Warning. people that hates wall of thexts should visit some other thread...

dont tell me "Noobs will destroy this" or "Xbox wont coap with the graphics"...just read.

I had an idea. the problem of transportation on Big maps. the soulution is either mancannon, teleporter or vehicle.

my Idea is. that a Pelican. that are automaticly following a invisible track over the map. The flight controlls is simply a switch(maybe telling the pilot to take-off).

it can be shot down but it will be hard as the Pelican itself are flying over the roof of the map(or out of sight from the ground). If the pelican is too damaged to be used anymore it should just be unusable, or if it is shot down it should just fly out of the map and despawn.
The pelican can't be repaired or respawned. if it's destroyed it's gone for the rest of the game.

The idea could be involving not seeing the whole pelican itself, but just the interior. as the pelican "docks" in a port or something. then only the map geometry would be seen and not the pelican itself.

what do you think? no noobs to ruin the flight, stupid laser spamming. it would be like telporting, just more realistic.

I love this idea, I think it's a good solution to the Pelican debate, although I do have some questions pertaining to it...

My first question is if players have the ability to repair Pelicans, or if they would just respawn like other vehicles.

My other question is more of a concern, and isn't really about the Pelicans themselves. Its the jack asses who get to the Pelican first with seven people behind him, and activate the Pelican leaving the other seven people to walk.

lets say that a minimum amount of players must be onboard for it to liftoff. that number is of course based on the team size.

lets say that in a 8v8 game. 3 people may board before the pelican depart.

another idea. a button on the controller(on the d-pad) reserves a seat in the pelican for you as long as you dont leave the base for 30 seconds...

Big Team Battle Multiflag/Slayer on Standoff/Valhalla/Sandtrap/Avalanche = Win

No map in Reach will be big enough for a Pelican to be necessary. Stop fooling yourself.

Yum, we truly don't know that. The chances of one being of that size are small...but Bungie can do whatever the hell they want to do. Their on their own remember? They can make their games how they want to, and it all depends on the game's Lead. If it's someone who want's a giant map...then it'll probably happen; but if it's not, then the maps will probably range in size like they did for H3.

How about just like COD, you can call for air support or something, and they drop like mongooses or weapon pods if your team is doing well.

If Bungie manages to increase the maximum number of players from 16 to something higher, I would imagine the maps would be substantially larger.

Yum's idea about dropping in vehicles and such is a good one. In Section 8 you can drop down different kinds of vehicles/support drops as you gain points from kills/capturing points/doing missions. Something like that in Halo would be hella usefull. But I think if you could call down a pelican/human aircraft equivalent to the Banshee (forgot the name) for transport that'd prett awesome.

Just have the pilot be an A.I., player sets points for pick up/drop off, and then waits for the ship to arrive. Eliminating crudy player pilots and making the job very simple. The AI could lay down a little covering fire as it dropped off it's payload and then leave. Wouldn't have to kill anyone, just enough to give the players enough time to find available cover w/o getting raped by entrenched enemies. There would have to be other rules and guidlines behind that but it's just an example.

Now the thread is getting derailed AND CoD-ish.

If you read the OP properly you'l see that not even an AI is needed.

I'm gonna do some 3d work tomorrow so You'l see what I mean by Docks and all that

u should be able to parachute out of it

  • 09.20.2009 3:11 PM PDT

it should be sorta like the troop carriers in star wars battlefront. u can load it up with spartans n online multiplayer games hav huge maps and u can use it for quick transport and let the spartans jump out of them into hotzones. i think it would be kinda cool

I have a similar idea to yours except instead of a pelican that drops you off theres a train that continuously goes back and forth between two bases and a mid-point. Similar to terminal from halo 2 except you can walk on and off the train when it stops for a few seconds to get across the map faster.

I can just imagine a ctf game where you fight to control the middle train station and when you do you load your whole team onto the train and storm the other teams base while they desperately defend and try to regain control of the map. you could also walk between bases but the trains there to get you quickly into the battle.

yea i could see that its just that would slow the frame rate down to have it constantly moving across the map the pelicans would be player controlled as would phantoms for the covenant that way crazier dog fights could start up in multiplayer matches if they ever happen that is

The pelicans will be flying out of sight most of the time. then the Xbox dont need to render it all the time. you can get a few glimpses of it on the map I'm designing in Sketchup now

Sounds like Blood Gulch style but with a train instead of teleporters.

The train would provide a moving target to shoot. Would the train be destroyable?
Or even better would the track be destroyable?

Hypothetical scenario:
CTF Level designed with a trigger in the base that when pressed destroys the train tracks.
To prevent a premature detonation there would be a barrier that can only be opened by a member of the opposing team to allow them access to the flag. Opening the barrier to the flag also allows access to the trigger.
This would force the offensive team to not only guard the flag carrier but also guard the trigger switch in the enemies base to allow a quicker getaway via the high speed train.
At the train station a clock will be hanging on the platform with the train timed to arrive at preset times (the arrival times could be posted on a bulletin board in the station). Battles waiting for the train to arrive would have that extra tense moment.
If the detonating switch for the track was triggered then the train would do an emergency stop and the track would be rendered useless for the remainder of the game. If the detonation is triggered as the train is passing over the rigged explosives then everyone on board would be killed.

The level should be balanced with two equal sides forcing the teams to decide if detonating the tracks is a worth it because it would also prevent them using the quickest getaway.

i think flying it on your anywhere is better

  • 09.21.2009 12:37 AM PDT

yea theres loads of possibilities, dont get me wrong I love the idea of flying in too im just opening up the discussion a bit.

The detonation idea sounds good aswell since you can pretty much assume that if the attacking team gets the flag onto the train then the chance of stopping him is pretty small so it could balance it out.

You could even have a territories game mode where you have to stay on the train and each team pretty much takes turns at trying to capture the train when it goes back and forth between the bases. Theres probably tonnes of fun little game modes that you could have on a map like this, especially if you could control the train timing in forge

The noobs and idiots would ruin the system...

also I think the pelican would run nicely in MP, if the landing spot is a seperate room in a Cave or something. then the graphics processor dont need to render too mutch.

Sadly you are too right... I can see Caboose now triggering the detonator as the rest of blue team returns on the train with the flag.

I had the impression that you were looking for solutions to transporting players around big maps? The train and pelican are virtually the same, they both transport players stopping and starting along a tracked path. The only difference is that one flies and one goes across the ground. So theres really no point in starting another thread.
