Subject: Brutes or Elites... the funner more challenging enemy?

rababa raba raba rah... is the brute after losing his cheetos met with a swift backhand by an elite

  • 09.19.2009 4:18 PM PDT

this thread is a joke.

i think one of you started spouting off about only kids liking brutes because they started in halo 3 and the elite fans being from h1 and 2. If you recall halo 2's final level, you'll remember how tartarus took his time to personally b**** slap each and every Elite Councilor and Zealot that the game would throw at him. Even the Arbiter(even though I am a fan)needed sniper support from one of halo's biggest names to take him down. Face it, Elite Zealots dont have s*** on Brute Chieftains and I consider myself an avid fan of the elites long before I knew about the Brutes.

Sorry but the Brutes take it in my opinion, but thats all it is...an opinion. Feel free to argue, i like debates.

P.s. how does this have anything to do with Halo reach?

Dom ~ Thread Killer

Elites have the better death cry. Advantage: Elites.

  • 10.16.2009 7:53 PM PDT

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

An Elite can single handedly kill a Spartan, Brutes seem less capable. Nuff said.

I have just been used to killing elites. They seem like a better enemy anyway.

FYI, I'm pretty sure "funner" is not a word.

Well if you ever read the books, there was no Brutes on Reach.... Therefore the only enemies will be the classic H1-H2 enemies.

They were written before brutes were even thaught of by Bungie. (2001)

Arby needed sniper support because Tarterous had invinctabilaty.
also, you have an unfiar argument. Elite arbiters would compare with the brute chieften (not h3 ones, Tarterous's rank, Tartourous was the chieften for ALL the brutes, not a pack of jump-packs)

  • 10.16.2009 8:13 PM PDT

The brutes suck in halo 3 for reasons of playability. If the Brutes were f***ing up the master chief 4 times before every checkpoint, Bungie loses its whole 9-14 yr old audience(which may not be a bad thing honestly). When you look at the books and further stories regarding the Halo series, you'll consistently see chief slapping Elites about as if he were clubbing baby seals, yet the first time he faces a brute(First Strike), he is almost killed and as far as i know, his fellow spartans sustain injuries(sorry havent read it in a while). I agree the Brutes in Halo 3 and ODST are easy pickings, but the Brutes as far as the Halo universe is concerned, Kick major tail.

and yes i understand this thread regards their video game incarnations but the Brutes are getting FAR too little respect.

I will concede that the Elite are worthy opponents but the Brutes are just overwhelmingly powerful.

  • 10.16.2009 8:21 PM PDT

all chieftains have invincibility(if only limited) and if the arbiter wasnt a fair match, then the arbiter with all of those zealots and councilors and Johnson should have been.

who cares f they have invincibility all u gots o do is run around them till its off or hurt them from a far so its wasted...but ya they need to b stronger like a hunter but smarter and faster...id love for brutes to kick ass but im srry elites have their shields plus some go camo ...they hide according to damage to heal altogether that makes them harder ...PLUS the white ones on legendary WTF they take like 4 stickies to kill them (halo 2)...brutes r weak they hide for no reason and also roar wen hurt which leaves them open ugh

But gameplay wise?
Elites didn't roar and jog at you once their shields were down. Not to mention brute shields could be taken down easily. Elites were good enemies.
And this is pretty much "What enemy do you want most in Reach?" so it does fit in to this forum.

Im still alive. Still here even when its dark.Staying alive for my friends...for my family.Life is rough. RIP Daddy.Im still myself, who I am will stay the same. And Im still here.I will live on until there is nothing left & right now there are few left and I hold on to them.Protectivley caring for what I care most.Even though the things I loved most are gone, possibley forever, I still have things I cant abandon.Im still alive, still...here.

both because theyre just fun to kill.

  • 10.16.2009 9:17 PM PDT

ill concede that as far as gameplay, anything short of a chieftain fights like a 6 yr old w/ cerebral palsey but my arguements revolve more around brutes as they are supposed to be represented as translated from books, stories, etc.

You guys just aint giving the Brutes enough credit
Elites are pretty d*** cool and they take any naval battle hands down. but when it comes to the surface battle, Brutes just have the raw power and overwhelming force to overrun their enemies.

  • 10.16.2009 9:27 PM PDT

This is my analysis of the enemies.

Elites:

Halo 1: Strafed fast, ducked behind cover, charged when stuck, but an overall good challenge.

Halo 2: Stood still, crouch walked for no apparent reason. Got stuck behind boxes, and they were slower now that we played as the Aribter.

Halo 3: Dumb friendlies that stick me with plasma grenades.

Brutes:

Halo 2: Bullet sponges that were slower, but had a hard to dodge lunge berserk. Easy to headshot with the carbine. Not enough rank variety.

Halo 3: Bullet sponges that are now slower, cannot damage anyone with their basic backhand animation, and have a useless berserk rush. Stand there when getting stuck. Good ranks though. Too bad the rookie Brutes take cover sparingly. Retreating to another group after the pack die is cool. Same with group grenade barrage.

Halo 3 ODST: Bullet sponges with shields. Take cover more often. Have more animations. Can actually do damage with berserk mode. Harder to headshot and wobble more. Move back and forth slowly to avoid sniper fire. Charge when stuck, and quickly move their heads down to avoid the final headshot after losing armor. Faster with a big dodge roll instead of a basic spin animation like in Halo 3. Basically slower bullet sponge versions of Halo 1 Elites, but Brutes. Hammer Brutes are harder to dodge.

So technically Bungie had to go back to square one in order to make the Brutes somewhere close to Halo 1 Elites in order for the enemies to be fun.

Maybe the reason they sucked so hard in Halo 1 was due to the fact they were not even in the game.

Both together could be quite legendary though. I mean, Halo 3 was bloody easy. The brutes might have been tough (ignoring the fact that they flinched like pansys when you melee them), but they were never backed up by serious medium ranged opponents.

Sure, there were jackals, but they failed epicly as a challenging opponent because:
A) They stood in the open or up in a tree with little to no cover to protect them. All. The. Time.
B) They had no shields so a simple headshot removes the threat.

But if there had been shielded elites, that could utilize cover, and would take a few seconds to take down, backing up those brutes?

It could be carnage. And what better way to challenge a five man squad of spartans than by doing just that?

We don't need to pick one over the other. Sure, make the game predominantly elites, but having brutes to shield meat and make things more interesting can't be bad, right?

I agree in some senses, a mixed force would pose the largest threat combining the greatest assets of each group, but i feel the Brutes need to have a higher level of representation in that mixed force. I'm not going to repeat the same points over and over but if you absolutely need my opinion to support this point, just refer to my points above.
