Sometimes your the hammer, sometimes your the nail.

Hope your luck is better than mine. I'm on my third, yes third repair. I haven't been able to play Halo ODST, or Halo 3 since the issue cropped up right after the release of ODST.
The screams you hear will be mine if the issues persist after this repair and I can't play the beta.

I feel your pain. If you still can't play ODST (or H3) after your next "repair" is returned, try writing advocate@microsoft.com. You will get a response and they will address your problem for good - at least that was my experience. I don't advocate everyone using this method unless you've followed all the processes the xbox help line entails, but for those getting nowhere (or in your case, a crazy amount of repairs), this is a good way to get things taken care of. While I had the same Disc Unreadable issue, I had other issues with my xbox repair that were resolved using this method. And I can play ODST and H3 again. Good Luck!

Sometimes your the hammer, sometimes your the nail.

Well, my xbox was returned today. I just plugged the unit in, connected the cables and..... three red rings.

So lets sum this up, four repairs in this order.

Red Rings
Disc Unreadable
Disc Unreadable
Red Rings

Brutal, has anyone else had this many repairs in a row?

So, after not playing ODST (that I got pre-ordered at release) since a few weeks after launch, I decided to fire it up today, just to make sure everything was working, and to watch the preview. Lo' and behold, DRE. Let's start from the beginning, though.

I have an original 20GB 360 from launch day. It has RRoD several times, always repaired by MS.

I put my MP disc into the system, and it booted up to the copyright screen, then DRE. So I tried installing the disc to the HDD. Launching the game from HDD allowed me to get to the Microsoft Game Studios screen, then it promptly DRE.

I then went and cleared the system cache on the HDD, to no avail. I uninstalled the MP disc, and rebooted the 360. Success! I was able to get to the menu, and everything worked fine.

I then put in the Campaign disc. DRE as 'BUN' appeared from behind the clouds. So I went and cleared the system cache again, and rebooted the system. No dice, still DRE at 'BUN'.

The next thing I did was remove my HDD. Campaign disc loaded up just fine, and I was in the menu. But that really isn't very useful, considering I need 1.5GB and my profile in order to play Reach.

So I plugged the HDD back in, which caused the system to reboot. Fire up the game, and once again, DRE at 'BUN'. This tells me that there is something on the HDD causing this problem.

So, I go and delete my ODST save game. Tried to fire up the game, but DRE at 'BUN' again. There was only one thing left on the HDD related to ODST, and that was the Sgt Johnson DLC. Once I deleted that, everything worked fine.

I hope this account helps somebody else. I also hope it helps Bungie & MS to fix the problem.

Great find, I couldn't even get the Reach Beta to launch without the disc read error. I deleted the Sgt. Johnson download and Bam, everything works again!!!

  • 05.03.2010 5:42 PM PDT

Unfortunately, now that I've downloaded the beta, the DRE happens at the same point, when BUN appear from the clouds.

An update:

I have now removed my 360 HDD in order to get into the ODST menu. I have an external drive formatted for the 360. From the menu I can download the beta, and launch it. However, I receive a DRE after seeing the Mature Content warning.

I have come to the conclusion that whatever causes this error is not related to the 360's DVD drive, but rather some fault when reading from a memory device. I came to that conclusion via the fact that the game can be played if I have no DLC for ODST on any memory device, but when any DLC at all is present, I am unable to even get into the menu. Something obviously fails to load off of the memory device.

Considering the fact that I was able to play ODST with the Sgt Johnson DLC at launch, I can only presume that the recent 360 system update fundamentally changed something related to how memory devices are used. I am very disappointed by this, considering the Reach beta was a main selling point of ODST. I will be taking this up with Xbox support, but if they tell me to return my unit for repairs, I might end up asking for a refund for ODST.

I actually did this "install to HardDrive" thing, it did not work at all. I returned it for another game and it didn't work either. It's definitely my 360. Please tell me if I am missing something.

*update* 5*4*10

I have concluded that if this happens it IS your Xbox360 HardDrive. As I played without the harddrivve and it works completely! Except, I cannot get online.

*EDIT AGAIN*'

Solution: Go to Walmart/Staples/anywhere where they sell Jump Drives (USB) and disconnect the HDD and use the USB (format it to the Xbox) and recover your gamertag and BOOM download the beta and play the game!

Mine worked for one game after I deleted the SGT. Johnson download but then had DRE again. I can sometimes get in to a beta game without the error and sometimes not. Even when I get in to a game I will get the DRE in between loading to the next match. I tried the USB thumb drive recommendation and no luck there either, still get the DRE message. This is the only game I am having any problems with. By the time I get it straightened out the beta will be over.

I am getting the same exact thing happening to me. My story is that I was getting a lot of unreadable disc errors, then I installed it to my HDD. That eliminated pretty much all DRE messages except for going back to the matchmaking game selection screen after one successful match in the beta. I got it to go back to the screen only 1 time in approximately 20 times of trying. I may be getting a new Xbox 360 simply to update my old system and in the process, make the game work properly, which seems to be the only way that this will fix it or the game may still be messed up even with the new console. No idea for sure like everyone else so just figured I would add to the message board.

I had a feeling this was going to rear it's ugly head again as more folks purchased ODST to participate in the beta... Playing w/o the HDD attached will work but untimately, you are going to want to send in your xbox for a repair to fix the issue permanently. My two cents - from experience. The demon has been exorcised from my 360.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Agreed.

Anybody else who did this too is welcomed to shared what they were told.

Hmmm... My ODST seems to just crash my XBOX entirely. Seriously, I place the game in and *POW!* three red lights. I'm sitting there like,
"WTF? How did this happen"

So I get my Xbox working again. Try A different game (Works fine) then Halo ODST *POW!* xbox commited suicide again!

The thing that REALLY pisses is me off though is the fact that I bought xbox live back just to play the Halo Reach beta; I also bought points, but then found that the beta can't be downloaded so I decided to get the ODST game -.-

So I basically wasted around £70 just to have my Xbox destroyed by some bloody bug that Bungie happilly gave me for my efforts. So yeah... I'm pretty much EXTREMELY frustrated right now.

I highly doubt this post will get answered since this thread has just been spammed to death. Xbox won't do anything for me since my insurance ran out. So I'm probably just going to give back my ODST game and start the CoD series instead. I've never actually played any of their games and I heard they're good, and I'm not planning to wait around and waste my 3 months for a game that doesn't work.

Anyway, GL with the problem.

Ars longa, vita brevis.

Halo3ODST - Of the two discs, the Campaign disc is no good; Campaign and Solo mode lobbies do not operate right. The Multiplayer disc is fine. The other's background music drops out for a second, allot every 10 seconds and the dialogue of the ODST Spartans at the beginning of Campaign is out of sync. After about 4 minutes, a screen of green schematic drawings appears, takes over and the only way to exit from its interminable, incessant presence is through the XBox dashboard. Is this a defective disc? Most probably, so I suppose I'll ask Wal-Mart for an exchange.

So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

Wow, 103 and counting pages. I never thought ODST would have this big of a disc problem.
