can still be in the game with your friends because you continue to be an oricle. And, unlike FarCry 2, it is easy to spread maps using fileshare capabilities and websites. This is a simple yet great idea with much potential. It has never been thought of though it is not to far outstretched. Automatic interlocking and geomerging could be put in, and so could a 90 degree switch. Everything you need can be supported by downloadable object color scemes, new pieces, ideas, and everything that we all wish that forge was today. Now and can be the forge of this future game.
So what do you guys think? A successor map making tool instead of a brand new one?
