READ THIS **BEFORE** YOU VOTE
Please vote off of the info given on the characters, or just try to read em, instead of automatically saying, "Well, you played as chief in the other games, and he's really cool, and he's the best out of all of him because he survived right?"
1)That's not even right, he didn't survive because he was better, just luckier, not in places other spartans were at hard times. And I'm not saying that that's the ONLY reason, but you have to admit it played a big role
2) Yes I know he was a leader, but you have to admit that it would be fun to play as someone else, just please, for the sake of the poll, please read before you vote.

This is based off of the theory that the game will not just be the battle of reach, but the events prior to it as well, allowing you to play as some of the characters not in the battle itself.

Master Chief- You know him, you love him, the Chief. 'nuff said.

Sam- He was by far the closest thing to a best friend to John-117 and was like a brother to him. Noticeably the largest SPARTAN of them all, he was shot with a large plasma burn on his side by a Jackal armed with a Plasma Pistol on one of his missions when he teamed up with then Squad Leader John and Kelly. This ruptured his vacuum suit and made it impossible for him to escape the detonating Covenant ship. Kelly offered Sam her vacuum suit but he refused. His death took place on November 27, 2525, when he was only 14 years old, as told in Halo: Fall of Reach. The loss of his friendship to John was never fully replaced. He was also close to Petty Officer Second Class Kelly.
Samuel was considered to be the strongest of the first class of SPARTAN-II's. According to John-117, had the best eyes and ears of all of his subordinates [1]. He is also said to be one head taller than John-117 making him one of the larger Spartans, and was the fastest to recover from the augmentation. He had a tan complexion with sandy blond hair and green eyes. Sam did not display the same great leadership qualities as John or Frederic did, but he did act as John's second in command throughout the duration of his Naval career. At times Sam also displayed some ruthlessness, such as detonating a C-12 Shaped Charge on a Rebel base, despite the obvious civilian casualties that would be involved. Also, he would make joking remarks such as saying he was in love with his armor. He was also slightly different than the others, having a bigger sense of humor and was not as much a stoic as the others.

Linda- She is one of the closest friends to John and one of the few known surviving Spartans. She is best known for her skill with the SRS99-S2 Sniper Rifle Systems, and once eliminated two targets so quickly that John couldn't tell who she had targeted first.
Linda is reputable for her remarkable abilities with the Sniper Rifle. John and Fred have noted on several occasions that she makes sniping seem almost like an "Art." She is known even for taking out a Banshee with one shot. She is notably the quietest member of Blue Team, excluding John, and is labeled as a "lone wolf" Spartan. Linda is unshakable and persistent, demonstrating time after time again that her abilities with a Sniper Rifle are far greater than any other Spartan in known combat. She is very pale, with sanguine-red hair and lucid green eyes. She is also a practitioner of Zen. She, like all SPARTAN-IIs, was trained by Chief Mendez on planet Reach. She also took part in the battle for Reach. John describes her as "the strongest" Spartan, as she does not rely on other members of her squad for advocating support on or off the battlefield.

Kelly- She is one of John's closest friends, and is renowned for her incredible speed, even without her MJOLNIR armor. Kelly is notoriously fast, even by Spartan standards. She is the fastest of all the other Spartans, capable of running at bursts of up to 62 KPH (38.502 MPH), has quicker reflexes than all other Spartans and is even capable of accomplishing normal tasks quickly and more precisely than her fellow Spartans. Before a mission, she had to slow herself down considerably to spar with another Spartan. She has demonstrated an incredible tolerance for pain, as she has been injured quite gravely on several occasions and managed to recover fully each time.
When she was younger, Kelly had her hair dyed blue and was taller than John. He eventually outgrew her and her hair color returned to its natural brown color. Kelly has a cynical sense of humor and often cracks jokes over her and her team's situation and mission. Her speed has led her to being termed the team's "Rabbit", acting as quick bait to draw enemies into traps laid by the other Spartans.

Fred- Fred has displayed many similarities, both physical and mental, with the Master Chief. He is an exceptional leader and a quick thinker. John remarked, however, that Fred sometimes takes the responsibility of his command too seriously, empathizing too deeply with any wounded member of his team.[1] He, like many of the other Spartans was an introvert and didn't like to be called by his full name. He never really began to stand out among the Spartans until the death of Samuel-034.
As of 2552, he had fought in more than 120 campaigns. [1] He was the Spartans' second best sniper and best spotter, although Linda-058 outdid him in these categories by far. In fact, John once said that Fred came in 2nd place in all of the contests the Spartans had as children, John thought he could have come out on top but didn't like the attention. He was well known for his abilities with the combat knife. Fred had black hair which was shot with streaks of silver after his augmentation, and he was not too short or tall (Little shorter than John-117) and neither too muscular, nor too slim. In fact it was commented by John-117 that "if any SPARTAN had to blend in to a crowd it was Fred"

Kurt- Kurt was unusually sociable for a Spartan and considered the well being of his team mates more important than that of his commanding officers. Where the rest of his teammates were closely guarded and private, unless around other Spartans, Kurt spent a considerable amount of time making friends. This made some of his fellow Spartans uneasy, as they were not comfortable with a leader who was so easily distracted. Still, Kurt was an extremely proficient leader.[2] After his indoctrination into the SPARTAN-III program, his leadership qualities became even more pronounced.
Kurt had an uncanny ability to "feel" traps, and avoid walking into them. When something was wrong, Kurt would often get a bad feeling. When John-117 and Kurt were on separate teams during training, John often lost as a result of Kurt's feelings. His teammates grew to view this as an asset, trusting Kurt's instincts and common sense.[3]
Kurt was among the best of the SPARTAN-IIs, right next to John-117 in skill and superiority. Kurt, Fred-104 and Fhajad-084 are the only SPARTAN-IIs to make the rank of an Officer, Lieutenant Commander Kurt by "courtesy" of Col. Ackerson.
He died detonating to nuclear warheads to eliminate a Coveneant force that would've caused massive trouble for the rest of his team on the shield world.

Will- Will was resolved to be a very reserved, but an extremely determined individual. John once noted "He never failed to complete his missions." When he was younger, he was the one who always had the jokes and riddles that would keep the spirits of the Spartans high. Over the years however, his lifetime of combat had hardened him, as it had all of the Spartans. Within Will, John thought, something special had been lost. He preferred his shortened name, "Will" over "William", which he thought of as too formal. He seems to have a talent for using the Rocket Launcher. He could shoot down a moving Banshee at long range. He also shows exceptional hand-to-hand combat skills. Before his death, he was able to grapple with and slay a Hunter even though he was completely unarmed. Despite this, the grapple cost him his life, as he was struck at point-blank range by the other Hunter's Assault Cannon. Will is sometimes considered as one of the most courageous Spartans, along with Sam and Kurt.
William-043 was a Spartan-II supersoldier. Because the Spartan-IIs' numbers had been thinned by the war, it seems that he developed a close working relationship with Fredric-104. He was one of the few Spartans to survive the catastrophic Battle of Reach, but he was later killed on Onyx by a Mgalekgolo pair, after valiantly engaging them in hand-to-hand combat.

Grace- Grace was the SPARTAN-II explosives expert, who took part in many operations and was one of the few to survive the Battle of Reach, but died shortly thereafter in Operation: FIRST STRIKE.
Grace was the explosive expert among the Spartans. She could shape a charge to cut into a single steel bolt with only a whisper of sound, or rig a hundred thousand liters of kerosene to blow into a "firestorm from hell". Ironically, her temper was nonexistent. It also seems that she liked calamari, a type of seafood.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Kurt was MIA on Onyx during the battle for Reach....

And Sam was already dead...

Also, John (Master Chief) Never fought on the ground at Reach.

But I want to be the REAL winner of Reach, Thel 'Vadamee, the Supreme Commander of the Covenant Fleet of Particular Justice, and the future Arbiter.

Most likely, you will be Fred though.

A real test of a man is if he is willing to scrape a sharpened razor up and down his junk just to please a woman.

Where's the Sergeant Johnson option?

Correct me if im wrong but Sam is dead before the battle of reach right?

See, this is where our opinions collide.

I don't necisarily think that this game will be JUST the battle of reach.

If the game plays out prior parts to the game, then you could play as him

No, the game has too limited disk space for that many cutscenes, animations, and whatnot. I don't think we will see anything but the actually fall of Reach itself. From a whole new perspective maybe though? One not in the books?

I'm not saying ALL of the prior events, just some important ones, such as Sam's death.

Well...true...but i would like having battles like battlefront..just not in 3rd person you get me?

And yeah it would be cool to show the different "stories or situations"of each spartan.

  • 09.21.2009 7:35 PM PDT

I speak the truth, and truth speaks itself.
The lies disguise what you despise.
Run. Flee and be, what you've always dreamed.
What happens now won't matter later.
What you see will not be, nor what you imagine will not happen.
The end is close, so take your dose.

Kelly.

I'd like the hit-and-run style things I would be able to do, going 38mph.

sooo......

halo 3 ODST : spartan edition?

  • 09.22.2009 4:50 AM PDT

How about we play as master chief, linda, kelly, and fred but in different segments. Like something similar to odst but without making the things flash backs. Mostly chief though.

  • 09.22.2009 4:59 AM PDT

~Z~

@ HLG Cookies

I'm not saying play as them all, so it wont be that similar to ODST in the way that you play as the whole team, but you have to admit, playing as either a spartan that's a head taller and stronger than the rest, or being a super-sniper, or being ablle to run nearly 40mph would be pretty damn cool.

just a question while I'm here, I just did ODST's campaign on heroic, and I got the achievement apparently, but it never did the little alert thing, did this happen to anyone else?

  • 09.26.2009 8:39 PM PDT

now im really wishing I could change the poll so that Grace wasn't there. I'd put either another spartan or "none of the above" is this possible?

  • 09.27.2009 7:53 AM PDT

A different Spartan for different missions and Id like if they added an ODST mission to vary the gameplay within the campaign. Buck was on Reach so imagine you play as him and you have to hold your ground until reinforcements arrive. The end cutscene would be the Spartans busting out of the forest and blowing the -blam!- out of the surviving Covys. Then you play the next level as one of the Spartans. Just an idea.

ehhhhh, i've been kinda against this for while. While Buck was on Reach, not only was he not mentioned in the book, but I'm sure he was nowhere near the real action of Reach in the cave.

If you are currently confused about what I'm talking about or just don't know. feel free to ask.

Corn, Oil, and Wine... We need more wine...

Hmm, I want to play as thel vadam...
