Well I know its a benq, I cracked that Xbox360 open, and it says benq on it. Also cracked open the dvd-drive(benq) and cleaned the lens.

If it's not a hardware issue, then it must be software. Otherwise, wouldn't we be getting some kind of red or orange ring (1,2,3 or 4, I don't know what they stand for. I got the 4 red ring thing when I was trying to get ODST to load. That disappeared for some reason.)?

By the way, I know nothing about what's inside the 360, so I'm just guessing.

You'd only get a RRoD if there was a malfunction, If the drive is incapable of reading the disc format/compression type then it would kick back a 'Disc Unreadable' Error.

Well it may also be the firmware of the DVD drive, along with the board inside it, the UNK model with BenQ (not sure what firmware my drive is) has no issue, I suppose all we can do is round up the MFR dates, and send them to bungie and have them work with MS on what the issue could be.

if it's only a DVD drive (or firmware) issue, why won't mine play from the HDD? does it install corrupted?

BTW, I think we deserve something for our pain. This is a complete cluster-blam!-. An overpriced game, which was supposed to be done months ago, that we can't even play...

Yes the install would be corrupted, if the Drive cannot read it properly, then it wont properly read the disc to install it to the Hard Drive.

Wait! So theoretically you could take your HDD and disc to a friends house (someone without this problem) and install it on your HDD and it would work fine? Someone should try this.

Would work in theory yes... but.. you still need the disc in the console to run the game, a portion of the game is read off the disc (you can hear the sound of the drives lens reading the disc) so I assume you would still encounter a disc unread error (especially if you cant read the game to boot it up) but that may be a temporary fix for those who can start the game and play portions of it. If someone could try that and post results... fantastic!

well yeah =P i knew you still need the disc to start it up. But you only need it to start it up. And most people seem to have trouble with the cutscenes in the campaign and firefight, so starting it up shouldn't be a problem.

Well, darn. So installing it on another xbox and playing it there works fine, but take the HDD back to your xbox and it won't work? grrrr...

Does his xbox have the disc unreadable problem? Because you need to do it on an xbox that doesn't have this problem. And you also need to be able to start the game in the first place. You will not get this problem during the install, but you will get it during the game.

Assuming someone who can semi-play the game (like up to a cutscene before getting the error) could try this, and see if it could work (would have to wipe everything ODST game related to ensure a clean start) we may have found a temporary soulution until Bungie can get a patch or something to fix this.

I also wonder if swapping the DVD drives could cure this (would need to be someone brave enough to void any warranty of the xbox, to see if this would cure it)

That is correct. I thought of that yesterday and I was like GENIUS!!! And then well fail...

Well tomorrow's the WWU, so lets hope they throw us a rope here and not let us drown.

So what's different between his XBOX and yours? MFR, disc drive, anything?

-blam!-.

maybe because it does access the DVD drive at some point (even though it loads from the HDD) - I know it has to verify you own the media...

this is a mess.

darn, but like any good experiment we need more results than just a single piece of data. it could be like other fixes that works for some but not for others.

Nope, not unless they have the same model drive and you are brave enough to swap the chips (motherboard looking thing) of both drives. Popping in any drive that does not have the key recognized by your 360 will not work, even if it is the same model.

His drive was a samy and mine is a benq, his works without a hitch, and I get the message constantly. Mine is 2006 not sure on his.

  • 09.24.2009 9:37 PM PDT

This may be a issue relating to the motherboards on the console itself then, or the firmware of the DVD drive, Im gonna hit up MS Tech support and see what their opinion is, and hopefully they'll have an intelligent response and not something cookie-cutter (doubtful)

Well, lets hope bungie sheds some light on the current situation in tomorrows WU.

Good luck getting through the headaches MS support will give you, if they don't just hang up. They most likely will tell you to do things like "turn your xbox off and on" or "unplug the power cord then reconnect it." thats all most people get from them.

oh and don't believe the "were looking into it" bulls**t they might give you. everybody knows they're just sitting back laughing.

Well, all I know is that I contacted my local Gamestop, where I bought my ODST. I informed this to them, turns out I was the 10th person to contact them since the game came out. The issue is with the air pocket, that's what they told me. It looks like it's wet. I haven't even TRIED playing the other disk...the air pocket is HUGE on that one. My ODST freezes when:
A. I pause more than 2 times while in any mission or firefight.
B. Someone joins or leaves firefight.
C. I get an acheivement and I press middle button to view it.
D. After the cut scene when you first play Dutch or Butch or Whatever his name is.
They told me to come in tomorrow and get another copy. And since I know the manager, he's hooking me up with one of his Sgt. Johnson's....he got like 5 'cus he bought the game for his friends...and didn't give them to him.

Well, if yours is an air bubble then you're lucky. at least you next copy might work. most of us just get screwed.

  • 09.24.2009 9:49 PM PDT

I hate to be the bearer of bad news Rsz Zlayer, but if you are getting the disc read error like we are, then changing the disc will actually have no affect. The problem is not with the disc but rather something wrong with the console/software coding.
