Shortcuts are only there if you take them, its your choice, your game, noone is racing you too the finish.
And where is the unpolishedness in ODST?

Visor on the playable character in the campaign that obscures your vision.
Dark (entirely too dark) levels in the campaign.
Short campaign - about 5 hours on Legendary.
The ODST character dies about every 4 seconds when an enemy looks at him funny.
The AI enemy characters are consistently stupid, oftentimes running into walls while driving vehicles.
Night vision on your goggles puts an annoying outline on everything. This I believe is an attempt to hide the fact that Bungie did nothing to improve the graphics in this game over Halo 3. Additionally they didn't do enough work on the design of enemies. Everything either looks too dark, or has an outline with the middle completely dark, or is ultra shiny. The Supervisor guy is hard to navigate while in menus and I found myself stuck more than a couple of times, just trying to get my visor to be clear again. Shall I add more?
Dark - I'm not sure if you noticed this whilst speeding as fast you could through the game just so you could -blam!- about it but when you play as the Rookie, its... wait for it, this may come as a shock to you... NIGHT TIME. The last time I checked, it was dark. Also, you are in a City with not a lot of power left after the Covenant attack, of course it will be dark. Its not like all the street lamps will still be on after a good bombing.
Short Campaign - Its 5 hours MINIMUM if you can't be arsed to take everything in, look for things, explore and generally not doing a speed run.
ODST dying too easy - Again, another shock for you, brace yourself, you may need some ice cream after this, you are NOT Master Chief, you are not a 7ft tall, superhuman killing machine of doom, you are a human being. If you are dying every 4 seconds, I suggest taking Halo ODST back and getting Hannah Montana: The Movie: The Game.
AI: I think you'll find no AI is perfect, in every game the AI will do stupid things. The AI is not as bad as you make out however, because if it was, ODST wouldnt be getting 8.5-9+ review scores across the board.
Night Vision (VISR): It highlights everything so you can quickly judge whats what in the heat of battle, red for enemy, green for good guy but more importantly, its more for points of interest, like the clues that start the day time missions.
Hard to navigate menus - personal preference.
Halo 3 engine- Please, when you have 14 months to make an expansion into a fully fledged game you wont have time to completely redo the engine to improve graphics, I think they have done an amazing job with an aging engine.
All in all, I think you are just looking for a flame thread, its quite pathetic, really.
