Figured I'd post my experience with this issue since it might shed some light on the problem
my original xbox360 didn't have issues running halo 3, but it red ringed itself out of warranty
I wanted to make sure I didn't end up with another 360 that would red ring itself into oblivion
so I made sure I got a hold of the newer SKU aka the "jasper" arcade unit which supposedly didn't
have the over heating problem, but once I got it, and eventually ODST I got the disk read errors
after procrastinating calling the number provided due to being sick of defective xboxs in general
I finally called them, the tech there ran me through the basic trouble shooting issues provided
here "clear cache" "search for corrupt save games" "remove harddrive" etc, didn't work, he finally
said they would send a UPS label I asked what the problem might be and he said something along the lines of this
when ODST came out they were flooded with calls about the DRE, and quickly sent out a patch over xboxlive and he made the statement that for some reason certain xboxs weren't accepting the update.
and that's it... if you have the issue, it sounds like you should call microsoft as it seems to be a hardware bug
last note, one other game can suffer from the DRE, Infinite Undiscovery, I found this out the hard way, and it was the reason I finally called.
in closing, they sent me a replacement Jasper "as far as I can tell" and everything works
perfectly.
