seems like bungie are going to wait until this blows over without offering explination or make a patch just like they did with halo 3. I have a conspiresy, Bungie/microsoft new about this, did nothing, and thought a nice biproduct would be gamers buying new hardware to try to fix the problem for them selfs = Result $$$$$$$$$. BECAUSE THATS ALL THEY REALY CARE ABOUT

its not the HDD, if it was the game would work w/out it. give bungie time, they have yet to fail us.

i doubt it realted to the update this time; however updates have caused issues in the past. remember the NXE dropped and peopel started seeing E74's

on the joystiq article they have a poll on the bottom where you vote if your having disk error or not. so far of 5,000 votes 31% of people have the problem. so imagine 31% of 2 million thats 620,000 people who are in the same boat.

Perhaps we are being a bit to hasty on the matter which is why Bungie feels less inclined to participate in our discussions. Lets be honest, before Halo Gaming was dull they changed the face of the community. We need to give them time, it's not like they can magically pull a patch or update out of there ***.

i hit my xbox with a hammer, stood on it. punched it in the disk tray, jumped on it, kicked it, threw it at a brick wall and kicked it again and it reads my odst and halo 3 disks just fine. i cant imagine what you could have done to make it not work for you

kinda funny though

So, I just bought a new Xbox 360 Arcade Edition a month ago. I used my 120 Elite HDD on it. Yesterday I installed Halo ODST to the HDD and it came up with a read error right after selecting campaign. I tried it several times and it came up with "disc unreadable" even though the game was on the HDD. I then uninstalled the game and ran it off the disc and it worked fine. I don't know...

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

My console is old (2005!) and the game appears to be fine.

It came up "Disk is unreadable" once, so I took the disk out, gave it a quick clean and it worked fine.

I installed the game to my HDD straight away, fyi.

The update can affect how the xbox reads the game, or how the game itself can run (like fixing a glitch) if it was a corrupted, or poorly programmed update, for one series of Xbox boards, then it would cause this issue.

I have to spend 15-20 minutes getting my elite to even recognise there being a disc inside - it's only campaign that's an issue. The mutliplayer disc and every other game I have works fine. Eventually though the xbox will recognise there being a disc inside - after 15-20mins of opening and closing the tray - but then when I try to play it it goes to a black screen and then 20 seconds later states the disc is unreadable. I've returned the discs to the store, got replacements and experienced the exact same issue again. In nearly two hours of opening and closing the tray I've only got it to load to the point I could play it once. I'm gonna try another set of discs from another store once more and if that presents the same issue again - I'm going to get a refund and go back to playing COD4 until MW2 is out.

Hopefully bungie/microsoft fix this soon. Why can't they catch these things BEFORE the game comes out? It sucks to fall in the thirty percent (or however many people are having this problem) out of the seventy. I guess ill buy a MU later, some people have been saying that works, as i mentioned earlier my HDD seems to be the cause.

Well I have tried everything. My Halo 3 started doing this in August and I thought nothing of it cause it was scratched along the curve of the disc on the outer edge so I traded it in and put it on ODST. This I cant even get into the 1st mission. Also firefight wont work. The multiplayer disc some maps work but not all. ODST works on my friends Xbox with my HDD on it while I am signed into Xbox LIVE, so I installed it on his Xbox and put it on my Xbox and no go. I can not even get into the 1st mission. I have watched that awesome 1st cutscene 50 times!!!

trust me I know what your going through, my halo 3 seems useless to me now, idk wtf is going on, if an update doesn't come out within the week, I'm just gonna return it and buy another game instead.

  • 09.25.2009 8:37 AM PDT

I believe that the problem is not the xbox but the hard drive.

Last night I moved my gamerprofile and my ODST save data over to a memory unit I have, and then removed my hard drive.

The game ran better with out the hard drive and I had no disk errors when I played through the entire campaign I was amazed.

Fire Fight ran perfectly as well, but once i transfered my save data and profile back over to the hard drive i began getting the disk errors again.

Firmware and software updates can cause problems with anything. Keep in mind that if the hardware isn't getting correct instructions from software, the whole thing won't work.

On the more broad spectrum of this topic, I cannot believe that Bungie let something like this slip through their fingers. I hope the reason they haven't aknowledged it yet is that they're frantically trying to figure out what's wrong before they have a riot at their studio =P.

Best of luck to all who cannot currently play ODST. Trust me, your patience will pay off. It's an amazing game.

Gotland Rulez!!!!

(Sigh) I cant believe i cant play a game from start to finish, It is actually kinda funny i mean this has to be the first console game ever to have a situation that make it impossible to actually finish the game... I may be wrong though lol
