No multiplayer is having problems too. Not for everyone but to a nice amount as well. Also when I went to my GameStop and got a new copy the guy instantly said to me it is not the disc and he couldnt do anything. He was referring to the multiplayer disc.
Hmmm, this is interesting. So sometime in the last couple of days Gamestop was told to not take the games back because it's not the disc?? Earlier in the week they were replacing discs with no problem. I wonder if they know something we dont??

I know that any self-respecting Halo gamer (no offense offline people, you'll see what I mean) would always be online and will thus always get the latest update from XBL.

However, if anyone out there has a 360 that wasn't updated and is able to play ODST, I'd love to hear about it. This is because one of the theories as to why certain 360s won't play the game is because of a recent update (not sure which).

These are a few theories from the thread:
1)A recent update caused something to make certain games unreadable (this includes certain cases where even demos get the error).
2)Bad batch of discs (unlikely, as several people used multiple copies of the disc to find that they still have the DRE, although they could be all bad. We'll have to wait and see).
3)Bad HDD (playing without one helped very few people, I personally still have the error regardless).
4)Bad disc drives (also unlikely, as almost all other games seem to work, straight from the disc or installed to HDD. And earlier in this thread, this error popped up regardless of the model or producer of the disc drive like BenQ, Toshiba, or that other name I can't recall. Again, this is a wait and see situation).

and probably a few others that I forgot over the course of this thread.

Yeah you seem to have nailed all the theories. My personal bet is the update that is causing all this stuff. My multiplayer disc is still running smoothly and campaign disc is still...Well, you know. It is interesting that the employee at Gamestop is now well aware of the problem, as when I went to Best Buy for my third disc replacement, I asked them to test it on their 360. Before they even tried, the girl said that specific game doesn't work on their console. No idea how old it was though

i agree with you i think its got to be the update
god i would hate it to be a HDD issue and that we would all have to get new ones

Ok, so i tried taking out the HDD, it didn't work.
Then i tried taking the HDD and Ethernet cable. Low and behold, the game runs perfectly until the level after Dutch, where my game then freezes. However, i did not get a DRE.

NO IT IS NOT THE UPDATE. I had the problem the night before the update came out. it is not the update.

he unreadable disk problem is so ridiculous. Many people are suffering from this unusual problem. I purchased the game and found myself not being able to complete missions. here is my solution, the solution that helped me beat the campaign.

You start a new solo game on whatever difficulty. Play through the missions, but save and quit as you go along. For me, the unreadable disk message would be a matter of how long i was playing the game. SO, I would play the missions, but before I would reach a cut scene, I would save and quit, then I would go back and play. If the message came up, I would go back to the dash and play from my last checkpoint. The message would not come up for a while. So I repeated this process and eventually beat the campaign. ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS SAVE AND QUIT, GO BACK AND PLAY UNTIL THE MESSAGE COMES UP. GO TO YOUR DASH AND REPLAY FROM THE LAST CHECKPOINT. IT WILL WORK. Unfortunately My xbox just broke, so i wont be playing anymore. but this worked for me. Hopefully it works for all of you.

Yes the update theory makes the most sense to me at this point. There has been other issues ive been hearing about since the update.-messages and invites coming up slow or not at all, and freezing.

  • 09.26.2009 1:47 PM PDT

Yea it was on Thursday when I went, but at that time I thought it was only campaign and told him it was my campaign one and he gave me a new copy, but he said a lot of people came saying their multiplayer discs don't work.

When I had Halo 3 my multiplayer started to give me the message a lot, around sometime in August, but I thought it was the disk. But those same maps don't work on this new Mythic MP disk so I think they are related in some way but it became more widespread when ODST came out.

  • 09.26.2009 1:48 PM PDT

Really? I have also had messages and invites come up late or slow. I thought it was lag.

I said a recent update, not THE most recent. That means any update within the last 3-6 months.

Also, I already know that the latest update wasn't the culprit, as I too got the error before the update as well. (****ing myspace ****, facebook, whatever the hell it was).

Alright kid we know what you think...And by the way, it could be bad firmware from a previous update or something. So if your so sure about what it is or not, please enlighten us.

  • 09.26.2009 1:54 PM PDT

Yeah it wasn't the most recent update, but I think that a string of updates somehow overlapped one another causing some sort of coding error because honestly, what else could cause a DEMO to say "Disc Read Error?" However, my copy of Halo 3 wasn't acting up until before ODST, as I beat the game with my friend to get him the achievements

That could be it, but are there any patch notes, anything that mention what specifically changed with that?

Me too, it's kinda interesting to see what made this error appear in the first place, although I wish it never existed at all.

Edit: Ok, trying again, i put in my HDD and left the Ethernet cable and it runs fine until pulling Dare's helmet out of the TV
