I believe Halo 3's multiplayer was a huge success due to the Ranking system. Although there are HUGE flaws in the ranking system which i'd like to address for Reach.

If Reach's MP is going to use the same system as H3 then i'd suggest changing Highest Skill for Average Skill. If average skill is used, people won't bother restarting accounts like they do on H3. It would take too long to acquire a higher average skill. To improve your average skill in halo 3, you'd have to rank up all the ranked playlists to one higher than your current skill. And to have highest skill 50 would mean you truly are a skilled player, not someone who just bought their account for $20 or whatever they go for. Rank needs to mean somethig. Using average skill instead of highest skill.. it WILL mean something!!!

halo 2s ranks

yeah i thought about that. But i prefer the halo 3 ranks, they look better as well as you earn an official rank rather than a number. I think reach should have the same idea, but change how you obtain the ranks using average skill not just highest skill.

Rank shouldn't be based on a very stupid an over complicated formula that often doesn't work (skill).

If anything, it should take into account K/D ratio and EXP.

I would prefer no ranking at all personally. It's a stupid symbol next to your name that incorrectly summarizes how good you are at Halo. It also causes the majority of account stealing, network manipulation, cheating and boosting. People wouldn't boost/cheat/manipulate the network if there was no benefit in doing it.

There should be some indicator of how many games you've actually won (but not games played)

Halo 2 skill system.

10 = horrible
20 = decent
30 = good
40 = amazing
50 = could be a pro if they wanted

Halo 3 EXP system, but tweaked. Let's say 1 EXP = a rank up. You would have to earn "points" to gain that EXP. Whenever you play, you earn points for doing things like killing, getting assists, winning games, stealing flags and arming bombs. You could have a little progress bar that filled up with your points to show how close you were to your next EXP (100 points = 1 EXP).

This way if you lose the game because your team was horrible but you still did good, you still get your points to get you closer to your next EXP, even if you don't get the game-win points (which would be a lot in comparison to, say, kill points to promote teamwork).

Maybe early on in your military ranks 1 EXP = rank up, then later 5 EXP = rank up, and at advanced levels 10 EXP = rank up. etc.

Personally, the ranking system makes me want to snap my Halo 3 disc in half sometimes!

But lets face it, there is nothing you can do about people making new accounts, or people being low ranked in certain playlists even though they are great players. I like the average skill idea, but i myself wouldn't want to have to rank up in every playlist because then i'd have to get a team together and stuff and it's just too much hastle. Some people just need to accept that they are not good enough to be the level they aspire to be, and if they want to get a higher level to keep playing and getting better, practice the right techniques and tactics and work on their aim. Because really, everyone gets angry that they aren't the level they think they should be and can't beat people once they reach a certain level, but honestly they need to just get better.

The only flaws in the system i see though is for example; my brother and I are both level 47 in doubles and have around 1500-1700 exp each. We are a good team and have beaten many teams of level 50's. We once beat 4 teams of 50's in a row on level 47 and did not level up, then lagged out of a game and levelled down. That makes no logical sense. If a couple of 47's convincingly beat teams of 50's ( we played on vessel and plurality and dominate those maps against anyone :D ), then why should they not level up? I mean beating 4 teams of 50's should be enough to be a level 50 right? The amount of exp a player has should not affect his level up for beating much better players than himself (this is why many people make new accounts). And if the amount of exp a player has is why he doesn't level up then that needs to be fixed. And once again players should level up for beating better raked players consistently.

Now i'm goign to go put my hands in ice water from all that typing.

I think that would be like the Call of Duty system, which leads mercenary type players to stuff the stat sheet at the team's expense. And i have always loved how Halo revolves around teamwork to win games, and winning games to rank up.
It's a team game and the teams result is what matters, not individual performance. If ranking up means that much, always enter with a good team of friends.

If done right it would work beautifully. Let's say 100 points = 1 EXP. You would get 50 points for a win, and maybe 2 point for a kill (if the kill is modified by a headshot, stick, assassination, part of a spree, etc.) it could be worth 3 points. For a death -1, for a betrayal -2.

This way you would still want to work as a team, but if you're the one doing all the work (i.e. going 20-0) you would still see some increase, though not near as much as the winners. Likewise if you're on the winning team but did horribly (i.e. you went 5-15) you would get less (40) points for the win than the person on your team who carried you) so that you are rewarded both for working as a team, and being an effective team player.

Basically, you have an even k/d ratio on the winning team, you get 50 points. If you go negative, you get less points, if you go positive, you get more points. You go positive more, you get closer to your next EXP faster, but not drastically faster.

yeah i thought that system was like call of duty.

But seriously, i believe reach's system should be an average thing. Nothing to do with how well someone does in one playlist because that means reach is just gonna be a more widely known game for boosting, more new people will play, 90% of the older people from h3 will play and then 80% of all people will constantly be making restarted accounts for NO reason.

The only other problem i see with the average rank idea is that it would be totally unfair for Australian players like myself (and other lag countries) because we would have to do this all with lag whereas i can get 47 in doubles on prefer good connection so i acually get good games. But every other playlist is always yellow/red bar and it would be so aggrevating to have to win in every playlist.

In the days of old, there were legends of a land long lost to time. This land was known as Ranna'Mor. Ranna'Mor was said to contain in its borders 7 warriors. These warriors had once unleashed a veritable hell upon the ancient world, until they were locked away. My name is Toriad, and I am one of those warriors. Our return is approaching. Do not run away, do not cower in fear; take solace in your final days, for that is all we can do. -Legend of Ranna'Mor

Rank already means something. Most games reward a player with experience or ranks just for completing a match. Halo 3 makes you work for it. I much prefer the current system.

More to the point, I definitely what to see the same ranking and experience system return in Halo: Reach. Perhaps more accurate ranking systems (like one is based directly off the navy's or the marine corps).
