I just tried Halo 3 single player and...I think we have our problem. I can get about halfway through a mission before it gets the unreadable disc error. Something must have happened when the launch of ODST happened and now Halo 3 campaign is just like ODST campaign with the error. I hope this helps them in their fixing

Even the slightest hint from bungie stating that they acknowledge the problem and are working on it would make me feel so much more relief.....

I mean Halo is the only reason I even bought an xbox.

  • 09.24.2009 11:33 AM PDT

Yea I spent like 15 minutes on the phone with xbox to find out that they do not have a clue either :/

But mine does not cut out at the start
it cuts out at the third mission

I sure hope that this whole thing can be resolved before the end of September. The fall and winter months are my main gaming periods.haha.

disc unreadable...un-blam!- believable happened to me twice, i did make a good observation though. When i looked at the disc under a very bright light, i saw that there was some like oil substance all over it, haven't tried a professional CD cleaner yet but thats my next move. The first disc i bought looked like it had a copying error, where as the part on the disc where it was burned from the computer was not a perfect circle, it was all messed up. Exchanged the copy and got a new one, still messes up but it looks a little better. I would advise using a pro CD cleaner then try!

As Achrono said; the New online update(S) will be cause for bugs on a little time, I believe that if you play OFFLINE, there is gonna be no problem, though I would say the game data and hardware where badly burned onto the discs... Bungie I truly think it is sabotage to your new game, they must have done something. I checked the type of discs and data space occupying the disc and is less than Halo3, there should not be any problem with the Game(S).

Ì espect a formal reply....

When/if they fix the problem i would really hope they state what the problem was. I would like to know if my hardware is indeed old and outdated or there was a mistake at their end.

Has anyone been in contact with testninja? He told me he was just gathering information.

From what I can tell it seems to be a weak laser in your disk drive. I have a launch console and recently (before ODST) started having disc reading problems occasionally. I went out and bought a new Elite. Just for fun I threw my copy of ODST in my old console and guess what. It started to play but then popped up the unreadable disc error. I ejected it and closed the tray back up and it worked. I didn't play it so I don't know how long it would have worked for. Every other game I have works on it for the most part. Seems to me that it's possible that they (MS) saved money on printing by using a cheaper media. I have no proof and this is all just theory.

It is not outdated hardware. it has been said that consoles made in 2008 and 2009 have had this issue. I thought it could be old or bad dvd drives.

Possibilities:

-bad dvd drive or bad lasers in drive
-update on console or something put on the console is conflicting and causing games to not work.
-People have reported getting "modded" consoles back from MS, meaning they got a console back and refurbed everything but putting a new dvd drive in, so the console is still modded and the mod may block games from running

I don't think its a problem with the discs. My system can read my disc fine, but my friends cannot read my disc or his own. My console is new red elite with liteon drive, his console has a hitachi drive and is an older model.

In the end I think its not related to the discs or hard drives or memory cards in any way because people have issues with no memory unit or HDD installed. I believe this is 100% hardware related. MS is going to have to shell out some new consoles or free repairs. My friend is contacting someone on craigslist to put a new dvd drive in his console and will see if the problem still persists. I will report back or make a new thread once he gets the drive replaced.

I have a feeling it's Hitachi drives. If they last a year consider yourself lucky.

How can I tell what kind of drive I have?

Just google different hd's for xbox 360. You can tell by the disc tray. I think there is 3 different ones they've used.

There is also a liteon drive which looks like a benq so you cant tell by just opening the drive tray.

There is 4

Samsung & Hitachi were used when xbox 360 first came out for awhile.

To prevent drive hacking MS released the benq which was shortly hacked a few months later.

Then to prevent hacking again(fail), MS released the liteon drive. This drive was also hacked after some time. This drive will come in all new xbox 360s made after spring 2008 and current consoles and if you send yours in for repair you would get a liteon drive to replace whats in there, most time they replace drives. Liteon drive tray looks or is the same as a liteon drive tray.

So what lesson did we learn? Hackers > Microsoft

Hackers +4
MS -4

No new consoles have liteons, they look like benqs, but you can only tell this difference if you open your console up or if your console was made in late 2008 or 2009 anytime you have a liteon drive. Some repaired consoles get replacement liteon drives as well. They started putting in liteons I think around spring 2008.

Well according to the interweb i have either a BenQ or LiteON drive so definitly rules out the old stuff. Then again my Xbox was bought this year, pro model with 60gb Hdd and HDMI. Yet i have a disk read error....wat a bummer.

I don't actually have the game yet, but I have an older 360 that's been refurbished twice. I have a feeling that it won't work on mine so I checked the disc drive.

I have the Samsung TS one so should ODST work for it?

  • 09.24.2009 12:20 PM PDT

According to that site I have a Benq. Not sure if they are good or not, but it is not an Hitachi
