I enjoyed ODST quite a bit, and felt it was worth the money. However, I do have to agree it was kind of a let down.

Before you go flaming let me expand on the reasoning:

I've played Bungie games for a long time. I mean Pathways into Darkness long time.
I've beta tested two of their older games. One thing that's always stood out in Bungie games is their excellent story and depth. ODST had a great story as well, and filled an interesting niche in the Halo story; but it wasn't up to their old standards in my humble opinion.

The story was well told overall, the game play very enjoyable: I loved the differences and relative mortality of playing an ODST versus a Spartan. However, the game does end too quickly, and Firefight is only interesting for so long. Maybe some people are okay with doing the exact same thing repeatedly for hours on end, but it does get a little dull for me. I love Firefight for the challenge and intensity, but I would gladly trade that for even a few extra hours of actual story and campaign gameplay.

Being told that "the game is longer if you play it on a higher difficulty" is a no brainer. Of course it's longer. However extra time through difficulty does not make up for an lackluster initial playtime and story. It's not just Bungie, a lot of games are getting shorter and shorter without adding anything but better graphics and gimmicky features; the VISR for example - which I thought was awesome - but again: I'll deal without it and go through the dark using a plasma pistol overcharged as a flashlight if it meant the game was longer.

Am I wrong here? Is it "whining" to want to enjoy a game longer through sheer length and depth of play rather than being longer because the bad guys don't die as quick? Having both would be even better.

Oh yeah there's the "I took the time to look at everything" and I agree. ODST is a masterpiece and I fully intend to spend another round just exploring, but you know what? A lot of games have had the same, and better, level of detail and extra treats, and have managed to let you see them while working your way through the game, rather than having to abandon doing anything for the sake of walking around (though admittedly that is enjoyable).

Overall I loved the story as it was, thought the game play was brilliant (really: was there any need to use something other than the silenced and scoped SMG and magnum? They were perfect!) On top of that its scale was breathtaking.

I just would have much liked a longer story for the simple (and not unrealistic) enjoyment of having more time to be immersed in the story and game play, without having to resort to difficulty levels that add nothing more than just...difficulty. The game certainly did not suck, and it was certainly worth the money, but for what Bungie has offered up in the past, yeah: I was expecting more, and I don't feel it's unrealistic to expect the best from them.

I actually wish I can spend more time playing this game. I really enjoy the campaign and firefight. It would have been nice though to have firefight set up like the multiplayer online, so you can party up with other players. I don't have a lot of friends who play Halo so I usually play on my own. I think this game was worth every cent!

Should have never bought it in the first place.. Only underage kids like a half- S game like this.. kids who don't mind spending their parents money.. dont bother with "I have a job and I bought this game with my money" posts

Play it on legendary alone than come -blam!- to me about how long the game is.

Oh and ODST> Halo 3 and Halo 2

And dude you and your friends just rushed through the game. If you even played it. (( looks)) You have no achievements, and your a captain grade 4. My bet is if you DID play the game you and your buddies played it on easy. . .

I can beat Halo 3 on easy in 4 hours.

ODST Kicks -blam!- ass.

I personally do not have ODST yet (pre-ordered through amazon, so it's still being shipped), so I really cannot judge the game or the op as of yet.

Here is what I can say however. I decided to buy ODST for the expansion on the lore and to see it from a different perspective. Though you're welcome to call out Bungie for whatever you would like, they were quite vocal on the length of the campaign. Additionally, the price is not set by Bungie, so you really can't complain there. *shrug*

You don't kick a man when they're down, so don't teabag me when I'm dead!

If you guys don't fix the connection problems, I'm taking this game back too. The lag is beyond unbearable; you don't even see four characters. It just holds you in black screen for 5 minutes, then tells you the connection is lost.

Lets Get Mortal !!!

Here in the uk i paid just under £30 for the game which includes the campaign , firefight and all the halo3 maps which i aint got , a bargain if you ask me...

  • 09.24.2009 10:51 AM PDT

in my opinion first ever halo game that wasn't good, ok its a expansion but the price just killed it. Budget title no one would of complained.

Just bought my pre-ordered copy of ODST tonight. Picked it up at 12:22 am and quickly drove it home to play. Already had friends lined up to do 4 player co-op. $60.00 for 3 new multiplayer maps that will be free in another 2 months, and a 5 hour campaign... That doesn't sound good I thought, but then this is Halo and we have all of the previous titles and loved each one. That list includes Halo Wars... Therefore I thought that this one has to be good. Long story short, the 4 of us all agreed that this is a terrible game which is chock full of shortcuts and unpolished hogwash. I plan to take my copy back to the store when it opens for my money back! Bungie - This is not worth $60.00 - not even close. This is a crappy game and that is coming from a Halo-fanboy. You guys lost a customer tonight. I won't buy another one of your titles. I am extremely disappointed by this game.

lol wut

HAlo 3's campaign, even on legendary is only 4 hours. And you never mentioned firefight in there. And you must of played the game on easy becauseon normal it takes 7 hours, try on a different difficulty.EVERYTHING sucks on easy

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

People really need to learn that graphics don't make a great game.

Really... they don't. They don't make the game at all.

If a game has good graphics, that's great. But great graphics can't hide the flaws.

I wouldn't care if ODST looked like Halo 1... it's still a great game.

The only problem I have with ODST is the fact that it really is too damn short! It wasn't really a let down for me. I knew about the length of the game long beforehand (as everyone else should have), so I chose to play through it by myself on Heroic, take it slow, and soak it all in.

It took me about 8 or 9 hours to play through. Which is about the length of the average FPS anyway. So really it was a fulfilling experience.

If I lived in Washington, I'd buy the devs who worked on ODST a round of beers. They deserve it and I hope they make another one in the future. I liked playing as the ODSTs and I think it has potential to become a full on franchise. Not just a Halo 3 knock-off. Abeit, a great one. :p

Think bioshock, wrapped in ghost in the shell, deep fried in rainbow six vegas, sprinkled with children of men, with maybe a hint of the first matrix, drizzled in awesome sauce, and garnished with win.

This is a message to everyone:
QUIT complaining and slamming one another the fact of the matter is that americans are dicks. i know because i am one(american that is im not typically a dick just dont piss me off(hard to do)) what u need to remember is that were are not all cookie cutter versions of one one another we all like and dislike different things so what if you dont like odst go complain somwhere other than the halo odst forums you are going to ruin the game industry

government officials look at you complaining and see it as just another reason to shut the industry down that will mean no more great games, good games, ok games, or even crappy games
shut your mouths and take the game back

be warned that places like walmart do not take opened electronis back you can get a new one but you wont get your money back

last little bit
if you are going to bash me then you have to be atleast 18 years old i dont want to talk to a bunch of immature potty mouths

I think that EVERYONE can agree that ODST does, in fact, have it's flaws.

But,what it really comes down to is to what degree those particular flaws bothered you.

My biggest complaint is the lack of a Match Making feature for Firefight, but it's not a game-breaking flaw.

It's still fun.

if the game was ready months ago why all the bugs? no matchmakeing? what up with the lag? but thats right we are getting the beta for halo reach, didnt odst just come out? what beta do you think we are going to get when reach gets launched? maybe beta's for the next two halo games after reach. bungie needs to make a game without the name halo in the title. or maybe they cant, anyone remember brute force

...and the average Halo game which incidently didn't have the luxury of free form progression and a sprawling inter-mission hub to increase the variabilty between playthroughs and, by that, the replayability.

Generally speaking, now, ODST isn't designed to just give you one Fallout 3 style free-roam to satisfy your lusts for gameplay. It's meant to be played over, and over, and over again hence the non-linearity and the dynamic wave based game mode which help alieviate the pains of familiarity and monotany by giving you a rudimentarily different experience each time you decide to drop in.

Nothing that the original campaign didn't have. Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with it since it's clear that you are just fishing for complaints and need a healthy dose of perspective to assauge your whiny pangs.

What I have noticed is that people who started their Halo experience playing Halo 3 multiplayer, or even in extremely rare cases, Halo 2 multiplayer, do not like this game.

Basically they are just multiplayer fanboys who can't handle different mechanics or feeling like a noob.

I'd confidently say that the majority of those of us who started out with Halo CE back when it first came out appreciate ODST for what it is.

Personally, I bought ODST for ODST. I doubt I'll even use the second disk at all.

Exactly this. This was a great complement to the story we got starting in Halo 2. If you care for the story, you can easily spend up to 7 hours fully exploring this game (provided you don't dplay on Normal). I think the people not enjoying the story are the kinds who only enjoy multiplayer anyway. Short attention spans, ya know.
